"Counterparty announced that its developers have successfully ported the Ethereum Project’s programming language over to the Counterparty platform, enabling users to save and execute Turing Complete Ethereum code on the Bitcoin blockchain. With this new development, Counterparty makes it possible to execute Ethereum smart contracts on the more secure Bitcoin blockchain."

How will this affect Ethereum? Will the Counterparty-Ethereum platform be slow? Can it be scalable? Anyone have any thoughts?

I suppose this article on coindesk provides a good enough answer to my question/concern.

Ethereum will dominate the smart contract business. Don´t worry.

Counterparty is not the only competitor, don't relax too much...

I think NXT has the same problem. Blocktime.
But if it comes to NXT vs Ethereum, then I am on the winning side anyway.  Cheesy

But smart contracts on the Bitcoin blockchain with 10 minute blocktime can possibly handle 1% of all possible features. That´s just nonsense imo.

Ethereum will dominate the smart contract business. Don´t worry.

Counterparty is not the only already working competitor, don't relax too much...

What already working competitors are there, and by already working I mean on main net (not test net)?

I know NXT has AT on test net, counterparty has smart contracts on test net, and ripple has codius (but I heard it's still being developed).

I have not heard of any coin with something on main net.

It won´t have any effect. People will realise that smart contracts with 10 minute blocktime is pointless. Even 1 minute is way to long. Vitalik posted that they aiming 2-3 seconds.  Counterparty panic buys will have a hard time when this gets clear. This is just a marketing gag.

Ethereum will dominate the smart contract business. Don´t worry.

well, think of it as ether investors fund xcp development, just like mastercoin.

The major problem that I have with msc and ether is they are more like company which can suffer from running out of fund, conflicts of interest and whatnot.

Bitcoin and counterparty are more of movement.

That simply means that the people that bought ether have thrown away their money.

Now ethereum can work on top of counterparty and tomorrow, if ethereum still exists and useful, will be implemented as a two way pegged bitcoin sidechain.

This could use an explanation for those of us that don't speak weird random letters and numbers Smiley
Thx
Nxt will release its own Turing-complete scripting language before Ethereum.
Turing-complete scritping language? Can you explain for non tecnical users

It means that the blockchain will be able to do things by itself.
It makes the blockchain alive.

It is the Saint-Grail for some, hell for some others.
It means that almost anything is possible, for better or for worse.

The Pandora box will be open soon.

LOL hardly, nice fud though

So, now that we "have" sidechains (or at least, the project of how to build them), ethereum could be built as a sidechain of Bitcoin?

Ethereum is designed to have its own blockchain but the day sidechain is available (if it is possible), there will be many Ethereum clones as sidechain.

In a sidechain you can't create new coins (not even with block mining reward), only transform coins from the main chain. In a 2-way pegged altcoin (like Ethereum or any other) you can.

Actually you can... https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2k3u97/we_are_bitcoin_sidechain_paper_authors_adam_back/clhnd0i

True, I was wrong in that.

But it doesn't make a lot of sense to send coins to a sidechain when you are going to have inflation while price is pegged to bitcoin. Holding this sidechain coin will give you less profit than holding bitcoin itself.

Well maybe the sidechain will have more than one native tokens in a way that makes sense. Or maybe a predictable dilution on the value of your sidechain coins might be treated as the cost of buying a certain sidechain functionality.

Afaict a clone of the ethereum protocol can be built as a sidechain of bitcoin. The official premined/IPO'd ethereum can't be pegged obviously...
