Cool, finally a scientific usefull coin not aiming for profit.

What's wrong with profit?  I'm sure that's why most miners (including myself) are mining this.

if my CPU is going to burn because of this coin.......
i will be really mad !

Mine are already on fire!

Let's get to 35.5!

Always using one less CPU thread or core is a very good idea and in general never mine using a laptop. Use cloud servers instead.

Cool, finally a scientific usefull coin not aiming for profit.

Thats the point. Finding prime gaps is a lot more useful than primecoin's results for example.

Indeed. Everyone set their miners running and lets find some new prime gaps. Difficulty up towards 35+ should start to churn up some new records.

Easy instruction above.  Grin

If i understood correctly we should start seeing records from diff 27 ! After 35.5 every block will be a record Smiley

In Gapcoin,
- what happens to the reward when difficulty gets down?
- why is it easier to create a pool in Gapcoin than in Primecoin?

I've read http://www.gapcoin.org/, but did not get my answers

Thanks

This is from peercoin/primecoin forum.

So j0nn9 what are the answers? I know that reward also gets down but what about the second question?

When mining Primecoin, you can easily betray the pool by modifying your miner to search only for smaller prime chains.
With Gapcoin, this is not possible.

In detail:

When you searching for prime chains, you use a sieve for filtering prime candidates.
If you search for a 10 chain, you sieve 10 times and eliminate all prime chain candidates that are smaller than 10.
The primecoin pool then for example credits you for submitted 10-chain candidates that are only 7,8 or 9-chains.

If you now sieve only 7 times, you will get a lot more 7-chain candidates.
Not only is your calculating effort less, you will also find 7-chains that would not have been 10 chain candidates.
The important point is, your chance of finding 10 chains drops while your chances of finding 7 chains rises.

Pool operators have to implement something to handle such "betrayers".
With Gapcoin you don't have this additional effort.

Its not only the records that are useful!

Cloud based Linux Guide for CPU mining Gapcoin at: http://gap.nonce-pool.com/ - Ubuntu x64 - 14.04 LTS - Recommended.

Sign-up with cloud based Linux server hosting, such as Digital Ocean, VULTR or RunAbove and set-up your new servers.

To login to your cloud server you need to download putty.exe (for windows) - http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

Simply double click on putty.exe to start PuTTY and enter your server's IP address and click on OK to logon

When clicking on OK you may be presented with a server authentication warning screen. Just click on (or type) Yes to continue.

Now you need to enter your username and password. Login as: root and with your password.

Note that when you type your password the command prompt probably won't move along - just continue to type and press the enter key to login.

N.B. On a Linux based OS open a new terminal by pressing CTRL + ALT + T and at the command prompt type: ssh root@YOUR SERVERS IP ADDRESS

Rev. 3 EDIT:

----- COPY and PASTE each section / line of TEXT below individually into the Terminal -----

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Set-up a SWAP file due to low RAM on some instances:

Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=64M count=16

Code:
sudo mkswap /swapfile

Code:
sudo swapon /swapfile

Code:
sudo apt-get install p7zip-full

wget github.com/gapcoin/GapMiner/releases/download/gapminer-noncepool-linux-rev2/gapminer-noncepool-rev2.zip

Code:
wget github.com/gapcoin/GapMiner/releases/download/rev3/gapminer-linux-rev3.zip

7z x gapminer-noncepool-rev2.zip

Code:
7z x gapminer-linux-rev3.zip

Code:
sudo apt-get install screen

Code:
screen

In screen mode hit the Space Bar twice to return to the command prompt.

gapminer-noncepool/64/gapminer -o http://mine3.gap.nonce-pool.com -p 4200 -u YOURusername.YOURworker -x x --retries -1 -t NUMBER OF CPU THREADS

Code:
64/gapminer -o http://mine3.gap.nonce-pool.com -p 4200 -u YOURusername.YOURworker -x x --retries -1 -t NUMBER OF CPU THREADS

----- COPY and PASTE each section / line of TEXT above individually into the Terminal -----

and press the Enter key to start mining. DONE !

N.B. You can use (press and hold) CTRL + A + D to get out of the screen session. Then type exit and press enter to close the terminal, although continue mining Gapcoin.

If you log back in to the terminal type: screen -r and enter to check that your still mining Gapcoin.

- Digital Ocean $10 with promo code SSD2014 or OMGSSD10 - VULTR $5 free when you register and an additional $5 if you use Bitcoin. See: https://www.vultr.com/news/45/Now-Accepting-Bitcoin!

Thanks!

Can I get a little help setting up a miner on linux? I keep getting "cannot execute binary file: Exec format error"

If anyone can PM me I'd appreciate it.

Have you tried compiling from source?

Take a look at the OP - there is a cloud mining guide there.  Now this is meant to set up the wallet, not the miner - but you could simply change the download link and file names.  I'm a total linux noob, but I was able to set up 5 cloud servers using this as a template.

Looks like GAP has been added to coin-swap.net! https://coin-swap.net/market/GAP/BTC

I've sent 1GAP, 10 blocks ago, and its nowhere to be seen on the site.

EDIT: Its pending now, good.
