12000$ is quite a lump. To be on the safe side it's better to diversify your portfolio. I would invest 50% in Bitcoin and make it a long term HODL for a couple of years. Other 25% I would transfer for purchasing promising coins like Fusion (FSN) or Tezos (XTZ).. There is no safe state in cryptocurrency investment, safe means when you invest on some crypto and you know that you will lose all the value go to zero and that is good for you, and you got no problem at all, that is what we call safe. so i think you should really researching what coin, ico and project will you choose to invest, and don't forget to diversify.

There's no guarantee within the cryptoworld. But I recommend spreading your portfolio to at least 4 coins.

NEO will be best thing. its supply is so lower than etherium. If you are serious about investing for long term, I will advice that you safe yourself of all the stress of new project and go right ahead investing in bitcoin and ethereum. Hold them for at least minimum of four years. You should be in good profit by then.
