I think more useful would be the ability to also send small, twitter-sized messages instead of just transactions via darksend. Imagine that you could combine a transaction with a message or something like that. Hash the characters together and send it like a transaction, and all of a sudden, you have a really well encrypted, anonymous message system that overlays on an existing network.

This compromises anonymity (unless the message is utterly generic, in which case there's no reason to send it). You could argue that it's one person voluntarily compromising his/her own anonymity but because of the way DarkSend works, they're chipping away at the anonymity of everyone else involved in the mixing.

What would you guys think of doing a fundraiser for the Electronic Frontier Foundation in DRK?

Marketing, support a good cause, and promote DRK as privacy centric in a good way.

So I just had a random idea and I wanted to see if there's any interest in me developing this (after DarkSend of course).

I think it would be really neat and much more friendly if you could type something like "Evan" in the Pay To field. Bitcoin/Darkcoin addresses are just really long and impossible to remember, it's even harder to show a Bitcoin address in a video or picture without a QR Code.

The solution? Named Addresses

When mining, the miner who successfully mines the block could "name" a darkcoin address. It would be permanently added to the block chain as an alias of that darkcoin address. The names could be up to 8-20 characters and would be paired with the 160 bit address. Upon loading the blockchain the client would form a cache of all of these and then they could be used in place of the full addresses.

It's decentralized, permanent and tamper proof.

The block explorer could even show the alias instead of the address when it had it available, so in a DarkSend you could tell that "Evan" paid someone, but you would have no idea who.

How do you get a name?

This could be an opportunity for the pool operators to make extra cash. They would take orders for name/address pairs and tell the daemon which ones to add to the blockchain next. The blockchain could only support 1 of these per block, so there could be a premium for adding them. Eventually I could see a centralized market where you buy a spot in the queue to get a name.

Thoughts?

I think this is an awesome usability feature, but not so relevant to the spread and positioning of Darkcoin at its current and near-term stage.
Everyone agrees here that the major obstacle that drk faces now is getting exposure to the greater population. I see this achieved either by marketing [as suggested by many] or by begin trading in a prominent exchange with loads of users and cash [as voted by many here in poles].

In regards to marketing, I believe we need to start sending emails to every blogger out there.
In regards to trading, we were very unfortunate to be traded on 2 exchanges that got hacked this month. This impacts users' confidence and willingness to transfer coins into an exchange and buy drk.
Right now, this point-of-failure called "an exchange" is imho our weakest link. Our daily volume is shrinking and no big exchange is pushing the coin.
i've heard NXT users speak about p2p trading, where you don't need an exchange any more and your coins are safe in your own wallet. If this is not a development that would take months, perhaps this could be our next feature, and by doing so, we leap above the exchange factor.
In any case, I believe we should be getting out of Beta real soon and stating to the world - "It works. It's trustworthy. It's anonymous."

I think more useful would be the ability to also send small, twitter-sized messages instead of just transactions via darksend. Imagine that you could combine a transaction with a message or something like that. @camo

I will get it up and running if you are willing to get on IRC. I feel that it is detracting the main conversation of this thread. I said a page ago that I got the most difficult combo up and running, so this is not a big deal. Just wanted this thread to discuss Darkcoin related topics and the huge news from today which is SPECTACULAR imo but is getting buried in other sub-discussions.

Hey guys I'm trying to help create a Darkcoin community so we aren't all just stuck in this one little thread Cheesy

Anyway I'm giving away 100 DRK come join me https://www.darkcointalk.org/threads/100-drk-giveaway.12/

Hey, that's a great initiative, I've made a reddit post about it http://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/1zy9pk/theres_a_100_darkcoin_giveaway_on_darkcointalkorg/

You know, I was just coming back to say how nice it is to have an entire forum just for the coin so that all the subjects that are spread all over this thread here can be organized for easy searching.  I mean, so many people are asking the same questions over and over, and they've been answered, but get lost in the pages and are not really searchable (forum search ability everywhere is abysmal)

Anyway, this looks really great!  Lets all move over!

+1

I always feel like this forum moves hellishly fast! I was here last night, and it has taken me about an hour just to read through everything.

I suppose it's a tribute to how interesting everyone is on here ... Smiley

You might want to list it here: https://www.darkcointalk.org/forums/marketplace.9/

Also how much?

