Unfortunately that's nonsense. There is no such thing as a "standard extranonce size". That is determined by the stratum server sending the data to the miner which should abide by the stratum protocol. The limitation is at their end that they only support one size.

 use 3334 not 3333.

  to be more clear

use  stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3334   not  stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333

  IIRC
No, it makes no difference. All ports point to the same pool instance now. The different length nonces were for AM tubes previously but now the pool is compatible with them. No idea what rented hashers need... but it might work if you set up a ckproxy that points to the solo pool and point the rented hashes at the ckproxy. Too many layers of expectation from the rental service...

I was trying to throw some hash toward ckpool using westhash, but when i run the pool verificator it gives me a (Error: Extranonce1 size and extranonce2 size greater than 8.) Is there any way to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Since this is a pool for solo miners, I would assume that you would have better luck here then if you truly solo mined. Is this true? My thought was because the work is split between all the workers instead of all of use doing the same work.

No.  The only benefit of this pool is that it is well connected to other nodes and you can check your hashrate online.

How can I check my hashrate online?

EDIT: just found out how to do it.

Your luck is the same on a solo pool or on your solo bitcoind.

Nobody is doing the same work either way.

Solo pools usually have better connections to good super nodes so that your block, if you find one, has a better chance of being broadcasted on the network first.  When you solomine it is more likely your block will loose an orphan race.

I got Satoshi's avatar!
Just curious.. Reading about the chance of finding the solving hash of a block and understanding - I hope - how random that is, what would be the use?
I don't think there is any real use other than a little more information to know what is possible with your hardware. It would be nice to have some persistent information as it is lost on each miner reboot.

i guess there is one feature everyone would want:
your "best share" added to stats to see how close you have been finding a block
Yes Please! That would greatly help those of us whose miners do not report the best share Smiley

or those that rent miners and have no way of knowing how close they came.

Today I updated the miners I have at home, which saw 11 S3s consigned to a cold state.

Made me think ... stick a plug back on one and put it on here.

440ghs isn't a lot, but a lottery this is, as they say 'you've got to be in it to win it'.

but I don't exactly see it that way because each mining node is competing against all the others.

There is no competition.  Every hash found has an equal chance of matching or exceeding current difficulty, which is around 39.5 Billion.

If there's no competition, then why am I not solving ALL of the blocks?

Because you don't have 286541.40 Ths of hashing power.

Call it what you want, but that is competition.  That's the exact reason there are pools and hardware races for new technology.  If your not solving a block, someone else is.

If you want to think of mining as a competition then fine have it your way.  But your descriptions that I've seen so far are not correct.  Also you are not being harmed or losing anything by the initial 1024 difficulty before it adjusts down.

I wish you luck in your competition.
Take Care,
Sam
The only competition in mining is an orphan race.
Otherwise it doesn't matter when anyone finds a block coz you simply switch your work item to a new one and continue searching.
This switch also happens every 30 seconds and every time anyone on the planet finds a block.
Every block found is "randomly unaffected" by every other block found, other than a work switch.
So for example, if someone finds a block here, the next person who finds a block here could find it 1 second later, or 100 days later - they are "randomly independent" of each other.
There is no competition, there is no spoon Smiley

Warning: Gross simplification ahead

If you need to keep your competition metaphor ... imagine you are in a 2 week long race to find one of 2016 blocks before the difficulty changes;  Everyone who solves a block in that time period wins.  So,  Kano is absolutely right in the sense that finding one of these 2016 blocks is independent of what else has been found.  The first 2016 finishers all win.

And in about 2 weeks, the race ends and a new 2016 block race starts, which might be a little harder or easier than the last.

This all happens transparent to the miner who is happily working on a new math problem provided by the server every so often

So tempted to spend 2btc on 5-6hrs mining @ 700Th

would use same money to longer mining time slower hash

I would hold onto the 2 BTC.

The approximate odds of finding a block in 5 hours would calculate to:

~320,000 Th/s bitcoin network
700 Th/s your hashrate
30 blocks (1 block per 10 min, 30 blocks in 5 hrs)

320,000 / 700: 1 in ~457 per block

457 / 30: 1 in ~15 for 5 hours timeframe.

Do you feel lucky?  Can you afford to lose those coins?

I know it's a risk, 1 in 15 is good odds.
I've spent more on horses and casino. It would be a kind of 1 off thing

Same here.  Right now, 2 btc is a day in Vegas  Grin

Ah but a block is a weekend, show and hooker..
