When we are saying technical writer, what do we mean? Will that writer delve into source code details? If yes, that requires reading the code and understanding it, which takes the difficulty up enormously compared to just writing a wiki with "technical info" (not source-code related).

4400$ to write a wiki Huh

Why not have a competition in the community he who writes the best wiki wins 100 dash or something like that  Smiley

There could be a proposal for a bounty fund that can fund these kinds of competitions. lets say 100 dash per month goes to the fund and everytime we need some technical writing or anything that our community members can (and have the passion)to do we could make a competition for the set bounty.

Edit: Did make a PreProposal over at dash.org

I agree.   Writing is a talent that should be offered to the community.  It can also be split up into parts with different requirements.  Graphs, Flowcharts, Standard Layout, and Writing.

Icebucket, you are on the right track with Bounties.   The Public Dash has basically been able to get a few things done from donations using this approach.  I will list a few successful activities.

  • Exodus Wallet skin - 10 Dash went to the winner.  We had three very cool designs.  Check out the wallet released as a 1.0 today.  https://www.exodus.io/
  • Articles in Dashpaymazine.com are all community efforts.  Most of the personally written articles were better than the paid articles from Vanbex.
  • Mining Channel - We helped many of the PinIdea customers fix miners. It is also a great way to optimize and try different settings.  This real time discussion is helpful when solving problems.
  • Dashstore - We started talks to create a dashstore to sell shirts and merchandise.
  • Iphone wallet on App store - current bounty is 300 Dash - this is all from pledges.  We have 2 developers discussion how to make a wallet that might get accepted.  (Yes they are talking with Quantum Explorer, and waiting on existing wallet gets approved/rejected)
  • 2FA - Again we had a user looking into how to make this work.

We also created the site http://www.dashnation.com/gigs/ to list current bounties.

These are discussions happening on Slack - this doesn't happen on the forums because it isn't real time.  We have asked for a small amount of funding from this proposal to expand the actions that can help Dash:

I agree that a lot of stuff should be offered to the community, and incentives for further community participation are a good thing; this is why I've voted in favour of the slack-tipbot proposal.

One thing I will say is that just because the Evo documentation is looking for dedicated funding doesn't mean that sufficiently qualified community members can't bid for the work...

Bottom line is that both proposals have a lot of merit and should be passed.

Walter

So if the HF didn't solve the problem, the question is why ETH still so high?

I understand where you're coming from - $4k isn't small change for many community members i'm sure - but I think we need to put things into perspective a little... Dash has the market cap of a fairly substantial business, currently at $62million, it's by no means the largest in crypto(!) but by all common business metrics a business with a market cap of $62million would have a similar level of turnover, say $60m, and an average of over 700 full time employees supporting the business. Dash in contrast has a fraction of the number of employees, however, it does have a constant (and growing) source of revenue in the form of the blockchain funding of around $800,000 a year. So what does $800k a year buy Dash currently? https://www.dash.org/team/

i think that a team like that is worth that alone, never mind everything else that's getting funded! Like the dash.org domain, adoption into the Lamassu ATM and the Dash N' Drink instant soda machine, along with funding many public events.

And if they continue to grow this project and add value to the project then this $850,000 a year funding could very quickly grow to $2m-$4m...

So I ask this question... Can we expect to further develop and grow the Dash product/solution/business/ecosystem by relying on the goodwill and passion of the community alone? Furthermore, should we as 'owners' (of the currency) expect passionate, dedicated and talented individuals to provide free/cheap labour to the detriment of themselves and benefit of us 'owners' without themselves being rewarded fairly?

The bottom line is that we're not some small community interest group anymore, we're in business! And businesses need talented individuals to continue to grow and prosper. We're not going to retain and acquire more talented individuals by offering one-off bounties on really important stuff like documenting business processes and the whole Dash ecosystem. It's really easy to try and break down the tasks that need to be undertaken and commoditize them, but the reality is that a lot of the work that is required to deliver on the Dash key milestones is highly skilled and specialist.

