Is there a way to mine with the CPU on a Mac? I have some friends who use iMacs who would like to mine

Certainly you can compile and use Wolf or lucasjones cpuminer. I'm not sure about yam or claymore precompiled versions.

Yam also has builds for Mac: https://mega.co.nz/#F!h0tkXSxZ!f62uoUXogkxQmP2xO8Ib-g

Awesome, thanks to the both of you.

jwinterm, I messaged you on IRC, I don't know how to compile anything (lol), especially for Mac. Any tips would be welcomed, but I can probably just google it and not be a lazy bastard.

I will also check out the Yam builds for Mac, so thanks again. Grin

I haven't mined in over a year, and my 2 Radeon 7950's have just been collecting dust. I'm kind of interested in this though. What kind of kh/s are you guys getting with similar radeons, or how many coins a day? Is it worth it?

7950s get pretty good hashrate I think. THere was a google doc that had some numbers. The wattage of those things is a beast. At current XMR prices, u might be at profit though.

You'd probably be able to get ~1 xmr a day at the current network hashrate.

Here's the doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MI-ic0Os25hgGUImW54sUIjZY_pUNQNa_W8Se5pRGBs/edit#gid=1726706747
According to that you could be getting between 257 and 388 H/s on each card, depending on your configuration.

Feel free to point them to https://monerohash.com  Grin

FYI:

Monero mining pool monero.crypto-pool.fr has begun making payouts with a mixin of 3.

Well, since I did write:

As a side note, I just bought a GTX970 and I can hardly wait for it to arrive so I can mine (& game) with it.

I thought it would be clear to a reader that I will use it for both mining and gaming.

I cannot comment on dwarfpool, as I have never mined there.

But, I have mined at monero.crypto-pool.fr for many months. Good pool with good devs.

Is that 970 for mining only? Will that be profitable for you?

Please recommend me which of the two pools is more productive and reliable? Teeter between http://monero.crypto-pool.fr and http://dwarfpool.com
Thanks for your cooperation!

You should join a pool with low hashrate though. We need to spread the hash around. I mine at monerohash.com, which is US east coast based. You should check the latency of the pool you're going to hash at, and mine at the one with the lowest latency.

Still wild and free

I updated the pool list in the OP to match that of the main thread. It is now sorted by mixin count, then by donations to the development fund.

Even though I usually update this thread's OP regularly (I may lag by a few days), if you want more certainty about up-to-date information, check it directly here.  And if you want absolute certainty, check the info by yourself!

It will be cool to see this beast come to life. You must update with pics once it is done. A dedicated thread is probably justified.

Free electricity is nice. The air conditioning is going to get a workout as well, trying to keep the room cool with this monster churning out some substantial BTU's.

LOL I've told her to buy the coins, especially a month ago or so when they were down to like .24 ¢ US.  I think she will start to buy the coins now that I had a man to man ... I mean man to woman talk with her.   Not going to try to even burn the cards out by overclocking.  Most of my experience with that is higher power draw for little gain.  I guess in this case it doesn't matter about power draw, but still don't want to burn the cards out, would like them to run around 65-70C at the highest if possible.  If and when this beast gets built its going to have to have at least 2x Thermaltake 1200 watt gold certified PSU's

Her biggest asset is that she has an office leased and part of that lease is free electricity!  So pure profit once ROI is met.

I wanted to use the ASRock H81 Pro BTC motherboard as I have experience with this board.  It has been solid and reliable for me and i know how to get it set up quick.  It only comes in an Intel supported CPU version though.

I have used my AMD FX8160 CPU on my gaming machine and at 75% load I get about 300 -350 H/s with that CPU. Its an older AMD 8 core CPU.  I'm sure that could be tweaked but its my main surfing and gaming machine and I don't want to burn it up.  I keep it liquid cooled so to make it last.  I've had that CPU for three years now and it's been solid especially after the first major AMD catalyst updates for that chip.

Thanks for the feedback any and all is good IMO.  I like having different thought from everyone.  Helps me see all angles.

re: CPU, I'd try messing around with the AMD's due to their GPU within CPU design - i have no idea how efficient they are etc, but in theory, those things have lotsa cores. As smooth said though, the main thing is the cache size - no idea what the AMD GPU/CPU chips have in terms of that.

Last year some of the AMD CPUs were indeed outperforming Intel, but I have no idea what is going on in that market now.

Any suggestions on the CPU would be great (the more cores the better here kinda thinking)

For mining XMR cache size matters more than cores. The most efficient number of threads is the cache size divided by 2 MB. Since this will likely leave cores idle on many CPUs you won't have to worry about extreme cooling issues or not having enough CPU to drive the GPUs.
