*** THIS IS A RAW RECORDING – THE EDITED VERSION WILL BE UPLOADED LATER ***

On today’s Beyond Bitcoin BitShares Dev Hangout bytemaster discusses blind transfers, stealth transactions, confidential transactions, stealth confidential transactions, stealth sharedrops, privacy, transactions per second, merchant interfaces, testnets, NullStreet Journal, DPOS Hub and Brownie.PTS.

Transcript Sample

[00:01:43] bytemaster: So many things have happened in the past week I have a hard time keeping up. I would say the most significant update is support for blind transfers or stealth confidential transactions. it has been tested and is passing and is integrated in the master branch of Graphene.

[00:02:16] fuzzy: so this is what we’ve been talking about in terms of being able to transfer privately?

[00:02:23] bytemaster: Yes, without any link between accounts or amount. We are still working on the wallet features for that, but that should be done by the end of today, at the command line wallet level. it won’t be available in the web wallet for some time, because that requires javascript implementation of the blind signing algorithms and that’s a lot of work and we have a lot of other things to do first.

[00:03:24] fuzzy: Is this the basic functionality? Will this be in the first release of BitShares 2.0?

[00:03:36] bytemaster: You will be able to do blind to transfers on the first release, if you have a full wallet on your computer, you can do it from the command line.

interesting...amazed this coin doesn't get more volume....when will Bitshares 2.0 drop?

Also, you might want to take a look at CannabisCoin.  Yeah been pushing it...  I like what they're trying to achieve. But they need a better team behind it though.  There's lots of potential in the crypto + Cannabis industry combination.  It's likely that both (industries) will be booming in the future.

What does it have that bitcoin doesn't? What would make it an attractive investment?

If you'd like a nice summary of *everything* that is going on in the BitShares ecosystem,
the latest (and last) NullStreet Journal just came out today.

Download - The Nullstreet Journal № 0.5

Newsletter on mailchimp

It took 50 pages contributed by a couple dozen authors to describe it all.

Over 2000 people have subscribed to it since this [ANN] thread started last month.

Here's an excerpt from the intro...

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST

Get ready to be blown away. That’s right, you now hold in your hands a genuine copy
of the biggest, baddest BitShares community newsletter since the dawn of PTS. What
more proof do you need that BitShares continues to expand and thrive, despite this
brutal and bipolar crypto bear-market? Hmm, yes...bi-polar bear. Quite apropos.

Great Plato’s Ghost! What a summer! Around the world, economic central planning is
taking a nasty beating, and governments are working overtime to hold it all together.
On the ground, the people are tired of being cheated and lied to, and some have
even begun to recognize the wisdom in Albert Einstein’s quote, “We cannot solve our
problems with the same level of thinking that created them.” The dominos are starting
to fall, and people are being jolted awake by visions of naked emperors marching
across the river Rubicon. Curious, I wonder how many of them are secretly hoping
the emperors get washed away when the levee finally breaks.

The important question, mixed-metaphors aside, is how will BitShares fit into the
picture? Well, very soon you’ll have the tools to explore and discover the answer for
yourself. Consider shareholder approved project funding, highly sophisticated user
issued assets, collateralized bond markets, price-stable SmartCoins, and a first-ofits-kind
crypto referral program to lure in every free-thinking entrepreneur under the
earth’s golden Sun. This is only a partial list and so...come again? Did I hear you say
viral?

BitShares is gearing up to launch one of the most secure, robust and downright revolutionary
trading platforms the world has ever seen. This is an auspicious moment
in human history - our potential for greatness exquisitely balanced upon the double
edged sword of crisis-opportunity. Lucky for us, a whole community of leaders, pioneers
and visionaries are stepping up to the plate, and Cass and I are thrilled to offer
you yet another humble testament to their dedication. That said, we invite you to sit
back, relax, and enjoy this final edition of the BitShares community newsletter: The
NullStreet Journal.

This is very interesting project...I have about 20k usd to invest I am thinking it may be a good idea now than later to invest?

