You should go for safer version of investment. Don't put all of your money in one coin. You should buy some Eth or Bitcoin to cover your eventual losses and rest of the money in altcoins that you think is best for you.

Well the best coin to invest for long term with that amount would be ethereum. Why? because ethereum has a low risk of dropping because there are too many already erc20 token out there which are based in ethereum so the demand for ether is still high.

In my personal opinian, bitcoin is safe and then ethereum is also a good coin. But when it comes to trading, it is almost impossible to say that the coin is safe. Ups and downs are normal in crypto.

I do think litecoin might be good for investing long term. I do recommend you to invest on blockchain program such as eth and eos. Why blockchain program? Cause seems like the only thing that goverment support from cryptocurrency is the decentralized of blockchain project. So i do think it would be best to invest on project that offer smart contract. Eos and eth were the best in blockchain program from now. There is a lot other coins too such as waves, ubt, nem, neo and many others
Safe? Nope, no coin is 100% safe and risk free, any coin you invest in there will be at least 1% chance that you will lose almost all your money. It's very unlikely to lose all of your money if you take action in right time and cut your losses, but you don't want to cut losses but make profit right? Best I would suggest is to invest in any one of the popular coins, BTC ETH LTC etc, maybe split evenly in all three are put all money in one depends on you. As soon as the value increase significantly you sell enough coins to get back your initial investment of $12k, then whatever remains of your coins you can hold them for lifetime without worries.

I think that the right option will be to split the deposit into several projects. Bitcoin is best known for long term investment due to the continuous increase on its market value for a long run.
