If the web server is still up - and my limited testing suggests this may be the case - it is most likely still possible to access the website by editing the hosts file on your local computer, which will bypass DNS. Anyone with a long lived (or broken) DNS cache will also be able to continue accessing the website. Perhaps that's how the airdrop claims process has been able to continue..... or maybe it's just a bot that doesn't care about DNS....

yes, hosts file working as bypass DNS, only airdrop counter and forum.auroracoin.org for 104.28.4.68 are broken

If you stuff a "Host: www.auroracoin.org" directive into a HTTP request to the IP 104.28.4.68 you get back the auroracoin site. I'm not sure whether this means the web server is still active, or it's just cloudflare caching it.

Looks like auroracoin.org is registered under eNom, or one of its resellers. Does anyone know if it's possible to renew a domain via them, without needing to be logged in as the original registrant? (ie - ANYONE can renew the domain). Did a quick web search but couldn't find anything.

edit: the reseller is namecheap.

edit 2: Speaking in namecheap live chat, they can contact the registrant, and there's no objections within 24 hours they will allow a third party to renew the domain. They've also recommended to renew with WhoisGuard, otherwise the original registrant's details will be revealed, but the catch is that also may trigger ICANN contact validation, which could result in suspension of the domain 15 days later. So better to pay the extra $2.88 to continue WhoisGuard and avoid ICANN validation.

So... does anyone have a namecheap account? It will cost $14.36 to renew the domain and WhoisGuard.
I just had a chat with namecheap and the rep I got said 'no can do'. Have to wait 80 days for the domain to be available.
I suspect the agent you spoke with may have had more initiative than usual. Maybe I'll try again later.

The domain was renewed for a year on December 19: http://who.is/whois/auroracoin.org

Who renew this domain? Previous owner?
I hope it is he and  last stage airdrop has been continued...

See above. It has not actually been renewed by the registrant, it is just temporarily "owned" by the registrar. That's why the website shows a message saying the domain is expired, rather than Auroracoin content.

Auroracoin Community Takes a Stand

As of December 4th a new interactive forum for the Aurora community is now live @ http://auroraspjall.is/ and can be accessed via the unofficial website www.auroracoin.io

Speculation is rampant after the official auroracoin.org website expired on December 21st 2014 effectively ending the airdrop two months prematurely.

The fact that claims are still being made according the block explorer leaves more questions to be answered by the original developer of the coin who has been AWOL for months.

Such a lack of leadership only serves to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt about the future of the currency and the administration of auroraspjall hope to fill the vacuum or at least provide a platform for people to do so themselves…

While a lack of central leadership has been a point of criticism for many observers of the space, the decentralised nature of crypto currency lends itself well to a truly democratic form of governance and regulation that the developer behind Auroracoin possibly envisioned before he let the website expire.

As for the remaining coins that sit unclaimed and the 1 million auroracoin that the developer has left for further development you can view those balances here https://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-auroracoin-addresses.html.

I commend you for taking a stand, Baldur II.

This is all nice and dandy, but we have _one_ serious problem that cannot be solved in a decentralized nature as you suggest: the premine.

If it isn't destroyed, quite frankly the coin loses most of its remaining potential,... probably all of it.

Auroracoin has been removed from Poloniex however you can still withdraw coins from the exchange and you are advised to do so ASAP.

That would be the registrar's grace period. If a domain is not renewed by a customer it is taken over by the registrar for a short period. It looks like it has been renewed for an extra year, but this won't stick.

It does need to be renewed by someone, and soon.

Website is up at auroracoin.io

However this doesn't given access to the airdrop.

How the f..k is the airdrop still in progress?

http://blockexplorer.auroracoin.eu/tx/04c6e0874a46541b145167848249c7ee50a053820f3c5acc9d3643b1f4623e76

Was the airdrop done directly from auroracoin.org? Is the server still up? What was its IP-Address? Does it have an alternative name?

Was wondering the same.

Done all the digging I could and it all ends at Cloudflare and cloud flare doesn't allow direct IP access. I assume it's still up and running but I don't know if it has another access to it. Like from an alternate domain.

I was backtracking the distribution address that are in the blockexplorer you linked. They are all marked as "Not yet redeemed". What does "Not yet redeemed" mean? This is common to all the transactions that is paying out 636 since 17th of december.

Is there any chance that these claims have been on hold in a queue? I remember when I claimed my coins, I got a message that the transaction will go into a queue and they were not delivered right away?

    • Renew the domain
    • Hand over the domain to the group
    • Give the group a link to the claim site that we can use from a new website we are making
    • burn the rest of the premine.

I agree with these points. However the first two are far less important then the last 2.

The premine needs to be destroyed... on schedule or earlier.

Yes I completely agree. The premine being destroyed is the single most important thing that needs to happen.[/list]

      I agree with Molecular

      • get the auroracoin.org up and running and continue with the distribution.
      • the project has to end with a provable burning of the rest of the premine.