If Dash did reach a market cap of around $500million then the annual funding budget will be $9million... Does $4,400 still sound like a waste of money to properly document the whole evolution platform?

Personally, I think it's good value.  Smiley

Well said Walter. I think this proposal is extremely important as just the other day I had Charles Hoskinson ask me to link him to Dash's whitepaper as he wanted to explore its governance system. It wasn't the best look when I had to explain that our white paper is outdated and that you will just have to watch these videos and read this little documentation which is not apart of our official whitepaper.

Funding things like this allows more developers to come in and explore Dash's technical aspects. More developers mean more innovation and more usability for our currency.

I think that this price is extremely reasonable for such an important task.

I'm assuming that it's going to be outside professionals getting paid to do this, a la much of the other evo work that has been contracted out. I don't think the team is going to be getting this money, though I suppose I could be wrong.
That is correct... this will be contracted to a professional technical writer. Core team members will not be paid from these funds.

So if the HF didn't solve the problem, the question is why ETH still so high?

The answer to that is in the low volume.

ETH is shedding its 'skin' (i.e. ETC). All the volume is in the 'skin'.

Each Ether holder after the fork had equal amounts of ETC and ETH, so most are selling the one that they think is worth least - i.e. ETC and thats where all the volume is.

HOWEVER:

Lots of non-ETH holders think the 'skin' is worth more than than ETH-Fork. So they are buying it and the price has stabilised at a corresponding equilibrium. The question is, what will happen when the exchange is complete. i.e. when the supply of ETC has run out. Only then will we start to see a possible impact on the ETH valuation because only then will it then have an exposure to the ETH/ETC market as a genuinelly distinct asset.

IMO an asset that has been hardforked in this way - for the express purpose of reversing history, particularly when that history was totally legitimate - has no chance of surviving. We already saw that with Vericoin, but it took 6 months for Vericoin to finalise its demise conclusively. It could take ETH the same amount of time.

Thanks for this point of view, good explanation, so maybe I'm too early to short it =) lol

BTC-E ETH Etc drama https://btc-e.com/news/230

My popcorn bill will be pricy

Umm I wounder if eth will suffer from this. Huh

i think it will just cause irritation to their own traders and encourage those trading in ETC and / or ETH to move to other exchanges

All my ETH was local to me since the release, after the DOA attack I dumped it all but then repurchased later.   I got lazy and this was the only time I held coins on BTCe.    While I didn't lose any of my coins,  I did lose out on just dumping all the ETC and possibly recoup much of the value that was lost when ETH dropped in value.

Not the end of the world, but missed out on thousands of dollars by holding them on BTCe.    Just plain silly of me after all this time, I should have known better.

Sorry to hear this. I had a high opinion of BTC-e until today.  But I would also put heavy blame on the Ethereum developers. The devs just assumed that the original unforked chain would become worthless and die, which was complete hubris because they had to know that with only 5% of ETH voting for the fork, they did not really have overwhelming consensus. Oh let us enumerate the ways they fucked this whole thing up.
1. They failed to disable the forked ETH DAO, so that anyone who sends ETH to the DAO has no recourse. Someone has already accidentally lost $500k of ETH to the forked DAO, and that ETH has been drained! Amazing, right? The DAO attacker strikes again. So the same bug that caused them to hard fork is still there!
2. They failed to change the protocol version so that the forked ETH would not listen to ETC transactions and vice-versa. Both chains are still entangled and are subject to replay attacks, which is EXACTLY how BTC-e lost their ETC.
3. ETH will need to hard fork again to disable replay attacks. The ETC team aren't budging on this because ETH forked away from Classic. I bought more popcorn for this.

Anyway, after dabbling in ETH and ETC I'm just going to park the funds in another DASH masternode and some MaidSafe (I loaded up their software for the first time last night. Testnet 7 is the real deal. I can confirm MAID is rigged to explode).
