I might just be being stupid here, but then why on the same post did The Pharmacist have the error and no one else did? Surely if the post is missing some info, it is missing the info for everybody?

Permissions and ignored-boards can also cause info to be missing per-user. In this case I think that it happened because The Pharmacist is ignoring the board in which that post resides.

The ignored-boards page says, "Be advised that by ignoring a board it will be completely inaccessible to you." How it works is that almost all forum systems view you as being not allowed to see the board, just like hidden boards. This is also why you can't quote a post in an ignored board.

i thought that  Roll Eyes was enough to show you that it is a joke.
My mind has a tendency to just subconsciously filter out emoticons, and they're too small to even read on bitcointalk anyway.

I guess this will forever remain a mystery, but not a biggie.  Thanks again to everyone here who tried to help, and I'll thank you on behalf of AfricanHunter for all the merit he received (lol), which is appropriately more than most currently-active signature campaign spammers have, or will ever, earn.

Going to lock the thread since even Theymos himself responded.

Also:  I did restart my browser, but I'm still getting that same message.

That error happens when some info about the post is missing/undefined. For example, you get that when you try to merit a post by a guest, since those posts don't have a defined user.

Just managed to merit it after vlom, so it seems if there were something missing or it was an error, maybe it has been fixed now.

I don't think it has anything to do with browser, hacks or deprived sleep Cheesy
but it has something to do with maximum number of merit you have spent, isn't there a limit cap of 50 per month?
If I counted right, on your merit page, you've sent out 50 merits since april 1st
this could be the only possible reason. And the error message was just an unspecified standard warning

The Pharmacist merited bill gator in this thread, so it can't possibly be that I'm afraid. The limit is that you can only give 50 merit to each user in a 30 day window - you are free to give away 100s of merit in a single day if you so choose, as long as it is spread across multiple users.

I'm going to just close my browser and reboot and see if that helps anything.  Thanks for your attempts to help, though.  I do appreciate it.  I know it's silly to give that post merit, but I liked what he said in it, and that thread was pretty interesting in general.  There really is some good reading in bitcointalk circa 2010-2011 when the price was low and members were literate.
I'm going to close the browser and go to sleep.  Been up 26 hours and I'm hearing music in my head that I know isn't really coming out of any speaker.  My eyes are drooping and I keep forgetting to feed the cat.  Nighty-night all and again, thanks for trying to help.

What makes you think I got hacked.

Isn't it obvious?

anal beads

The eyeroll was meant to indicate that they were joking, c'mon pharma-boy! Sir, bitcoin is great for earn many. Strong passwords are consist of special character and hard-phrase. Keep it safe to avoid hackers.

I think you got hakee, because when merit is disabled as security precaution it mean you compromised.

Been up 26 hours and I'm hearing music in my head that I know isn't really coming out of any speaker.

Could it be possible that you are seeing merit messages that aren't really coming out of any webpage?

i think you have been hacked  Roll Eyes
Yes you are right, we can get hacked if we are not carful with our passwords, they must be strong and have too many characters for hackers to hack us, and passwords must be kept away from anyone who hack us, but no one can hack our bitcoin if we kept it safe and never give our key to public.  Bitcoin is safe and help my family with everyday needs such as pork, anal beads, gas, food, and it has a bright future if we join up to bitcoin and keep it safe from hack.  I used to doubt about hack but my friend showed me his wallet and now I'm earning bitcoin all the time.

What makes you think I got hacked.

Have you got problems meriting anything else?
I haven't given any merit, but when I hit the button for a couple other posts to test it, the screen with the box showed up as usual, and I didn't get that message.

I'm going to close the browser and go to sleep.  Been up 26 hours and I'm hearing music in my head that I know isn't really coming out of any speaker.  My eyes are drooping and I keep forgetting to feed the cat.  Nighty-night all and again, thanks for trying to help.

Have you tried the simplest solution, The Pharmacist? 99% of computer problems are fixed through a reboot. I'm wondering if you have tried relogging, clearing your cache or any of that basic nonsense? I know, I know, it is redundant and almost offensive for me to be asking these things. Sometimes though, we over complicate an issue, I've done it a million times.

or quote it.
I mentioned twice in this thread that I can't quote it.

Post #12.  The one where African Hunter basically tells JohnnieWalker off and suggests that he not publicly rant about a customer, as that's poor business practice.  He's so right about that.

see me edit above. i was able to quote it. and send 1 merit.  Kiss

which one do you want to merit? i am asking because i will test to sent a merit myself.
or quote it.

I am also curious, because I have some extra merit and I wouldn't mind using 1 or two in an attempt to track down the issue. I have never received that message before and I've been under the impression there is no such thing as a post that cannot be merited.

I opened every post's +Merit page within the thread linked above, and none of them look out of the ordinary. My only explanation would be that either the posts are doing something silly in the database where they appear as a deleted value or there is a Merit blacklist similar to the old "Scammer" tag.

This is the post in question :

By the way, who assays (an assay costs about $60) about 4oz of silver? And you have no documentation from this place?.

I actually had about $2500 worth of metal assayed. If you act professionally, are wearing a suit and carrying a few grand in bullion nearly any reputable shop will assay for free if they think they may be able to buy it. If you role in wearing shorts and a t shirt with 4oz's of shady silver they will either tell you to get lost or charge you. The fee is to keep schmucks out of their place of business asking to get a piece of costume jewelry tested.

YOU GOT MORE SILVER THAN YOU PAID FOR W/ME INCLUDING THE BARBER HAL.

This isn't a true statement as we made a deal at X.X btc for a certain amount of silver. Coming back now and saying, "yeah well based on spot you got the silver you paid for" is a false argument because our deal (and your ad incidentally) was for under spot; I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. If we were talking a percent or three That's one thing, but up to 12% low is quite another; especially based on your promise that only Sterling and .999 shot went into the crucible.

Your attitude is losing you more business than you could possibly imagine. You are a youngster and seem to be new to business in general so here is a free tip. The way you treat your customers when there are issues is directly related to how successful you will be. An ethical businessman would be in contact with your other buyers to alert them to the fact that some assayed samples have shown low and offering to make it right

Instead you create this thread to try and both discredit me and shame me into being quiet about it lest I get perceived as a scammer trying to extort you. Sorry but that crap doesn't fly in my world.

Even with your piss poor attitude, if you want to take a moment of self reflection to realize what's going on here would be willing to discuss a resolution. A little maturity will take you far in these situations.

Otherwise how about this, 25 btc escrowed bet on the table that the four bars will not average over .925 (overall, so if 2oz is .95 and 2oz is .85 then overall avg would be .9 and I would win) when assayed by a 3rd party. If you are so sure I am a scammer, that's easy money. You could buy that bitmit scrap you want plus a bunch of silver shot. I am sure we can find a reputable third party to pick a location locally.

Will leave it to the community/mods to determine if this deserves a scammer tag or not.

Also would be happy to post all our pm's with your consent for people to judge for themselves

Regards.

Ps- I have never insinuated, said or implied I would show up at your doorstep nor have I threatened you in any way so please stop with the inflammatory chatter. I don't even have your address anymore beyond the city you live.

I can merit it, quote it and do everything else I wish with it, no problem.

On that old thread from 2012, I can certainly click +Merit and get the normal page - is this where you got the error message, or was it after typing in the amount of merit to give and hitting the "send" button?
No, I hit the merit button, and I get the usual  "You have received a total of 1238 merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have 2 sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future."

and then underneath it is a line, and underneath that is "You cannot merit that post" and the bolding and font are exactly as I just wrote it.  I can't quote the post either, for the reason I gave above.  It's bizarre.
