The scrypt hashrate is the only one that matters. No one cares for SHA256 on GPU nowadays.

If those numbers are correct, then the 280x is better for mining. They are a bit cheaper than 7970, and hansh at about the same speed.
To be honest, i was expecting a bit more from the 290x..

Seems not a good deal as expected, but if the power is way more efficient maybe I would give it a try...

Yeah, me too.
Until new 20nm production process, good old Tahiti or ASIC...

We first need Luke JR or ckolivas to add support in their scrypt mining programs...so we'll have to wait
Tbh, I don't see why mining software has to change. What an owner of a 290x card has to make sure is that drivers and OpenCL SDK are available.

I believe cgminer have to do some small update for the card to be efficient. Otherwise it might just have the same hash/j as 7970.

I'll watercool mine, but I'll run it on air till xmas. Not sure if I'll get reference or a non ref though. Depends on price and features.

That does look a little bit better but still, i am worried it will be hard to maintain that speed. I have read in tom's hardware review that these new cards will downclock when at high temps and will work at about 70% speed and these reference coolers dont seem to be able to handle the heat.

Anybody manage to find any info for AMD R9 290x the hash rate and power consumption?

Google Tom's Hardware r9 290x review...they have a bitcoin mining test.

EDIT: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/169402-to-slay-a-titan-amds-radeon-r9-290x-piledrives-nvidias-high-end-product-line/3

Thanks for that, but it seems really slow compare to the price. Now just need wait for someone to share the settings if it can overclock higher..

It's not slow at all...and it depends a lot more on temps, so reference cooler is a con with these. We might need wc or AC in the room to make these mine faster, cause of the new powertune algorithm.
Also, keep in mind that's bitcoin mining and not scrypt.

280X might be relevant again for mining...moreso than older cards:

http://www.chiploco.com/radeon-r9-280x-tahiti-xtl-29938/

Read that, look at the new square chip, looks like a cut down 290x chip or something.

Atleast stop quoting the big ass pictures of the 280x.

Stop linking 280x cards in a 290x thread. Link 290x cards or gtfo
