After reading lots of stories on the effects of being an addicted gambler, I feel it's 100% possible to tell myself that I can never be addicted to gambling and won't ever get addicted.
You can't tell that to yourself until you try it and face all the challenges of gambling. I had a friend who said that, but when he bet for the first time and won, he became addicted because he actually believed that he could make a living in gambling; beginner's luck can sometimes become a curse because it deceives you on what gambling actually is.

Quote
If for instance, I decide that I'm only going to gamble once a week and that at each time I will only gamble with an amount like $20 based on my current financial strength, would I ever become addicted to gambling?  Isn't it because you don't have any plan in place and just gamble as your spirit leads that makes you become careless with your gambling and become addicted to the process? Just want to ask this question;
It's not the amount that will make you addicted or control addiction, it's your perception and experience that will turn you addicted to gambling; people become addicted because they find the pleasure and excitement addictive; they cannot find that pleasure in the things they do to enjoy, so gambling become the substitute.

No one wants to get addicted in the first place, however, our actions and behavior as we gamble either pushes us towards or away from the risk of addiction. So I guess it is partially our choice given that we are aware of its risk but some people are still embracing it by means of betting big amounts continuously and allowing themselves to be emotionally affected by betting outcome. Key to this is self discipline however, not all people have the initiative to set limits or to stop when they need to, as they gamble. Greed and frustrations are the emotions you should be avoiding if you don't want to be one of the cases of the mentioned condition.
Gamblers have lifted addiction to a prime icon, by becoming elite candidates for compulsive gambling. Addiction is a behavior and all behavior are choices says Jeff Schalar, author of addiction is a choice. Technically, players also need to do away with the thought that addiction originates from anything else other than themselves. Presumably, similar idea holds for the reason why players think less of the control they have over compulsive gambling habit. Thereby, allowing their emotions to be toiled with different unacceptable ways of thinking which may lead to addiction. Such as going for monetary fulfilments.
Sad reality but that's jusy how some people value money or use it. The bigger the drive to get rich, the more they would be holding to their bets and luck. Indirectly but to some people that's the only way for them to climb the social strata 'coz in some countries, wages are so low, which I think another factor to consider in some countries.

I've gone through multiple journals on responsible gambling methods and how responsible players go about their daily gambling habits, and still don't find effective techniques stated by those writers which can be equivalent to mind control. Though, almost impossible to achieve by any player, mind control actually effects all the available prevailing techniques attached to escaping compulsive gambling. One journal stated that responsible players tend to gamble with a specific bank account designated for only gambling, if a player can't control his mind, wouldn't he rush to his second account after exhausting what's on the gambling account. Their plans of attaining financial freedom, always, bites the dust, because gambling wasn't created or designed to help players skip over the normal acceptable means of reaching financial liberation.

Can you comfortably tell yourself that you have never been addicted to gambling and that you can never be addicted to gambling because of how you go about it?

Theoretically, we can say it simply and easily. but at the same time, someone out there may need help to get out of their excessive habits. we could say, addictive disorder. If I had to speak honestly, perhaps up to now I could be said to be a gambling addict. yeah, I'm more comfortable saying that than I am saying I'm not an addict. The reason is, until now I am still involved in betting or gambling. although with experience, there are many new understandings and changes to the ideology of gambling. a simple example, I used to think gambling was a fast way to get money. As you get older and more experienced, gambling is quite complicated but fun. not just knowing how to get wins and profits. but also think about other aspects, for example the risks we will face. You could say I'm still a gambler, although I often say that I limit every entertainment of this type of gambling. However, there are times when I can get lost due to many factors. That doesn't mean I don't have self-control, but staying consistent with self-control is not as easy as we say. Moreover, we have to make it a habit to be disciplined every time we gamble. however, it is the real challenge for gamblers. as you said in this thread, sometimes someone has no boundaries regarding gambling, they will look for ways to earn money so they can vent their desire to gamble. But actually I agree with what you said, that addiction is purely our choice. it's just, it's not as easy as we say in this thread. To implement it, it requires a broad understanding and the importance of knowing what gambling is for ourselves.

People become addicted to gambling, not only because they gamble often. It always depends on the character of a person and how much he can control his emotions and himself. For such people, excitement indicates how healthy the person playing's nervous system is. Constant thoughts about the game without control of the money that is spent, as well as the release of dopamine during the game, all add up to one very difficult-to-treat disease. But the OP is right; a person chooses his path. It is no secret that many become addicted, and knowing this, people should be careful with their thoughts to stop in time.

isn't addiction a choice?
It does becomes a choice when you're still in the right mind of yours. But when you're already hooked, do you think that you'll still be able to control yourself from such? I don't think so. That's why it is no longer a choice for those that have already been addicted, they have no choice and they can't help themselves anymore.
That's why one should allow themselves get addict so they won't get to a point where it's uncontrollable a point where they have no choice and can't help themselves like you stated, I think the OP is right to say it's a choice cause it's every gamblers decisions to avoid those things that would get them addicted at the first place but then they refused to gamble responsibly and allowed it get to a point where it becomes uncontrollable, one thing most gamblers that got addicted lack is self-control and discipline cause those are the traits that could help one monitor their gambling habits and also avoid getting addicted, I'm sure that even most casinos indicate that gamblers should gamble responsibly so why should any gambler decide to go against that or do they know more that the owners of the business?

