Rolling out an update for the wallet which should fix the facebook giveaway bug in 30 minutes. Check afterwards that you have got version 1.4.1 installed. Sorry for the inconveniences, but we can not really explain why suddenly the href attribute of the facebook connect had a trailing slash, which made the extension not recognize the link anymore...

We are giving out free coins for bug reports, too. Wink

Repost from Medium:
https://medium.com/@MrAwesome/solving-america-s-top-fears-by-tipping-a-billion-websites-4a9744f1288b

Introductory blog article about WeTipCoins.com, the sister project of CoinAwesome for Bitcoin.

"Solving America’s Top Fears by Tipping a Billion Websites

The web is awesome because we can create and discover new content every day. Digital content can be anything: starting with articles, questions and answers, homepages, images, videos, music and even games or software in general. Content that makes us happy, makes us smile or cry, makes us think or helps us to do our daily job.

We all love the free and open web but it comes with a hidden cost

Total number of websites
The web is this unprecedented huge free and open platform that for the first time in human history allows everyone to be a creator. But monetization of this content is a difficult, even though nobody would doubt that huge amounts of good stuff get created, curated and consumed every single minute.

Keep the web free and open using easy P2P micro-donations
Since the dawn of the web micro-payments and donations have been a hassle. Nobody likes to fill out long forms. Particularly when the credit card numbers you are punching in are essentially the password to your bank account. Just look at following form. It did not even fit on my 27" screen…

Financial Times Sign Up Form
This is terrible, everyone will admit it. The good news is, that it does not have to be like this anymore. Digital media companies really do not need to, nor should they know all the details of their readers. These long forms only hurt their conversion rate and their core business: creating, curating and delivering good content.

Long forms are a big hassle
And technologically there is nothing which stops us to pay with one single click in a very secure way for every good article we read, instead of signing up on every new media site with our credit card number. The pay-as-you-go model was a huge success for apps and the cloud, so why should it not work for bloggers or publishers and media companies? People usually do not like to pay for bundles if there is a more selective way. With printed magazines, this model was not possible. With the web and digital content it easily is.

Fear of credit card fraud tops terrorism
Further, the fear of becoming a victim of credit card fraud and identity theft in general even tops the fear of becoming a victim of terror in the US. The problem with credit cards is systematic: they where never designed for the Internet.

“Americans Are More Afraid Of Credit Card Fraud Than Of Terrorism”
Big companies with established reputation (like the Financial Times from above) can easily create enough trust on their websites to let users type in their credentials. But what about small bloggers or people who write helpful answers on Q&A sites? Can they easily accept micro-payments or donations for their work? For small publishers and content creators who are not inside a trusted platform (and give a huge cut to it), it is basically impossible to monetize their work in any way other than with ads. Moreover, the platform makes most of the profit and does not forward earnings to its content-generating users. To change how monetization on the web works we need simple secure direct P2P-micro-payments and donations.

“Surveillance is the business model of the Internet — Al Gore recently called it a “stalker economy.” All major websites run on advertising, and the more personal and targeted that advertising is, the more revenue the site gets for it. As long as we users remain the product, there is minimal incentive for these companies to provide any real privacy.” — Bruce Schneier
There is nothing more rewarding for a creator than to see that his last work went viral and generated him thousands of clicks…

What if it was as easy as clicking a ‘like’-button to transfer real value (money and attention) instead of worthless likes (only attention)? What if this system could be designed in a transparent, open and still super-secure way? Could this help content creators survive and deliver more awesome content consistently?

For about 6 years, starting with Bitcoin, we have had truly global currencies and secure direct push-payments on the Internet. Initially, these new systems were hard to use and they were indeed made for the Internet, but not for the web and not for the browser. But luckily, with sheer Internet inertia the tech matured enough — and that made me start the…

Awesome Internet Project

At WeTipCoins.com consumers support content creators directly with real value in a secure and easy way. So that they both can focus more on awesome content, instead of forms and ads.
WeTipCoins is build upon the browser wallet, the community platform, the ‘awesome’-button and a decentralized trust which secures the tips.

The WeTipCoins Wallet Extension for Chrome and Chromium (soon Firefox & Mobile) lets you transfer real value to any website and also prove your new identity in a secure way.
the wallet inside your browser
The WeTipCoins Wallet is made for the web. It is made for the largest content platform and it sits inside your browser. It keeps your bitcoins safe through securing the key to your new decentralized identity. It enables you to accept and send bitcoins instantly on any webpage.

