The organisation planning the first manned mission to Mars has asked for the Fatwa issued against living there to be lifted, calling for clerics to remember Islam’s rich tradition of exploration and allow Muslims ‘to witness God’s creation in heaven’.

Mars One is planning on setting up the first human colony on Mars in 2025, but the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment (GAIAE) in the UAE declared recently that a trip there would be un-Islamic.

The committee argued that an attempt to dwell on the planet would be so hazardous as to be suicidal and killing oneself is not permitted by Islam.

According to Khaleejtimes.com it said: ‘Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam. There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.’

However, Mars One pointed out that the Quran encourages exploration.

In a written response to the Fatwa it highlighted a verse that says ‘and among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors: verily in that are Signs for those who know (Quran 30: 22)’.

There are a lot of reasons why it should not be done but there are a few strong ones for it. Those would be:

1. An insurance for humans as a specie (a lot of things can go wrong down here from a deadly virus to a killer asteroid and on a long run the question is just when that/those will happen).

2. An opportunity to start all over again making more ethical systems for us (bitcoin like currency included).

3. Connected to point 2 - more people will have the chance of feeling self-accomplished even if the beginning will be very harsh.

4. An opportunity for us to hear and see some different breaking news (hopefully good) than what we see now daily.

5. An excellent opportunity to prove that can be done with very limited resources.

6. To stimulate the drive to go forward, achieve "the impossible".

7. To make a desert like world flourish (even if there are some serious obstacles terraforming is possible).

We set technological goals for mankind that seem impossible and yet we always prevail. Then it becomes the new normal quickly, then we become blasé all over again, then we set new impossible goals...

Colonization of new worlds is our future, but I don't envy first people to be guinea pigs. I have seen to many movies about mars colonies that end terribly wrong.

On Mars there's a problem that most people are not aware of:
Dust
It will get everywhere.
And from time to time there will be a big dust storm that covers the whole Mars and will last for weeks.
That means no solar power.

I'm sure they'll've thought this through if they're serious about it, but I'm sceptical of it all.

I don't see why this project is not feasible. All it needs is a proper budget and help from scientist all around the world. This is history in the making. History that will be remembered by mankind even 10,000 years from now. This is the first step of mankind to became interstellar species. By not living on other planets we are like putting our eggs in one basket and it only takes 1 asteroid to pry us all to extinction.

Most of the problems right now on space travel is.

Radiation - This can be address by using water and other supplies to block the radiation. Moon materials can be used also as a radiation shield to limit the radiation intake to a acceptable levels.

Micro Gravity - This can be address by using rotating space craft or just the rotating only the living chamber of the space craft to create artificial gravity.

Food - This is the hardest when they reached mars. They cannot expect a supply of food from earth. So the new mars inhabitants must be able to grow food on their on own using the mars resources. They could food like they grow marijuana here on undergrounds.

Water - The must able to find sources of water of mars to survive. I think the best source of water is in the poles on its ice form or  maybe there is liquid water beneath it.

Energy - I think they can use solar energy or some nuclear energy for the mean time.

Air - I think the new mars inhabitants would living in in closed environments because 95 percent of mars atmosphere is carbon dioxide.

Radiation, Dust and Climate in Mars - I think it is best if they lived underground for now. They would be safe from radiation, dust and from the temperature extreme fluctuation.

Right now we have the technology to  terraform mars to make it livable for our species 100 from now all its needs is our united political will.

Live on mars will be hardship. I don't see how anyone want to live there. Suicidal tendencies everywhere...

There is nothing over there, as far as we know "to get" over there. "Suicidal tendencies" were describing people crossing the oceans, fighting marine monsters. But the risk back then made sense as people were looking for land, gold, spices, and other rare merchandises. If we find some kind of rare Martian minerals for our iphone 7, then going there will be a no-brainer, moving from "crazy-insane" to "smart entrepreneurial spirit".

Fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE says such a journey poses a real risk to life.

Promoting or being involved in a one-way trip to the Red Planet is prohibited in Islam, a fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE has ruled.

“Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam,” the committee said. “There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.”

Whoever opts for this “hazardous trip”, the committee said, is likely to perish for no “righteous reason”, and thus will be liable to a “punishment similar to that of suicide in the Hereafter”.

Somebody needs to tell this to all those Suicide Bombers  Grin.

The committee, presided by Professor Dr Farooq Hamada, said: “Protecting life against all possible dangers and keeping it safe is an issue agreed upon by all religions and is clearly stipulated in verse 4/29 of the Holy Quran: Do not kill yourselves or one another. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.”

Late in April 2013, Mars One, a Dutch company, invited volunteers to fly and live on the Red Planet, but there is no technology so far that would enable a return trip from Mars to Earth. The company is planning the first such trip to Mars in 2023 and another crew every two years afterwards with the goal of establishing a permanent human colony.

The applicants must be aged between 18 and 40 years and in good physical condition. They have to pay only $38 for the trip. Thousands of volunteers, including some 500 Saudis and other Arabs, have reportedly applied for the mission which costs $6 billion. The committee indicated that some may be interested in travelling to Mars for escaping punishment or standing before Almighty Allah for judgment.

There was a hoax reality show on in the UK a while ago called Space Cadets where they successfully tricked people into thinking they were going and actually went into space. Was pretty funny. You can watch it on youtube.

Human ingenuity has been perfecting the technology we will need on Mars, but what we can’t do is eliminate human follies. Beyond all the technical experiments performed, these simulated expeditions help prepare us to best deal with those.

call this a hunch .. but if the 1st set of people actually land on the planet.. somethings gonna happen and there gonna kill each other.. .

someones gonna poop at the wrong time .. eat the wrong food .. forget to wash there butt .. something very very very stupid ..

ask anyone whos ever been to basic training.. people in close quarters for long lengths of time are %($ holes..  the difference here is they are on another planet with little to no hope of coming back .. and no one to punish them for what they do.

Truth is that only 2,000 humans are going to live and work there. The food, the entertainment, the electricity, the gravity, and sending messages to the earth , It  all costs.....Bilions and  billions....

I think we still do not have such technology and the level of
How could safely be sure to keep these and similar missions could become a reality in the near future, although the idea is great and deserves to be praised ....

Yeah.  Well, a first step would be to attempt to grow something, somewhere on Mars.  A crop.  That would mean making some kind of dirt up that the crop would like, and creating a pressurized environment that could sustain it.
Temperatures inside that dome would have to be within the range that could sustain life, say 50-100F.

A.  Envision a dome surrounded by solar reflectors that concentrated the sun at the center.

B. Use a highly engineered crop.

C.  Fix the issues of temperature, pressure, partial pressure of needed gases, and need for nitrogen, carbon, and trace elements from raw Mars, brought in to support the life system.

D.  Figure out how to make (A) from native materials by robots and you are on your way to solving this riddle.

E.  Replicate and prove the process with 100 different crops.

F.  Grow some meat.  Same basic issues, does not matter if it is in test tubes or live animals.

In other words, think in terms of robot farmers and ranchers, somehow.  Then consider that when and if that existed, man could EASILY go to Mars.  But until it did exist, he gonna die there.

Oh and while we are on the subject, Mars is not capable of being "terraformed", because of the lack of a magnetosphere.

Boatloads of bad science and mystical thinking here.