Can you comfortably tell yourself that you have never been addicted to gambling and that you can never be addicted to gambling because of how you go about it?

It depends on the factors that is leading someone into addiction. Every gambler go into such state from time to time, so it depends on the psychology and understanding of gambling that will make you have that emotional control to get out of it. Like one factor is chase of loses. If you keep believing that you don't need to lose your bet then you are definitely going to be chasing back the loses made and that will further lure that gambler further more into gambling and that gives room to addiction.

Again if you don't see gambling as luck based then you will keep relying on only your analysis for your bet and forgetting the luck aspect of gambling. Again, some gamblers are in it for only source of income. To use gambling as a source of income will definitely push you further to gamble.

Hence, to be addicted we are likely to be faced with those factors at one point in time and the capacity of controlling ourselves out of it is what makes the difference. As a gambler, one should have gotten into such level but it depends on how deep you were involved that will matter to come out quick or get deeper.

At some point of my life, I did.

But fortunately, I was able to overcome it and I think when you get older you have to deal with more serious things in life. And those factors will help you to give yourself a reminder on how to avoid being addicted in gambling.

Someone can get addicted in gambling because they have no purpose in this life and don't know what to do to earn money.
I don't know how knowing ones purpose in life relates to controlling your gambling habit habit and even though I I'm still of the opinion that becoming addicted to gambling or deciding not to ever become addicted to gambling is totally up to the individual, I am not ignorant of the fact that anyone can get somehow entangled and become a chronic addict somehow. I've read of some popular football stars that got addicted someway along thier carrier, this is not because they lacked purpose in life or Carrier, they have purpose but thier are stages when some people become not capable of controlling their gambling habit and goes on to affect even your carrier.

So, make sure you have something to do in this life and know what high paying jobs that you interested, fight everything you have to be a skillful person.

Addiction is 100 your choice, but make sure that you should be mature enough, so that you can understand both risk and reward before making a decision.
maturity for me is what helps you to guide against being careless with your gambling. It's more of having the knowledge that being careless and not taking inventory in how you're going about your gambling will certainly lead you to gambling above your financial strength and lead you to possibly becoming addicted.

You can gamble with weekly or monthly allotted gambling money but when it crosses its limit it must be classified as addiction. Constant gambling can lead you to addiction when you keep losing and your funds are replenished. I think addiction can't be a choice because you can't risk your family's future for your choice. You can implement your choice only when it is positive in itself and will try to keep the family better.

Almost 90% of the people who have a thing against gambling do so because they feel that gambling is addictive. But come to think of it, isn't addiction a choice? Yes, it's all a choice when they dare to take risks just to catch up and recover their losses, especially as long as they still get money to finance their gambling, they won't stop until they really go bankrupt, that's why I prefer to gamble on the weekends, after all I have to fill my working days. with a job to earn money and finance their family's needs as well as their future, after all why have to play gambling every day isn't it certainly boring, something that I play over and over will usually make me bored so that's why playing gambling is normal, you don't have to gamble every day .

There is nothing I need to pursue from gambling if I have to play gambling every day I will not win money every day, so why should I do it every day when every weekend if I win the game shouldn't that be better, the point is that life is a The choice is whether to continue playing or stop, gambling addicts are actually aware of this but sometimes they often ignore it and prefer to continue playing every day without caring about the people closest to them, that's a fact because my friends like that like to gamble every day. I have never been addicted to gambling so I just gamble as much as I want to play and when I want to stop gambling I will definitely stop.

The addiction is produced by irresponsible gambling, when a person is addicted to gambling it means that he gambles with no rules and no limits on it. But we cannot say why other people are addicted, but I am not addicted, because each person is different and we cannot equate our situation with theirs. If we are not currently addicted, then that is very good, meaning we gamble responsibly, but if other people are addicted to it, then we should pity them because they also don't want that situation to happen to them.

If you have experienced addiction you might want to know that most times it's not because they enjoyed gambling all the time but because they were enjoying the profits coming from it. At some points in gambling we may just be pushed to the winning end and then we just want to keep playing unknowingly to us we are gradually becoming addicted. We don't wish for something like addiction to come to us. But we cannot predict for sure that we will never get addicted as it's not by choice. It's just something that happens when we loss control of our emotions. When this happens we just want to either enjoy the game and keep playing.

