AFCON quarter final fixture:

Today: Gambia vs Cameroon
Today: Burkina Faso vs Tunisia

Jan 30: Egypt vs Morocco
Jan 30: Senegal vs Equatorial Guinea

These are now unpredictable matches but if I will have to choose teams that would win, I will choose Cameroon, Tunisia, Egypt and Senegal. But this is quarter final, anything can happen, we can't say there is any underdog in the tournament again, they are all good.

In this African cup of nations, the team and country that has really impressed me is Cameron. They have been the side with majority of goals, and their performance is really worth winning the trophy.
Nigeria has also impressed me but my best team goes to Cameron, they showed how good they are in the field of play. While a team like Ghana surprised me because they have a very strong team, and yet they were eliminated by a team you least expected.

We're on top of the table for Group L thanks to goals from Victor and Samuel. After missing out on the 2019 AFCON to Algeria, I believe Nigeria will put in more effort to edge out opponents this round. In group L, I see Nigeria and Benin being the two teams to qualify from our group.  Teams I'm on the lockout for in this tournament :

  • Nigeria
  • Algeria
  • Senegal
  • Egypt

*Subject to changes

Nigeria is one of the champion candidates so there is no need to doubt they qualify from the group
My prediction is that Nigeria and Egypt will be in the quarter-finals and one of them will be the champion
Football game is of the most difficult to predict who will win and who will lose the game. Nigeria team did very well to the extent that many people believe they will the final stage but unfortunately the game of football is not based of our personal feeling because a lot of things do happen with the team that do change the whole thing. Things like the aspect of Players action and in action, Referry judgement, coach selection and pattern that he want can all affect the outcome of the game and that is what happen to Nigeria team. Aina shouldn't have allowed the shot and the goalkeeper has his own blame too.

I think they will just play defensive and try to win it in the penalties which is really a dangerous plan to have.
Planning to defend is not a good plan, there's a common saying that attack is the best form of defense. Even if Egypt manages to get a goal, maybe Salah scores, who is to say that their defense can prevent the Moroccan side from scoring, they have not had a clean sheet, and we all know their defence can be breached. I think the game will be less physical but still competitive, judging from the fact that they are both countries from same region and may play same pattern of football.

Morocco have scored seven goals in four AFCON matches this season, conceding just three. From this one can easily guess how strong the team is. They have the ability to score goals. So if Egypt decides to play defensively against such a team, they will make a big mistake. The Egyptian players must try to score against Morocco. If Egypt concedes a goal in the first half, they will not be able to win this match. I think so. I will probably bet on Morocco's victory.
From my own point of view both countries are North African thus share a similar pattern of play and knows how to play each other very well, both team equally has quality and good players, I can't precisely predict the winner between the two countries because any of the two can qualify and I think whoever qualifies will reach the finals, The north Africans if in-form are always unstoppable just like when Algeria won the last edition by beating both Nigeria and Senegal in semi and finals.

Senegal and Cameroon are so far the only teams in the tournament that show a confident game, the rest surprise (or even shock like Nigeria).
A Cameroon vs Senegal game in the final will be intense and something everyone who has been following up on the competition will want to see. With the way both teams have played so far, i think if they don't let the current ratings get into their heads, getting to the final is almost sure. If any other team gets to the final aside these two teams, it is just a lucky run. IMO the other teams have not been convincing enough in performance so far.

If we consider the "accumulated" achievements of the teams, then such a final will indeed be the most fair and interesting. The problem is that in the playoffs one match can turn everything around (due to luck, or vice versa due to a ridiculous removal) so I would not be surprised even if none of these teams play in the final. But both teams should overcome the quarter-final stage easily, this can be argued with a 90 percent probability. Surprises are possible in the semifinals.

If I'm to put my money on either team, I surely would be going with Morocco given how well they've been all competition no long, but as we all know, that doesn't guarantee them anything, I think Egypt will have to do more than just sit on the back foot and absorb all pressure with the hope of catching them on the break, I don't think they can handle the pressure from Morocco for the entire 90 minutes.

Morocco as a team is much more stable. For a long time they did not face defeat. They are unbeaten in the last 28 matches. Morocco is an awesome team now. It will be very difficult for Egypt to win against such a team. Egypt will win if Salah can play well and score goals. There is no other star player in the Egyptian team except Salah. So if the team wants to take to the semi-finals then Salah must score in this match.

Well I doubt Egypt will be able to pass Morocco honestly. Ok they have some good players in addition to Salah but Morocco showed so far a better and solid performance. Odds are good for Morocco @2.4 comparing to Egypt @3.4
Now Cameroon has to get the help of the VAR, Covid, referees and extra corruption power to be able to lift the trophy. They are a joke for me, maybe I am exaggerating but their last game was definitely a joke.
Egypt have had to go to penalties already this tournament, and I think that's exactly the approach they'll be taking this time around. They'll be playing rather defensive hoping they can either get a counter attack with Salah or they'll try to hold on until penalties which I think they've a realistic chance of winning with their players.

