What OSX you running? What model Mac?
I'm on a 2012 Air with Mavericks and it isn't staking.
Could you clarify your method for staking, roughly how much you have in your wallet?
Model of the Mac has absolutely nothing to do with staking or not staking.
But there may be something with the OS X version, I have Mavericks too and it's not staking (after a week at least).
I've had many wallets that don't even start on Mavericks but they work on older versions (like Lion), for example the original WhiteCoin wallet did not start in this.
The model does have an effect on how the OS performs - an example is my old 2010 MacPro - there's a number of software bugs with Mavericks that didn't manifest on my Macbook Air or Mac mini (namely Cinema 4D, colour sever sync and Adobe CS6 Illustrator / InDesign giving various SIGBUS errors - also quicklook 100% CPU error only occurred on the Air) - all of which had clean OSX installations with the same software.
That being said, I agree that Mavericks is most likely be the cause. I'm working on creating a second OSX installation for Mountain Lion on my Air to test this theory (currently dual boots to Linux partition and Windows through parallels).