Not even sure what it's worth. Make me an offer. There's no functional linux distro/driver combo out there so I have no use for it.

dose it run in windows?

I don't see why not. I don't have Windows and I'm not getting it. I used to run Eve Online through Wine while simultaneously mining LTC with it, but none of the newer software/drivers for Linux work so I can't do a thing with it. It's a brick to me.

something seems to be wrong with cryptsy - at least that's what I'm seeing. I'm trying to fill a specific buy order but it's stuck in open orders, even if there is a buyer and seller agreeing on the same price. Is anyone else seeing this?

Cryptsy is having some "issues" for me too, primarily enormous lag.

You "cryptoanarchists" are over doing it with wantinbg everything to be open soucre, I agree that Darkcoin should be Closed Source until it has a huge user base like Bitcoin does, then you can open source, if the devs open source Darkxoin before that, this coin will become.overlooked and useless as others mimic Darksend.

I agree somewhat, some things can't be truly transparent and not get exploited. I can't even code and over that last couple of days have considered learning enough to make a darkcoin clone till I read this thread properly and found out about it's closed source nature.

A good compromise would be a full audit from greg maxwell and possibly some other trusted contributors to the original idea.

The plan is to open source it, just not while it is in development.

It will go true the plummet after that.

I doubt it. Bitcoin was cloned yet it hasn't plummeted. LTC sprung a thousand clones, so what? Even quark leads its quark clones.

Why I couldn't open the pool 'http://pool.darkcoin.io/index.php'? I still have some coins in it. Huh

It's moving to a new server, adn then it's not, and then it's inaccessible... been that way for a few days...

It was never not moving to a new server. It was moving, then it moved, now it's there.

I'll be speaking at the Cryptocurrency Convention on Apr 9th in NewYork, detailing how DarkSend works and promoting DarkCoin. If anyone will be in NewYork at that time I'd love to meet you!

http://cryptocurrencyconvention.com/

*My details should be up on the site soon

THIS is the type of "marketing" this coin needs.

Edu, can you talk any about what type of testing (beyond this community doing some DS transactions) you are doing? It's been mentioned before to try to let some "white-hat" types take a hammer to it... anything like that? To me, i'd like some sort of 3rd party endorsement on the anonymous transactions.

There were a few people that came into the forums and said that it wasn't anonymous and could break it, I'll reach out to them and see if they're up for taking a look at it.

This would be great to have for marketing purposes.

Also, I was thinking you could institute a 2% fee for your mining pool that would go towards bounties for the DarkCoin Foundation. This would give miners a chance to contribute to the growth and prosperity of the coin.

What do they think they can "break"?  It's in open beta, I can't see how they can figure out who sent what to whom?  Is anyone trying the Beta?  I have, but I suspect only a handful of people have been willing to?

I guess if Eduffield needed more people on it, he'd have said so. Then again, I remember reading some family thing came up, so I suspect he's been away the last 2 days or so.

But I'm telling your, it's just talk.

I don't think it's just a matter of looking at it. Maybe they can send data over the network which forces the code to reveal the sender, stuff like that.

We are now approaching the 10GH/s network mark. Seems as though a lot of people are finally realising the potential of this coin  Smiley

Except the value is going down...

Yup, currently top scrypts deliver approximately 20% more value, which is too far from equilibrium to sustain itself. Something's gonna change. Personally, I'm too lazy do anything but mine DRK and buy DRK. Constantly paying attention to profitability takes up too much attention.

On the another note, Eduffield are you still planning to attend the New York conference?   Didn't quite get a clear picture on what your intention was due to some changes.

No, I was struggling to figure out how to do that with some family stuff that came up. Plus they downsized it to a couple hundred seats and it was really expensive to get there and the tickets are really expensive ($200) so I'm not sure how much impact it would have actually have had. I'd much rather speak at another conference, maybe one in Cali.

Does anyone have a functioning Linux distro with a functioning AMD driver? Or am I the only one who didn't get the memo that there is no such thing?

I just don't fuckin' believe it... I used to run Eve Online with Wine on 13.04 with a beta 13.3 AMD driver while simultaneously mining LTC in the middle of Summer with no A/C and it was flawless... Now, absolutely nothing works even using the exact same stuff...

I may give up Linux and AMD products, both. I need something that actually works. Who wants to buy this 7970? I've got no use for it.
