UTXOs in Action - The Road to Offline Staking - Part 1

This year Qtum is hard at work building offline staking and this blog will present a series covering the design, test, and deployment for offline staking. High-level design for offline staking is underway, and this series will start with a close look at how UTXOs are used in Qtum online staking - the current system. As the design for offline staking is finished, a future blog will reprise the UTXO’s important role in Qtum offline staking.

UTXOs (Unspent Transaction Outputs) are the fundamental unit of value on the blockchain and are carefully managed for staking in Qtum Proof of Stake. Large stakes are split into two UTXOs, smaller stakes can combine many UTXOs. Qtum offline staking will take full advantage of UTXOs.

Development Updates (February 24 - March 1)

Qtum Core

Qtum core updates normally consist of Qtum Improvement Proposals. These QIPs are generated by both our developers and the community and in some cases requests from enterprise users. Our developers evaluate the impact of each QIP and work on high priority QIPs. All bug fixes and feature enhancements that have been issued to the core project will be listed here.

Qtum Neutron & x86 Virtual Machine

Qtum Neutron is the infrastructure to support new virtual machines and the first will be the x86 virtual machine allowing smart contract development in C, Rust and other languages. The EVM will continue, but the x86 VM will allow easy creation of smart contracts using safe, well-known, mature languages and tools, and also provide a new state memory model using DeltaDB.

Qtum Explorer & Wallets

The Qtum Explorer is our blockchain explorer that is used for viewing transaction details on the Qtum blockchain. The primary blockchain explorer site is qtum.info. We frequently release updates to both explorer and the web wallet sites. Additionally, you’ll find information regarding the official Qtum Electrum wallet and support/feature updates to hardware wallets or other interesting services/products

Qtum.info Explorer

Qtum.Info, as the official blockchain browser of Qtum, mainly provides information such as network status, transaction records, data indicators of blockchain and visual charts. Qtum users, exchanges, wallets, mining pools, and other commonly used data service tools.

Blockchain Developer Acronyms: What Do They Mean?

The command-line interfaces (API, CLI, RPC) provide granular low-level control of all the commands for the Qtum node. The GUI wallet (Qtum-Qt) exposes most of every day commands through a graphical interface. But developers and stakers can use these command-line tools for everything else, and we see how.

You can do a Google search for suggestions about using Electrum with VPNs, which is a common issue with Electrum. Or turn off your VPN when using it.

I’m guessing that countries that filter or restrict the Internet could also cause problems for Electrum. If you live in such a country, you probably know about this.

Decentralized permissionless blockchains would have less problems with VPNs and other restrictions. But think about the Electrum lite wallet architecture connecting to a server somewhere. If traffic to that server is restricted it may not work so well.

Are you using a VPN? Electrum is sensitive to VPN settings and perhaps if there are national restrictions/filtering on the Internet. Some users report success using Tor with Electrum.

(I would send you a message if you allowed them from newbies)

I use VPN often , and why national restriction ? Is it possible ? I think the main theory behind creation of cryptocurrencies was get rid of borders and governments who want control your life

Hey Karto,

Linked below is a chart from 4Q 2019 showing Qtum uses. Besides these, some DApp/token projects pivoted or are still hibernating from the crypto winter. Probably the most active QRC20 token project currently is QC, a stable coin based on the Chinese Yuan https://www.quickcash.com/qc