The WeTipCoins Wallet also enables you to log-in with your new identity on third party websites (via BitID | demo) and thus prove that you have paid or donated an amount. It does that without ever sending a password over the Internet — instead, only through signing a challenge using cryptography. Thus, in case a third-party server getting hacked, you won’t need to worry about your identity. It will still be save inside your wallet.

the community platform
All tips which get sent through the wallet get aggregated automatically on WeTipCoins.com. Users on this site can engage with the content: discuss, comment and chat with other users. It is similar to reddit but all votes (here also valuable coins) and entities are provably on-chain and impossible to forge. Through using this system you will build up reputation over time. Third party content aggregators, as well as ranking algorithms, can start competing using this data, e.g. to eliminate spam and deliver even more valuable recommendations similarly to Google’s Page-Rank.

WeTipCoins.com Community Platform and Content Aggregator
the new ‘awesome’ button
An ‘awesome’ is more than just a ‘like’. The ‘awesome’ button is similar to Facebook’s like button, but contains your new address/identity so that users of the wallet can instantly send you one-click tips on your site. Directly P2P and without intermediaries. And basically no fees, too.

“In an epic Quora thread, Facebook Engineer Andrew Bosworth delineates the history of the “Awesome”/”Like” button, what eventually turned out to be a way to connect Facebook users with the entire Internet — with the added bonus of rerouting all activity through the Facebook platform.” — TechCrunch
With the decentralized awesome-button, rerouting traffic is no longer needed. Did you know that every time you visit a website which contains a like button you get tracked by Facebook? This is done to create a model of your personality in order to sell your attention to companies through ads. But you do not need to be a product anymore.

the detrust
The WeTipCoins DeTrust (Decentralized Trust) creates a new intermediate bitcoin address for every website (actually, every URL) on the web, so that they can instantly accept coins, without the need to know anything about Bitcoin (in the first step). Through using multi-signature addresses for the websites no single entity of the DeTrust can access the funds on its own.

To be precise: the DeTrust is right now more like a simple Trust. I am chatting with several entities in the Bitcoin space to let them also have a key for the intermediate addresses, but before we put this live, we need some traction and we would also like to let the community vote on who gets a key. Maybe you want to recommend somebody trustworthy?

Solving America’s Top Fears
All this put together means: no more filling out forms for supporting or accessing digital content. No personal information will be leaked when we pay for digital content online. Our identity can no longer be stolen when some company’s servers get compromised. We can have as many pseudonymous identities as we want. And finally… We are able to monetize content in a new way, which is more direct and secure, more transparent and rewarding for our users. This leads directly to better content and less ads, too. It works on every website, in every country, worldwide — like the web.

If there is less incentive to break into third-party servers (simply because there is no more personal information to steal), less money will be spend on such hacks and the general security level of the web will increase.

Now, when you know that terrorists use credit card fraud to fund their operations, one could even say that the Awesome Internet Project helps America overcome its top four fears.

Join us and help spread the word. A wide adoption of a technology like this would help a lot in many ways. Tipping and micro-payments for digital content is the easiest way to start…

You can try it out right now: WeTipCoins.com and the WeTipCoins Wallet.

We are now live for a little over one week. One forgive us the silence in the past days. We were working heavily on our GRAND GIVEAWAY. We also did not release one extension more, but two. There were also almost 100 Facebook connects (to participate in the FB giveaway). But apparently Facebook is not the right channel to start. So we implemented also the Bitcointalk and Twitter giveaway. Further there is now a referral program for Facebook, too. Refer your friends to try out CoinAwesome and earn some free coins. We also started working on a naming system so that people do not need to remember hashes. User friendliness is very important to us. Therefore we added also another little feature to the wallet which reminds you to notify the site owner of your tip. You will see it only after you have 'awesomed' a website.

[ANN] GRAND GIVEAWAY

Right now there are 4 different ways to earn free coins at the giveaways. With each of them you can receive coins on a daily basis (for now). This reminds in a way to the 'basic income'. You can view this as an experiment, too.
I. Bitcointalk Giveaway ACTIVE NOW
Since it is not anymore allowed to have a designated giveaway threads here where people post their address to receive free coins, we implemented the signature giveaway. To participate change your signature to

'★ CoinAwesome.com ★the new way to pay with a smile'

and receive your forum activity back as coins. You can also use links if you can.