If you're looking for an entry - now is the time in my opinion. price won't fall any lower, and will most likely rise with 2.0 which is sometime in the next 3-4 months

It already did.  Not sure if it can go down lower tho.  No one can really predict these things so be careful.

Here's the recording and transcript from Friday's global press conference with Bytemaster:

July 17, 2015 Mumble Transcript

Here's a brief sample:

[00:17:29] fuzzy: What does BitShares have to offer people, like the people in Greece, who have to worry about bank bail-ins?

[00:18:03] bytemaster: The foundation of all cryptocurrencies is a token that is not simultaneously someone’s else’s liability. You don’t have to worry about a bail-in. the token is what it is, it’s accepted by the market, so all you have to worry about is the market volatility. when the price goes down that’s like a bail-in, you’re getting a haircut. but when the price goes up you are making money. So what BitShares offers is the ability to speculate and gain leverage and gain the ability and that’s what all cryptocurrency projects do. They remove the need to trust someone and they make it so that arbitrary changes to the rules are not a norm. The other thing to do is they offer you greater freedom. You can transfer anywhere at anytime. You control your money entirely with your own brain-key and if you like you can go anywhere in the world. That’s something none of these financial institutions are doing. BitShares isn’t going to wake up one day and find out that you can only move 50 BitShares per day, that’s just not going to happen. Whereas the people in Greece are finding out that they can only access a small amount of their own money every single day. So that’s what it offers the users. The banks themselves are very interested in what blockchain technology can do to lower their cost. They want to see systems that have integrity, that are audit proof and can leverage the cryptographic security and permissions system that blockchains represent. So we’re seeing that BitShares and the technology behind Graphene is leading the way in features that banks actually need and want. And that’s why I said earlier a major bank is interested in working with us.

[00:19:56] fuzzy: I’m assuming that this would be a type of system that would be slightly offered if a bank would adopt it, they would want their own chain. is that assumption correct?

[00:20:10] bytemaster: Banks want all kinds of different things. Many things are internal, many things are public. But what I have heard from several Banks is that they don’t want Bitcoin, they don’t want any other cryptocurrency that is extremely volatile. They can’t deal with that kind of currency. That leaves us and a Ripple as being the options that the banks are looking at or some kind of custom solution. I suppose something like NXT with their asset exchange and user issued tokens is also viable. Maybe Ethereum someday, but banks also have the requirement of high transaction throughput. They can’t use a system that isn’t able to handle all of the internal transfers or all of the credit card transfers that goes on. They need something that’s ready today. Generally speaking I would say that BitShares and Graphene particularly are leading the way in the technologies that the big financial institutions actually want and is the closest public project to meeting the requirements.

[00:21:29] fuzzy: So this would protect users mostly from things like bail-ins. do you think that the old statement that the decentralized exchange at a protocol level almost ensures fair trades as opposed to the market manipulation by high frequency trading (HFT) and naked shorting. Do those still serve as strong benefits for those people especially?

[00:21:59] bytemaster: It’s an open order book, everyone can see exactly what the orders are and they can see when the trades go through and make sure that all orders are settled. You don’t have people trading with assets they don’t have which can happen on other exchanges. Of course if you’re trading IOU’s, well the issuer can create or may or may not have those IOU’s so you still have some trust there, but fundamentally the exchange does final settlement with every trade whereas other exchanges don’t do that. Which means it’s a lot hard to manipulate these markets because you have to actually acquire the asset first. You can’t sell an asset you don’t have to manipulate the market. but there are still going to be people who use bots that don’t place their orders in the order book, instead they place their orders when they see something they want to buy rather than having it sit there advertising to the world. So there’s going to be a mixture, you can do relatively high frequency trading once every couple of seconds on Graphene, so that’s faster than most people can keep up with, but that’s not really manipulation, that’s just people thinking they have an algorithm that understands the market when it’s really just a high tech version of gambling.

[00:24:02] bytemaster: In centralized Services whoever is closest could get the information faster that’s just the way the speed of light works. In our system the center point moves with every block. So it puts everyone on equal footing all around the world. If you’re the Witness you are closest by definition, but you’re not always the closest which undermines most trading strategies that depend upon consistently being the closest.
