No, it's not a crazy idea in my opinion. Online income for some people can be used as a main source of income and some are not and this really depend on what online work you are doing. I can give you an example that Youtuber, blogger, and online-shop are much more reliable to meet your need and lifestyle than the income you get if you become a government employee. You can still invest some of your income online as a reserve of money in the future, it's up to you what you choose. But it might be a crazy idea if the online jobs they do are not able to make end meet so they also have to have other job in the real world.

Some people I know (my friend) are blogger and youtuber with an average income of $10K-$20K per month. They are married and have children and I don't think they should get another job just to make end meet. So I hope you can think much more realistically than just making an opinion with your 1 friend's experience.

many in my country as a youtuber, and they on average have a fantastic income. if we know how and are famous people, it seems easier to become a youtuber. this is technological progress, especially during a pandemic like today, of course, working from home is the main choice, and there are also my friends who actually quit their jobs to run their online store businesses, and currently they live quite well.

The only thing we can do to protect ourselves from big losses is we should never go all-in on a project, however promising it looks.

I just want to add one thing, which I think is very important for those working online with their work hours not regulated. It's not about not working 24/7. To stay healthy you shouldn't work more than 9 hours per day, on average, and you should have at least one day off per week, but 2 would be better.

Well if you have the capital, then there are lots of hustles that you could enter. One is selling. Selling in online platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, Shopify or Lazada can make you really good money if you know the tricks. You can buy at alibaba some good products then resell it for good profits. But still you need some capital for that. Another thing is investing in crypto. Do some future trading or just spot. Read some tutorials and research. Knowledge can really make money out of nowhere.