To participate there are 3 steps:
      1. change your signature to the above wording.
                2. Add your personal AWE address inside one of the fields inside your profile.
We recommend to use the "Other contact info" field.
      3. create an account at http://tips.coinawesome.com and post your Bitcointalk profile URL together with your AWE address at our Giveaway thread on tips.coinawesome.com
                    HERE: http://tips.coinawesome.com/topic/406/ann-grand-coinawesome-giveaway-launching-we-are-now-live-for-a-little-over-one-week-one-forgive-us-the-silence-in-the-past-days-we-were-working-heavily-on-our-grand-giveaway-we-also-did-not-release-one-extension-more-but-two-there-were-also-a

CoinAwesome is awesome! (or whatever else you like to tell us)

The first coins should arrive within 1 minute. From then we will check randomly every 16-32 hours (on average every day) if your signature still exists and send you more coins according to following formula:
      coins_you_receive = your_activity_count + 0.1 * your_activity_count * #new_posts_you_made_meanwhile

II. Twitter Giveaway ACTIVE NOW

DETAILS: http://community.coinawesome.com/topic/22/grand-twitter-giveaway-launching-now-get-your-twitter-reputation-back-as-coins
Also here you can receive every day new coins for posting a tweet.
   Steps:
      1. Follow @CoinAwesome
      2. Post a tweet with following key-items: '@coinawesome' + your_address + 'giveaway'
   This is it.
   The formula here is:
      coins_you_receive = square(your_klout_score) / 2
You can do this every 24h but do not try to cheat on us. In case you have more than 100 tweets per day or less than 100 in total, we will consider you as a bot and also not give you any coins.

III. Facebook Giveaway ACTIVE NOW
On giveaway.coinawesome.com you connect with Facebook after installation of the wallet extension and receive the number of friends you have back as coins. This is the easiest giveaway. You can also do this on a daily basis, every 24h.

IV. Facebook Giveaway Referral Program ACTIVE NOW
If you like CoinAwesome and want to support the free quality web and also let your friends know about it, you can use your personal referral link to earn 10% of the coins they receive at the FB giveaway. This is also recommended for blogs who write about CoinAwesome.
All you need to do is to put your personal address behind the base-urls like following: https://coinawesome/YOURAWEADDRESS or https://giveaway.coinawesome/YOURAWEADDRESS
The cookie will stay active for two weeks, so even if they come back later you will receive your referral award.
EXAMPLE: If your friend you refer has 1000 friends, he will receive 1000 coins and you will receive 100 coins.
Note: Facebook is a little off between the numbers of friends they return through the API compared to the numbers of friends you see through the web-interface. Unfortunately this is the way it is.

For all giveaways the maximum amount you can get is 5000 coins per day. Minimum is 50. We try to have more real community people and less bots or fake accounts.

TWO MORE BROWSER EXTENSIONS
CoinAwesome is the coin for the web. So we released two more browser extensions for Chrome/Chromium:
1. New-Tab-Extension
   https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/coinawesome-new-tab/kaecbglpoemneondlbnnimbgcjefhcen
The New-Tab-Extension displays content from tips.coinawesome.com is a nice way on every new tab. It is the easiest way to consume awesome content and probably to procrastinate, too. Check it out!
2. CoinAwesome Wallet Extension LIGHT with minimal permissions.
   https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gkpphghoboliipjninhblnkaibnnkdoo
In order to make the decentralized like button (awesome button) work on every website, the original extension needs to interact with the underlying website. Therefore extended permissions are required and the warning which Chrome/Chromium issues did let many people not start using it. To let people try out CoinAwesome's tipping-any-website feature we build this second extension with minimal permission requirements. It has full wallet functionallity and also supports tipping and sharing any website but the awesome-button can not work this way. As soon as our main wallet is trusted and reviewed by external parties we will shut down this extension.

[ANN] NAMING SYSTEM
We started working on our address naming system which will make it possible to register names in a decentralized way and map them to addresses, very similar to how Namecoin does it. This way CoinAwesome users will not need to remember hashes of public keys (addresses) but instead work with easily recognizable names. Names will be able to register in a few clicks inside the wallet extension. For us a naming system seems to be crucial for mainstream adoption. Expect launch of it in the next two weeks.

We just open sourced the browser wallet extension. In case you read the code, please post here that all is fine with it. https://github.com/FoundationAwesome/coinawesome-wallet

There is a big bounty for somebody who can port it to FF! Smiley

so how much of the premine do you plan on dumping?

You never state an amount, just that "some" of the coins will be used to fund development.

How about some clarity and transparency?

