Why are all the ASIC vendors so shady? They're building BTC mining devices not thermonuclear warheads. Stop with the secrecy, excuses, and bs and tell people what is going on already.

This.

In part, I partially understand some secrecy...they're building devices for a niche market, and would preferably like to create a monopoly. If, for example, BFL went about parading their chip specs, processes, and every other little detail, companies like Avalon could come along, scoop up that info, piece it together and create a slightly better product.

I'm not saying I agree with all the secrecy behind this project, but I am saying that I can understand some of it.

Hmm ... one little question ...

Has YiFu been in the USA this whole time or has he flown to China some time in the last few months and been there up to now?

P.S. DISCLAIMER: I don't know anything more than you guys do, on this thread, with regards to shipping, customs and arrival.  All of this is speculation, even if it is a bit more informed speculation than most in this thread Smiley

Thank you for the update. I thought that you were already aware of the tracking number but were asked to tell nothing about it. Seems we'll have to wait blindly…

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending

^That's a translation of what jl2012 said.

That's good to know. For a second, I thought I had to wake up one of Jody's chickens to translate.

Six days, and fifteen pages ago, BitSyncom's last post was...

Don't know if you are sure about/willing to tell about this, but here goes:

When do you think the second batch will open for preorders? Any day now or much closer to March? And you will not be accepting credit cards, right? I'm a little nervous about store large amount of bitcoins for so long with the price fluctuations nowadays.

We plan to start accepting orders soon as third-part reviews come out. Honestly this is us being nice, to give those who are current in doubt some time to see the truth. I strictly believe that there isn't a "company" and "customer" relationship but rather a buyer and a seller, which is a person to person situation. Avalon can only provide information as it is, ultimately it is up to the buyer to make judgment about their potential investment as with all things Bitcoin.

We don't have time nor wish to "convince" the unbelievers regarding the Avalon Project.

It'll be anyday now, I expect third-party review to come latest by next week.

We underestimated the shipping cost by like $80 per unit

I would suggest that for the second batch and beyond, for all US orders, that Avalon make one big shipment (or a series of medium-sized shipments) to Yifu in New York, who can then ship them himself (or with an assistant) to individual US customers by UPS or similar.

This has been/is being considered as well, trust me when I said when are looking into other routes.

That raises the question: How far down the waiting list is the first Chinese customer?

qqagent: Yifu said they have shipped 40 units, and said around 12 units per day. We will know whether it is true or not very soon.

hpmany: It is probably true if these 40 units are shipped overseas. We could only verify one week later (20 Jan - 1 Feb). However, NGZ said he would first ship 2 or 3 units to media: Jeff for overseas, Shenyu for China. What Yifu said is contradicting to NGZ. Anyway, I wish Avalon successful.

Shenyu should be a prestigious Chinese bitcoiner.

At this moment, however, there's still no end-user report from China.

Thanks for your correction. Would you please to confirm whether anyone told you they are sending one of the first units to you? Have you got any information, such as a tracking number?

FTFY

感謝您的指正。請您確認是否有人告訴你,他們的第一個單元發送一個給你嗎?你有任何的信息,如一個跟踪號碼嗎?

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending

Keep in mind, in China Saturday and Sunday are weekend days just like in many countries in the "West". If you want more action on Sundays, manufacture in Israel or Arab countries.  Grin

There are no weekends when it comes to small companies. Remember, they shipped on a Sunday, even posting on said day of them doing such. I'm not sure, but Josh posts on Saturdays and Sundays, and he represents a much larger enterprise.

Today, Sunday, I was out in an ice storm moving lumber. Shit has to get done no matter what day of the week it is for us small outfits. FYI, as it pertains to ASICs, I think I gross more than Avalon, and deal with just as large a supply chain with a myriad of customers each seeking unique material for their projects, albeit not technical related, but a slew of technology is used, one of which is email.

This saga of ASICs is really troubling from an outsider perspective. I have no orders with anyone, waiting for them to start reaching miners before I decide if I want to start a mining farm.

There is Avalon who claims to have shipped yet has no tracking numbers. How is that even possible these days? All the carriers I use give you tracking info if you ask for it or not. Two weeks is also a bit too long for stuff to get out of China unless customs is holding it for an extra long time. Feels like they haven't actually shipped more than a couple units and are stalling for time, if they show no one any tracking info then they can use that as an excuse.

Then there is BFL who keeps pushing their dates back further and further with odd or cryptic issues. Some of their excuses don't make a lot of sense when you look at the other stuff they say which makes it seem like they are further behind than they are letting on.

And then there are the rest which seem to have all folded up.

It's very disconcerting but in the end I am so glad I waited to see how things turn out.

Was the "moped" part just a putdown or did ngzhang really had to pawn his car to keep the business afloat?

I used that as a figure of speech to further describe the DIY/small scale nature of the Icarus/Lancelot business. Didn't mean it as a putdown, I actually respect Zhang's work, I bought boards from him and I have an Icarus cluster hashing right now.

The packages were taken to the Post Office with a moped, they were small and didn't have that much of a dollar value attached, at least not the value Avalons carry.
Where is that "moped" part coming from? ngzhang has posted that he drives CIVIC (I presume Honda) and posted the over-the-dashboard shots of the traffic jam in Beijing.

The moped part is clear to anyone living in a big city like Beijing, let me guess you are from Idaho and drive F150?

I mean bubble in your mind. Price effect is secondary.
I still don't understand what you're saying.
A bubble in what? The term bubble is used to express an overvaluation. If there are no ASICs there will be no overvaluation of anything. If they are produced and everyone rushes to place orders, then they will definitely be making a gamble with respect to other people's behavior, since mining is a 0-sum game, and you could make some argument about hardware price vs. expected return. But that doesn't seem to be what you're saying either.