If you are gambling with plan and budget, then you will find it very hard to be addicted to gambling but there is a simple way that even with budget you might still end up as an addict is when you start to be greedy and having that feeling that you will never forfeit you lost then definable you will end up as a gambler addict because you will find it hard to control your self because you will be over control by your mind that you wish to be greedy

Moreover you will can be addict with out you knowing because you will just feel like you are not addicted but just chasing your dream but you will end up running your life when you just go out of your budget in the sense that budget normally go a long way to help prop in their finances and life

it's a choice.
gamblers are two types:

1-profession

2-fun

those who gamble because it's there profession know when to stop and most of them are good at math. but overall it's not a good profession and most of them barely make good money out of it.

those who gamble for fun often lazy people who easy money to buy some material goods, nobody with the right mind will gamble his feature unless his future is already dark.
but yes, you are right my friend.

uhh... you don't choose to be addicted. nobody wants to become addicted, being addicted is a very awful place to put yourself in. Gambling addiction is a complex mental problem, I suggest you read studies about gambling addiction and its psychological effects, you'll also learn that it can still manifest despite you trying your best not to become addicted to gambling. also, you'd be surprised that there are people who are genetically more prone to addiction(not just gambling) compared to other people.
you don't choice to be addicted but you can to stop.
I had a depression and I start to smoke in an early age about 20 cigarette a day but one day I decided to stop, my head was killing me and the withdrawal symptoms didn't stop for an entire month but I didn't care
trust me, you can stop

the mechanisms of addiction are not as linear as one might imagine and as I have described in other topics, just search on pubmed and you discover that they are phenomena that have only been studied extensively in the last 30 years. for sure more understanding of the process will come in future years.

I don't think any of us are immune to this problem.
some have a strong background and a very disciplined approach that avoids (at first glance) to fall into this abyss, others unfortunately end up like this but I don't think they are to blame... just don't kid with this problem. Mine suggestion: crypto gamblers have the advantage of cold wallet. try to use as much as you can include timelocks and other way for safe storage!

I have never been addicted to gambling, because I havent met IRL a person, who and whos opinion I respect, that got successful and become rich from gambling. Nor someone who could give me a guide or strategy of success. In fact, I have never aimed to connect my life with gambling. For me it is pure entertainment, and most important it is only one of entertainment options. As to money, I find myself comfortable and better at earning on regular job.

For some people they can be more responsible with what they done especially in gambling because if they can able to do that then those people will have good self control and they can enjoyed almost every their gambling activities without worrying to being an addicted but not all people can do that so that's why this time i have opposite opinion compared to OP because in my opinion any addiction whether gambling or drug addiction will usually affect the brain function of a person

And so for some people usually they don't realize that they have become addicted because what they thinking is they will always look for ways to satisfy their cravings without thinking of stopping so in this case addiction is not pure 100% their choice because i am sore those people doesn't want it happend but indeed if those people want to be healed they have to accept their condition that they are addicted and asking help to the people who has the ability to cure the addiction

Can you comfortably tell yourself that you have never been addicted to gambling and that you can never be addicted to gambling because of how you go about it?
It would be very hypocritical for anyone to say that they themselves have never been addicted to gambling. I think everyone who gambles has experienced the point of gambling addiction and experienced serious problems, because it is the desire to win that makes gamblers lose self-control. and I myself have experienced this, it's good when this happens because when I lose control of myself by making bets beyond my means, it makes me aware and no longer gamble excessively, when I have thoughts of wanting to gamble, I can now get rid of them easily. unlike when I was so enthusiastic about gambling that it was very difficult to get rid of the feeling of wanting to gamble, even now I am no longer that interested in gambling. When I get more income and want to play then I will play, but even then if I really want to do it because there is no longer a strong pull that makes me really want to gamble.

Gambling addiction is indeed the result of our own choices, because the decisions, choices and actions of our own thoughts make us addicted to gambling or lose self-control. It would be unethical to blame other people, perhaps friends who initially invited us to gamble, because if we had Having good self-control, maybe what we will do is refuse our friend's invitation and avoid gambling. With addiction, I think everyone will experience a point where it can make them sober, even though the possibility is small, and I feel lucky because I was able to become aware when I experienced a point that made me sober.

I am more of the opinion there is a shared responsibility between ourselves allowing addiction actually take over our lives and also the context in which that scenario could happen and make our life more difficult. For example, it is easy to say (as a normal person) it is not hard to fight addiction to gambling, but in reality there are people who are genetically more inclined to fall for behavioral addictions or repetitive behavior.
People with autism and ADHD comes to mind when I think of people who are more vulnerable to addiction to gambling, it is not completely dependent on their choices, there parts of their nature they cannot control.
Though, that does not mean discipline won't help, for the majority of us, though.
