that's why you should have at least one outgoing transaction from your wallet
no matter to whom, just an outgoing transaction

just send some coins to your own address (in your new wallet) and pay the transaction fee and wait for 1440 confirm

How do you know when your on the right chain?

there is no really right chain. The one with smallest cumulative difficulty should win. When you only look at one chain, you can not know it.
You have only the base target as indication. You can see the base target of every block in blocks tab. If base target jumps above 1000% for more and more blocks you are probably on a fork.
