And how do they get the miners to deploy a new mining software version every 10 days?
I sense a major nightmare in that idea.

Thought this one might be a good point of discussion.

Digibyte is currently testing a new mining Algo that automatically changes itself every 10 days.
Will be very interesting to see how this turns out.

ProgPOW approved for grant by ZcashFoundation:
https://github.com/ZcashFoundation/GrantProposals-2018Q2/issues/15

Yeah, I came here looking to see if anyone had commented on this yet.  It's a long ways from anything being officially adopted, but this is a pretty huge step towards making that an actual possibility. Smiley

It's a nice start ..
Particularly for this year where ASIC got deployed on different coins. I remember Monero network hashrate getting 1Gh/s+ on February, and after hard fork on April 6 going back  to ~400 Mh/s after POW change.

Z9 mini is fairly quiet - and will probably become a space heater in about a year.

L3+ are like that.

Good heaters.
The L3 I hosted for a friend was stupid loud..

You have to underclock it! I have a couple running in cubes throughout our offices at various speeds to suit those in the cubes. 359 frequency, 62ºC temps at 2200 rpm. Nice and quiet space heater.

"FPGAs, GPUs and CPUs can themselves be considered ASICs."

Makes me wonder about the entire proposal when they can get a basic fact like that SO TOTALLY WRONG.

LoL @ the ASIC heaters discussion! Grin

There's one heater that's making money again against all odds. That Obelisk SC1 is making a massive comeback. I feel for the poor plonkers who sold their units for $400 before the fork... These puppies make almost $100 a day now... and sell for $5000 on ebay!

Market manipulation at its best.

or worst.

So ZCash might be going ProgPow? That's amazing news!

I don’t see how that means they are implementing it,  they just approved the grant

Check S9 firmware page on bitmain. They released a firmware that makes an S9 consume 1200w while hashing the same.

I think the best type of space heater would actually be a water cooled GPU rig. However the issue with this is cost and depending on how many GPUs you are planning on keeping in the rig, it might become bulky.

There are many cheap water cooling kits you can get for certain GPUs, however I think the max you can get away without having pipes going everywhere is max 2 GPUs per rig.

This would be very quiet, almost silent and the GPUs have the best profit/watt used compared to say an D3 or S7 ASIC miner.

My AR-15 ID's itself as a toaster. Want breakfast?
This is pretty incredible.  You can buy an L3+ right now for about the same price of a space heater.  That says a lot.
Is there a way I can downclock some of the newer ASIC's and just run them as space heaters? If I can get them quiet enough.. makes sense to do.

Yes I was going to do this also however its very difficult to keep them quiet. The only Antminer i've owned that was quiet was an Antminer S3. And it was only quiet after I put in some quiet case fans and undervolted it to the max. I think at 300 Watts, it was a good balance between being quiet and not overheating.

The issues with the other Antminers is they are more or less the same shape and usually require over >1kW of power and that is impossible to keep quiet. Sure you can do those mufflers and enclosed boxes however that is going to be very bulky and will make your house look like a dump and your wife will hate it.

I was able to get pretty quiet results with S7's running full-bore...

make sure they are in their own space (I had mine basically in a tote surrounded by eggfoam) with ducting connected and sealed to the outlet and inlet.   With about 2 meters+ of ducting on either end(non insulated mind you),  it was no worse than a pc running.

Things are so dead with alt coins.

Im going to leave this here if its okay, its an invite for some new shitcoin but it seems to be alright.  Only good for 5 people.  Might as well sign up with airdrop shitcoins since we all need some extra profit.
