Under EU law Apple now offers to repair or replace a product within two years if "Defects present when customer takes delivery".

Apple offer a voluntary 1 Year warranty in the UK and Ireland. As I said our local legislation is what decides this. Italy may opt for the EU 2 year Directive but the UK does not and other countries will likely vary in their local laws.
Apple also stipulate what voids this warranty (their voluntary one) and that includes:
'(d) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, liquid contact, fire, earthquake or other external cause; (e) to damage caused by operating the Apple Product outside the user manual, the technical specifications or other Apple Product published guidelines; (f) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider ("AASP"); '
