In fact there is a thought that built-in stake miner should be modified to provide findstake-like functionality for all users without exceptions. This point of view can be reconsidered but that can be a sufficient solution which won't require any protocol changes. Another way is forced recalculation of stake modifier, which seems good but impossible without protocol update.
Hi Balthazar:)
I know that the forced recalculation of stake modifier would require a protocol update, so the decision needs to be well thought. It could be implemented later if a hardfork becomes necessary for other, more urgent reasons.
Also, I do not want to interfere with your plans for Novacoin, just wanted to get sure that you are aware of the discussion, since I can not follow the Russian thread. I am not a programmer, and I don't know how much weight the Proof-of-work component has got in Novacoin in determining the best chain.
I would advise against providing a findstake-like functionality for all users, at least at this moment, because people should buy more Novacoin if they can't wait to mint a block. Coins are so cheap now. The functionality will only be needed when the price will be back up where it was.