I agree with this because without this approach realistically they don't have much of a chance if they just try to win in normal time.

But if they can actually score with Salah being on the counter-attack then it will obviously be really good for them, but I honestly doubt that. I think they will just play defensive and try to win it in the penalties which is really a dangerous plan to have.

Plenty of teams look to defend, and counter attack. Hell, several teams in the Premier League utilize this tactic pretty well, especially when they're going against better sides on paper. That's exactly the tactic you should deploy against individually better players. Plus, attack being the best form of defense is only one saying, doesn't mean it's correct.

Personally, I don't think Egypt will be able to go toe to toe with Morocco, and it would be a mistake to do that. It'll likely be a very cagey affair with Egypt looking to counter attack. They have the players to do it effectively.

It's a fifty / fifty chance for both countries, but then I ain't seeing the Egyptians defending.
They have come this far, they have to show they're hungry for the next stage by winning the game.
Salah scoring will be another great goal to see, still can believe they'll come this far after Nigeria won them in the group stage.

It looks like only Egypt vs Morocco is the strongest game to predict as both teams have played well so far in the tournament and both teams deserve to move forward but only one will get the chance to do so.The other three games look relatively easy on paper but surprises can happen,it is just one game to be played, the odds are not low,the minimum of Cameroon and Senegal which in paper has the easiest games are at 1.55-1.6 right now.Burkina Faso can also be a surprise in the semifinals as the odds are 3.5 with 2.5 not a big difference so the bookies maybe expect a draw here.
Morroco vs egypte is the main game for this quarter finals and its the game i am looking forward to watch in my opinion morroco will pass even if egypte seem more ready especially after their performance against ivory coast, cameroon and senegal  shouldnt find difficulties getting past their opponents and as you said burkina faso and tunisia can be a tricky game and we might see a surprise.

Now we're in the quarter finals I'll give my predictions for the rest of the tournament:

Gambia 0 vs  2 Cameroon
Burkina Faso 0 vs 1 Tunisia
Egypt (P) 0 vs Morocco
Senegal 2 vs 0 Equatorial Guinea

For the semi's obviously depends on the draw (which I'm not exactly sure how that works in the AFCON), but I'm feeling a Senegal vs Egypt final, which Senegal take in normal time. Probably a 2-1 victory or 2-0 victory.

I think that your prediction are quite on the point. If we look at how these teams have played in this tournament we can expect an outcome which is going to look somewhat like that. I do want Egypt to win but if they face Senegal in the semi-finals, I also probably think that Egypt is going to lose that match, but Cameroon vs Tunisia is a hard one to predict in my opinion.

I'm thinking Egypt can be the better side with there compactness and strong attackers and good on penalty kicks. Cameroon didn't really impress me with there last game with Comoros playing a man down and yet bitting harder with the pedigree of the Cameroon. I expect that the next set of games will really show who is ready to lift the cup.

But in this set of games there is not one (except maybe Egypt - Morocco) where the main contenders for the title will meet. Cameroon and Senegal have easy opponents and it will be difficult to judge how ready they are if they win their matches. Burkina Faso and Tunisia are underdogs in this group of teams. The only thing we will be able to see in this round is how much Egypt can mobilize, at the moment their game is not convincing.

Maybe you are right that they will choose this strategy, but it is a risky one. Not only they could fall behind by a surprise goal, also it is not guaranteed that they win in penalties.
In 4 games Egypt scored 2 goals so far and only got 1 goal against them. I doubt they will change their strategy much, but then also a single goal could decide a game.

Morocco on the other side is at 7:3 goals in 4 games which is a lot on both sides, at least for the ongoing tournament. They will face a difficult game vs Egypt for sure.
I'd say its natural for the team with the lesser quality players overall to sit back a little. I don't think Egypt would be wise to go head to head with any of the remaining teams. I personally think sitting back, and looking for the counter attack is their safest bet, as you say they haven't conceded all that much this competition, which implies they have a decent enough defense. Then they have Salah who can score goals on his own at times.

I'd fancy Egypt on penalties though, they seem to be more composed, and have specialised penalty takers, at least more than Morocco do.

these next games should not be the reason once again the referees win attention with their constant red cards, it has become a shame a tournament like this have so many red cards and we have to also take attention that in africa many teams that organize the event become champions even if they are weak teams

It will be very difficult in Egypt's match against Morocco. They will have to beat Morocco first. If they can reach the final after beating Morocco, then if they play against Cameroon, I can agree with what they say. I think Egypt, Morocco, Cameroon and Tunisia are strong teams in this tournament. One of these four teams will be champion.  I'm looking forward to this cup game.
3 of your 4 teams are playing for only 1 spot in the final. Don't forget about Senegal. They have scored 3-0 goals in their first 4 games. While they did not show very entertaining football until now, they were highly efficient which can give them an edge against other teams.
