In my opinion you should be very aware of the trends and market cap don't go with the top coins list because it's not worth it without deep research.These lists are mostly generated by non experience traders yet it can serve you as a tool to do thorough research of market buy don't rely On it completely.
Coins like Sol, ETH ,BNB, Doge etc are good choices but it all depends on whether you want quick profits or a long time investment, invest accordingly.

$20,000 to invest in any Altcoins of your choice?
If I have $20,000 and prepare to invest that $20,000 then of course I will prepare to buy Ethereum, BNB, Solana and XRP coins because these three coins that I have invested will increase a lot when the bull run starts in Bitcoin market. As we are currently pumping the market we can see these three coins that I have selected go up a lot. But I am not sitting still I am investing in these three coins. I hope to have better success next bull season.
Doge can give big profits if we're lucky since meme coin really have bigger risks other than normal altcoins such ETH, BNB, SOL etc. rather than trying with our luck it's better to invest in something clear in terms of utility, community, team member, and roadmap. We're going to have altcoin season so it's better to choose top altcoins rather than still gambling with meme coin. Don't forget to make investments based on your research because lots of influencers will ask you to invest under them or follow their movement.
I don't know how safe it is to invest in meme coins like Doge coin. But I made good amount of money from Doge long ago. Now I am not interested in investing in meme coins. It is very difficult to make money by investing in them. So I prefer to invest in bitcoins and altcoins. I know that if you keep investing in them, the chances of getting profit are very high.

$20k is a good amount to invest. If I had this amount of money I would definitely invest $15k in Bitcoin and hold. The remaining $5k I will invest in either Ethereum, BNB. If there is such amount I don't want to miss the opportunity because Bitcoin halving will happen after few days. Expecting Bitcoin and top alt coins to pump after few months of halving. I expect the price of Bitcoin and top level alt coins to reach their ATH in the upcoming bull run and I expect huge profits from here in the future.

If I had $20,000 to invest, I would invest 50% in Bitcoin and the other 50% in Ethereum. I will never invest my $20,000 on 1 token because $20,000 is not a small amount, it's a huge amount. The only reason to invest in splits is if bitcoin reaches $100,000, then I will get a lot of success from there. And if Bitcoin reaches 100,000 dollars, surely Ethereum will reach 10,000 dollars, then I will get more success than Ethereum.

maybe you have to do your own research first, you can open coingecko or coinmarketcap so you have a reference on which altcoins are worth it, but I would recommend you buy eth or solana, research these two coins, why do I recommend eth and solana, because these altcoins are in my portfolio, but Do your own research so you don't experience losses in investment

Op thinking of use such a huge sum of money to invest in altcoin is an unthinkable risk, most especially in times like this were we have so many scam projects that looks promising but at the end it'll crash to price zero. If you're asking for financial advice I'll suggest just one percent of $20,000 which will be $200 should be used for altcoin investment while the remaining $19,800 should be used to buy bitcoin, even if it's not up to one bitcoin, it's a very good start in your accumulation journey. Beside the bull run is just by the corner and would be visiting us soon, so now is the best time to make a very good looking bitcoin portfolio, so you'll be expecting a much greater profit. This upcoming bull run might lead bitcoin to the new ATH, and just imagine you having up to 70% or 80% profit.
Smaller marketcap doesn't guarantee any big income, it could help you or it could hurt you and we wouldn't know which one will happen first. This is not the time to follow the hype, fomo… I think this is the time to appreciate the opportunity to hold on (or buy 20k) for ETH, BNB, SOL. Bitcoin's vibrant trend will encourage a sustainable growth market for altcoins. My suggestion is ETH, the reason is because I only buy altcoins, only ETH, nothing else, my portfolio is divided into 2, 60% BTC and 40% ETH, why I only buy those two is because BTC is the king of crypto and ETH is the king of altcoins, it's as simple as that if you want short reason but if you want another altxoin you can check at coingecko altcoin altoin what's the hype now
