Quickest answer would be tradition and its a unique element.    It doesnt often get 'used up' in any quantity, but its usually related to conductivity, radiation, heat or resistance to corrosion.   If silver or copper didnt react with air they both might be the simpler choice to achieve the same thing.     The fact it is used for some tasks most commonly electronics, is the primary disagreement for gold vs other forms of currency and that it has a five thousand year or more legacy as traded money across borders.    
   I wont argue for or against it especially and its nature is inert.  I'm fairly certain gold gets used more in future then now just because they screwed up this paper debt idea far too much for it not to collapse and/or have consequences.    The biggest idea I've heard most probable to happen is SDR notes which is how the IMF would bail out something as massive as the US Federal reserve and thats just another form of debt and paper, no point then arguing over gold when its going to be a whole range of new alternatives to the old dollar system.

I'm fairly certain moves in debt markets for QE or political government debt is a part of what is driving crypto, in equal measure people are prepared to accept bail outs with false value but dismiss the utility and value crypto could bring in secure transactions.  The more ridiculous the deficit measures for government debt gets the more required an alternative will be, theres not many (any?) people qualified and willing to assess both markets but its clear they cannot reverse or fix QE programs and crypto will not be going away

We're in a topsy turvy world where the 'communist' money might be more sound then the 'capitalist' money, both Russia and China have been net buyers of gold for over a decade with big rises to gold in their foreign reserves and currency backing.    Both seem determined to move away from dollar reliance and if anything under report the move to gold, since dollar was originally based off exchange to gold moving back to this standard would revert almost half a century of monetary drift and debt deficit financing
   I dont consider Russia, China communist just like I dont consider USA or EU as capitalist, they dont follow the definitions

   It only matters if people want it to matter but if the dictatorship type countries have more wealth to exchange for imports then the debt ECB or Federal reserve has to exchange for goods it might precipitate a shift in world order.     I think that 50 year storm possibility is part of why crypto is surprisingly strong with endurance and demand far past what sceptics expected possible
