Hello

I'm new in world of cryptocurrency....
so I miss the bus for BTC...what Alt-Coin is best for starting?
ANC,LTC,XPM or?

I have a great computer, and i'm going to mine with contract miners
I would mine anoncoin if i were you. Difficulty is still low (14) while litecoin is almost 1500. Both currencies are scrypt based, so no ASIC and FPGA miners (yet).
There are some decent pools out there.

Thinking about purchasing XPM, PPC, LTC. From what I gather PPC would be safer long-term? Although it seems like LTC will increase in worth faster than PPC, and have generally more widespread usage. XPM just because. All the other coins seem too fringe or abstract without real difference. Thoughts?

Go for LTC and PPC, maybe FTC. I follow FTC in past several days it gonna pop in next year for sure, but that my opinion. These 3 are mine to folow LTC, PPC and FTC.

Diversification in the post-cryptocurrency world means, in part, diversifying the blockchains on which your coin balances reside.

Using Bitcoin as example, CoinValidation may in essence compromise the usefulness and reliability of the Bitcoin blockchain. Other blockchains, such as Litecoin's, possess all the characteristics that make the Bitcoin blockchain so resilient and reliable, but would remain un-tampered with by centralized authorities. And if the same happens to Litecoin, we move to another blockchain. Owning altcoins is a hedge against hampering regulation or unforeseen security issues of the blockchain on which all your wealth is represented.

In this period of uncertainty about sovereign governments' intentions for Bitcoin, it only makes sense to diversify your your holdings by placing a portion of your wealth into some alt-coins that check out under due process.

I had exactly this (mine was called FairCoin) idea this weekend:
 https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/proof-of-work-based-on-human-energy-only-343986

The crux for this to work is a ProofOfWork job that is hard for computers such as reCAPTCHAs but easy for humans; while easily verifiable by computers. Said puzzles need to allow the proofed integration of a list of transactions and a previous block's hash, to be chain-able and signing transactions.

Faircoin because:: This would provide both an adoption path and an income to the third world, where hard currencies are much valued, and human intellect work is under valued.

still thinking it through tho, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(and instructions on how to exit from the newbie lockdown too...)

TIA,
h

I'm trying QRK and SRC right now, cheap, but easy to mine on any machine. Made a tad bit of profit in Criptsy so far.

I believe that coins with real world application of algorythms like PPC, XPM, CureCoin and others make the most economic sense though as they are creating value, not just using electricity for maintaining the network.

I agree with you that coins designed to leverage compute cycles toward solving mathematical challenges with real-world applicability is really compelling, and likely to draw more folks into the alt coin space.

May I ask what your interest in QRK is?  I'm a little unclear as to what its differentiating features are... It sounds like it's focused on security, but does it offer any actual real-world advantage over BTC?

Keep an eye on Primecoin(XPM). Was apparently added to some chinese exchange yesterday and today the price went up by almost 150%. BUT, be aware that at its peak it was still 3 times higher than this.

It's a cool alt because it truly is unique. And it is still CPU only making it quite nice to solomine on your PC, works great to mine at the same time as your GPU mines something else.

I made quite alot of Bitcoins(yes i converted em, but can you blame me with the BTC prices?). A friend made more than 200btc mining this. And with the price rise of btc lately, I think its actually quite nice to mine it again.

Here is some of the most important things to know about it.

Fellow altcoin lovers,

United Scrypt Coin is in the final stages of development.

The coin can be merge-mined with LTC, or any other scrypt_1024_1_1_256_sp coin. It has the goal of uniting all available scrypt hashing power, to make the most secure scryptcoin ever.

We all know, most of the small coins on cryptsy can be 51%ed by any serious pool. Since the value of a coin is limited by the cost of an 51% attack; the only way to create a viable altcoin is by merged mining it.

Announcement will follow in time on the real altcoin forum.

Peace.

I am looking forward to reading and learning all the information I possibly can about mining.  Sure is interesting having to learn all these acronyms and how things work and the variety of coin mining out there.  Currently decided to mine GLD so, hopefully I'm doing it right and can get some use outta these old AMD cards I abandoned awhile ago.

Again thanks everyone for the information and the assistance thus far!  Looking forward to being part of the community.

The way I see it, its a good idea to stack some of as many alt coins as possible early on when it's easy to mine.  As long as you get in early it takes you no time at all. Then you just sit on them, if they go nowhere (as I'm sure most will) then its no great loss, however if they explode...

I remember back in the day when BTC was around 12USD, I thought Litecoin would prob amount to nothing, but that seems to be coming along nicely now. In cryptocurrency more than anything else, we just can't tell what the future will bring. I plan to cover as many of the bases as possible Smiley
