Notice there are two addresses when you are in wallet. If you hit the "Receive" button the QR code says at the top either:

"Request GEMS using this QR code"

or

"Request BTC using this QR code"

depending on if you are looking at your GEMS balance or your BTC balance.

While they are both "bitcoin" addresses make sure you use the correct address for the correct coin. If you send GEMS to the BTC address the wallet won't see those GEMS.

DOH! I just realized you are talking about the counterwallet. Yea, any of those addresses are fine for BTC and/or GEMS. I thought you were talking about the GetGems wallet.

No it can be sent outside the app, like counterwallet or an exchange or anywhere else gemz is accepted.

No you can't. A counterwallet passphrase will not work in GetGems and Vice versa

Since 18 Jun 2015 passphrase uses the "default" layout mentioned in the BIP32 spec. (this one time change was needed because counterparty passphrase isn't using the default key words to generate their passphrase thus isn't compatible with other apps in the bitcoin ecosystem): http://getgems.ghost.io/2015/06/18/getgems-developer-update-12/

What the above means is:
(1) https://counterwallet.coindaddy.io/ can be used for gems on-chain.
(1) GetGems Passphrase is only relevant to your bitcoin. Passphrase can be used in https://web.hivewallet.com/ and https://multibit.org/ to recover bitcoins.
(2) Your Gems inside the app are off-chain. You are able to recover them by login to GetGems app with your phone number. [We are adding support for email authentication for cases sim card / phone number was lost].
