If you want the math to seem easier try my pool calc page - that's been around for a very long time Smiley
Just enter your hash rate as the pool and as your miner to see the details from both points of view - as it is here
(note that the pool is TH/s but the miner is GH/s)

thanks for the link

Can I mine with a Block Erupter?  I mean it, seriously. Can one BE gets me 'in the door' like a dollar lottery ticket?
The odds..I know. But would it work?

yes here i am with a few ice fury sticks  and a u1 stick

the math is really difficult 1 out of 180,000 for a day.  but these cost me very little to mine about 5 cents a day.

so for 5 cents a day why not

aha!
i trump you with a bfl single @55GH/s and a 333MH/s usb stick

in the example:

eg: cgminer -o stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333 -u 1PKN98VN2z5gwSGZvGKS2bj8aADZBkyhkZ.0 -p x

There is a .0 at the end of the address.  What is this for?  I am assuming I should just use my address for the username without a .0

Yes, the .0, .1,... are for separate workers for the same bitcoin address/user.
And only if you want to use different workers so you can monitor each miner seperately. I personally don't use it.

In keeping with maintaining as much anonymity as the miner may desire, I won't say how much his or her hashrate was (no I don't know who they are).

According to http://solo.ckpool.org/users/174yX8zgevuCtcGjKnhEVEHXVEYPDJEC3C, it's currently ~35.5T with 54 workers.

Wink I knew someone would figure the obvious way to get that much out of it. I can make some assumptions based on when people join the pool on this forum thread and how much hashrate appears on the pool who they are but generally speaking I don't know whose hashrate is whose.

I would assume that you are a trusted person on the forum though.  Creator of cgminer, linux contributor, and you have your own wiki page...
