It has just dawned on me that with X11 power requirements so low, I can, with a little PSU juggling, consolidate my 11 270s and 1 6870 into two rigs instead of the three they are currently distributed across, leaving me with a free 7 PCIe slot MSI mobo and a 750W Corsair CX to power, for example, 7 cute little 750Ti cards.

Buy 7 750 Tis or just buy £700 DRK?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the miner only works for AMD cards at the moment.

You are right, as ten seconds of Googling revealed to me after I made that post! Ah well, 2nd hand 280s maybe. I have an extra kW of solar power to use up!  Grin

All right, for all those who are willing to set up a masternode.
THIS IS NOT TRIVIAL.
You, at least, need:
  • To have some basic knowledge of Unix administration (I guess it's not available for windows, right?).
  • To understand how network and firewalls work.
  • To have experience in information security (configure and protect your host, do regular updates, general best practices and IT hygiene).
I will set up masternode myself in the nearesst couple of days and will put up a detailed guide applying all best practices I know. I guess the community will also add something. Beware, though, that you not only risk your own money (1000 DRK), but also put the network to the risk in case your masternode is compromised.
Couple of Questions.

1.  Can you have 2 or 3 pcs behind a single cable modem and single router each as a masternode or would it just see the ipaddress of the cable modem and see that as a single ip and thus only 1 node?
2.  Anyone in Texas want to help me setup a masternode since I'm a linux noob?
3.  Any chance of a putting a node on windows server 2008 or windows 8.1?
4.  Would you want to be sure to put your node on a completely separate subrouter from your miners if you are using the same internet connection?  Node behind one router and miners behind a 2nd router?

1. Only 1 PC would be able to be a masternode. Unless you order additional IP addresses from your ISP.

3. I would keep away from windows as it's inherently less secure than *nix.
4. Not necessarily.

Goddammit...  Huh

No need for powered risers anymore either... doubt my 270s are pulling more than 75W each, in fact looking at the power readings they can't be, but even if they were the extra 25W PCIe riser capacity should be ample...

edit: Bollocks, cudaminer doesn't yet support X11. Hmm, used 280s are going dirt cheap...  Cool

This can't be emphasized enough, the type of questions people are asking about setting one up are terrifying.

can someone just make a 2 minute "how-to" youtube video?  thanks! Wink

- Get a machine with a static ip
- Setup some ddos protection
- Setup firewall rules to block any ports that are not needed
- Open port 9999
- Download the beta daemon of darkcoin
- Use ./darkcoind getaccountaddress 0 to get an address on that daemon

How da fk do i do this lol

https://www.darkcointalk.org/threads/how-to-set-up-ec2-t1-micro-ubuntu-for-masternode-part-1-3.240/

How much would that cost per month?

A couple of Darkcoin clones (without the DarkSend feature) launching in the next few days -

* Quebec coin - x11 and DGW. Big distribution to people in Canadian Quebec, but given away over 10 years!
* CATiCoin - pretty much like Quebec coin, but distribution is to those that want Catalonia to be independent of Spain, so they want their own currency.
* Emirates Coin - they think there are so many foreign workers in UAE that there is a place for the coin as a cheap money transfer, plus use internally

I just updated the media release I wrote a while ago. Here it is: http://pastebin.com/VaRif5rK
Happy for any suggestions. Could we get this out after Easter?
I think we should strongly consider using PRWeb for the press releases. Much easier to get it out there than sending it to individual websites (although we should do that too).
http://www.prweb.com/
I've used prweb before, I asked mannie for a couple changes then I think it's ready to go. Does anyone have an account with prweb? I know otherwise we'll end up paying $120+ (I forget the exact amount they charge). I think this would be a good use of the bounty money

When ALL updates are done and this is ready for final, final release then I suggest we get some dual Mandarin/English speakers on board who will go to all the Chinese bitcoin sites and let everyone know about this product.  Getting the Chinese to fall in love and begin using Darkcoin is the single most important move to greatly increasing the real demand to buy this coin.  This should also be coordinated with a successful BTC38 listing.
My 2 cents.

This is a step that should be implemented.

One of my my favorite things about DRK? Nobody is pumping it!!! Cheezy pump schemes work for a lot of coins, but is not yet necessary for DRK. It will spread itself based on its merits alone, so whats the rush?

The coins whole value is, so far, based largely on fundamentals, and, of course, speculation. Why inflate the price now? Evan is gonna program the shit out this coin, so f'ing hard! Let the man work.

In fact, even when its ready to go, we probably wont need to pump it. People in the crypto world will want to write about it anyhow, if it works.

Small not that everyone in the crypto world should be aware of. In the real world of investing...

returns of 15% per YEAR are considered amazing. The market average is ~8%. Things take years, or decades to accrue value. No need to "flip" your investment in the next few months.

I've asked it before and will ask again - what's the deal with Dark? Why is it that any time it seems to be getting traction price-wise toward 20, it gets sold right back under 20? It's looks like a conspiracy to keep the price suppressed.

As with everything especially alt coins some people just want to trade for quick profits. When Darkcoin makes its real move it will leave many behind. No big thing though it's good for distribution and late comers always have a chance to get in. Many people just want to ride the next pump, they don't care what coin it is. I'm done playing that game. I choose to hold onto Darkcoin with a death grip because I've decided that it's one of the very few alts worth having at this point.

But the alt community will keep throwing money at the next Edgecoin. It's sad. Altcoin community will throw btc at every new fad get rich quick scheme. It's just the way it is.

I made money trading BC but totally missed the move past 10000. I was watching in disbelief from the sidelines. But thats because I wasn't holding for the long term. Very few people are holding alts long term. I will not be on the sidelines for Drk.

#1. Yeah, I legitimately think someone is manipulating the price to keep it low. Sometimes they're no so subtle about it. You gotta bob and weave. However, its  fine by me, for reasons that should be OBVIOUS ;-)

#2. Not sad at ALL. Imagine if people made good decisions about which coins to buy, and why. That would be terrible for us... for reasons that should be OBVIOUS ;-)

Well, thank you all those who are already cashing out! The rest of us who need cheap coins need this downward pressure on DRK. If it wasn't for your impatience who knows where DRK would end up today. F'ing idiots, sorry, I mean geniuses.

Yes! Thank you!  Cool