Thank you for asking this important question. We try to be as transparent as possible. We deeply believe in creating value for everybody with this coin through providing immediate use-cases for normal people with microdonations and (soon payments) inside the browser. Our main goal is to change how monetatization on the web works and create a more free, decentralized and censorship-free web, with less ads. Therefore the long-term success of our coin is most important to us. To achieve this we need to have a broad distribution among Bitcoin users but especially also among people who have never had before a crypto-currency at their fingertips. Simply because the latter group outnumbers the former by several orders of magnitude. We believe that free giveaways are the way to go where people with proven established online identities can claim free coins to try out the system and hopefully stick to it, because they see the benefits, which are many, compared to centralized systems. We plan to give away between 40 and 50% of all the coins (not counting bounties and crowdsale). Therefore we also plan to form partnerships with established content platforms and publishers which are waiting for new monetization models. This process will naturally take some time. Maybe 2 years. We simply do not know yet. Everything else would be a lie.

To archieve further transparency we embed a unique identifier into the transaction whenever somebody claimes free coins. In case of Facebook it is the FB-ID (a long number). A side-effect is that he can transfer his centralized identity to the decentralized Internet age.

One bad example or how we will NOT do it:
Stellar (Top 7 of CoinMarketCap)
https://www.stellar.org/stats/
Over 100 billion total Stellars
After over 5.3 Million FB connects
Only 1.6% given away
And almost 96% of all Stellar still hold by the "foundation"
Any value for normal users on the web? No.
The Stellar network is not even decentralized...

We think we can do way better!

Another bad Example: Ripple
(Number 2 on CoinMarketCap)
https://www.ripplelabs.com/xrp-distribution/
Again 100 billion coins
68% still belong to Ripple Labs (actually more*)
20% still belong to the founders (still?)
=> 88% not held by normal users
Dezentralization of the network questionable.
Is there a use for Ripple for normal users of the web? No. Banks love Ripple. Because they stay in power and can create more fiat on the Ripple network.

CoinAwesome is truly global honest money with immediate value.
It's microdonations and micropayments made for the web.

What makes Ripple and Stellar still interesting is that they do not have PoW. Thus they can have almost no or no inflation (unlike Bitcoin) and the price is kept fairly high because the supply is low.

Another bad example: Darkcoin
(Number 4 on CoinMarketCap)
http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/darkcoin/
Currently exist 5,224,297 DRK
On 19.1. DarkCoin was started with block-reward of 500 coins
"By exident" not even two days later 2014-01-21 at 02:39:01 already 5000 blocks were created and the block-reward was only 47 DRK.
This way the creators (and maybe also a very few other lucky ones) got 2,000,000 DRK. Yes, through mining. Instamining.

MINING?
Because some people say mining is the only way to distribute a coin in a fair way. It is not! Maybe for Bitcoin it was, but not anymore! Especially not, if you consider that there are people with access to thousands of cloud compute instances and have a monthly allowance of 100k+ USD to spend on them. Normal people will not benefit from mining, also not because they do not know how to compile a daemon on a remote server though a linux shell. Not possible. Further the electricity and hardware needs to be paid by the users of the network. Inflation makes their coins worth less and less over time compared to when there is no inflation (and everything else stays the same). This does not mean that PoW is a bad thing in general. We need a _few_ PoW-coins in our eco-system of cryptocurrencies and especially Bitcoin needs to stay. The more divers the PoWs, the better, because there can only be one coin per type of PoW in the long run.

For CoinAwesome we decided to "nest" its blockchain into other PoW blockchains for higher security. We will first start with Bitcoin as soon as the network stabilized at one block per minute. This way we can avoid most (theoretical) attacks on PoS-systems. So far we have not seen a successful attack on a PoS-chain anyway but be want to be completely safe.

CROWDSALE PRE-ANN - UPDATE: POSTPONED
Tomorrow we will announce the start and exact details of our initial crowd sale. It will be done in a very simple yet secure way. We will publish a BTC address. 24h rounds. People who send Bitcoin to this BTC address will receive CoinAwesome back to the corresponding AWE address after the round ends. To get access to them they will need to import the private key of their BTC-sending-address into the wallet extension. Afterwards they can spend them on tipping awesome content (hopefully) or transfer them to a paper-wallet or their QT-client. More details tomorrow.
Edit: Since the demand is fairly low we postpone the ANN for the crowdsale so we can set up some more giveaways.

Your idea certainly sounds awesome but there's one thing I'm not sure I understand, if there is no mining does that mean you're currently holding all 73 billion coins? If so, what guarantee do people have you will not dump and disappear as soon as the coin gets some traction? It's been done plenty of times before.
Thank you. We are a registered European company ("Bica Ltd.") and plan to open an office as soon as we can afford. No way we can dump and disappear. We are here for the long run. Expect impact.
