What is the reason for doing a gradual decrease?

Perhaps is a form of marketing and also a bonus for the early birds, many ICOs use this process and like the saying goes, the earlier the better, it will boost the rush syndrome, as many will love to enjoy the bonus package
I can see that this would push the end-date to the first weeks, but if I were to find out about thep roject in Week 4 and see I would only get 2% bonus instead of 6 or 8%, it would demotivate me, sounds to me this is an inbetween choice of trying to finalize the sale asap and ''in-case we dont reach hardcap'' put end date as far as possible
There is the pre-sale part which occurs before the main-sale, as far as I know the discount is usually provided during the pre-sale, but I see it more often happening in main-sale as well but with gradual decrease, I suppose those who invest early on take a higher risk than when you invest when you see that there is already 90% sold
