Does it matter what set of 2 you plug the PCE-I connections into? If 1 side is damaged, but the other side good, perhaps that is why some people report better luck with 2, than 4? I been using the side closest to ethernet for all my machines so far, would switching the connections to the other side improve any sort of issues people may be having? If so which ones?

How long does it take BITMAIN to reply to an order???

It has been 5 days since I send them the remittance statement for an order of some S3s.I still havent recieve any feedback from them, not a word.I sent copy of the message, that I got from my bank with my shipping adress. Is this normal?

Bank? What website did u order from?

I was in contact with them and I wanted to buy in dollars, so they sent me a bank account number.

What was the website? You got scammed dude.

Well,is this the site of BITMAIN

https://bitmaintech.com/product.htm

if thi s is it,I got the e-mail adress from the contact info.: Business plans/proposals, custom service and RMA request: [email protected]

It was bitmaintech.com.

This was the e-mail:

Hi,
1. besides bitcoins, we also accept USD wires.please feedback to us for remittance info when you decide to place order.
2. ATX PSU is OK, there are 4 PCI-e connectors for +12V DC input, but it only needs to connect two of them(total 30.5A) if without overclocking. FYI http://www.enermaxusa.com/psu_revolution87+.php
3. Have you ever bought S3 from us before? do you have any coupon?
4. how many S3 do you plan to buy? we may request some discount if quantity is large.

Best Regards

BITMAIN

Is there a reason why everyone is changing the thermal compound on the heatsinks?

because they want to do...something
as most people experience shows, changing thermal paste in most cases results in NO effect whatsoever, but don't tell this to a couple of guys here.

Has anyone tried to use avahi (bonjour or Zeroconf) on either the S1 or the S3 miners? This would be very convenient as it would allow using dhcp and never have to worry about the ip address. You could just address the miner by .local . Since this is basically OpenWRT, there is an avahi-daemon package available. I installed it on an S3 and it worked for a couple of minutes but then it stops resolving the .local name. I saw nothing in the logs to indicate a failure. When I restart the avahi-daemon service it's all good again for several minutes. Played with config files, nothing worked. Ideas?

BTW, this has zero effect on the hashing.

Not to sure, I only speculate. a few weeks ago I read a article that bitfury was opening a large datacenter. It would make sense that they where testing small scales before a full deployment. These datacenters will effect the hashrate less and less, Bitfury is like 40% of all ASIC chips, only natural they join the other companies offering cloud hashing.

I hate to say it but you probably got scammed.  I could be wrong.  AFAIK, Bitmain only takes BTC.

I have several s3's that have "x" error in the chain from any stress. I think that it is going to be nessisary, and trust me its the last thing I want to do! This is all over my head, but don't really want to sit around and do nothing either.

You think thermal paste is a good place to start?

Which is your power supply and how many devices you connected to the PSU.

I have 11 s3's, most are at 237-250 freq. Started out with 7, but a friend couldn't take care of his and I ended up with 4 more I didn't really expect. A few of my units are giving x errors in the chain when pushed at various levels. 2 of them cannot go above stock, 1 actually is better off underclocked, and the other 2 handle 225 freq well, and as soon as it his 237 an x error occurs in the string. 6/7 of mine work fine and 1/4 of his works fine. At his place we had to switch the network to 192.168.0.99 to get it to recognize his network. I changed it back to a 1 at his place before I brought it home and have not made any changes since, just plugged in and went, could this be any sort of issue?

I have 4 miners on 2 power supplies, the rest are 1:1, I have 8 850w evga supernova, and 1 1200 watt.

I have 2 of my oc'd running on the 1200 watt, and I moved the ones that couldn't handle OC to the 1 850, All have been tested on a single power source before doubling down to increase efficiency.

I been looking for days but something always comes up. Finally get enough of the issues and tweaking done to sit down and figure out these problem machines. I appreciate all the advice and help. Thanks in advance.

I also got a machine that gets high HW errors out of nowhere, and another that randomly drops out in hash. A reboot seems to work with that one most of the time.

You power supply and its distribution is ok for the S3.
If you really want to OC and if the x are there replace the thermal paste.
Better select one having conductivity coefficient well above 3.
If its included with silver or ceramic it will be more good.
Its not a sure shot method if you are lucky you will get the without x else consider it as an under spec device and live with it.
If thermal paste was the only issue bitmain would have done it.

I have seen others push through the x error and get good rates. Is this advisable? Or would it degrade, and possibly break the machine at a much faster rate?

I would like to try, I got lots of time and certainly would like this investment to be better than the poorly timed scrypt mining I tried out earlier this year!

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Will consider what you said a bit more before breaking open the machines. I am interested to see if I can get them running faster, or if it is just a lemon as you suggested, 2 of the packages came totally smashed up by time we took delivery. This may be a issue with them as well. So many possibilities and so many issues to take care of, where to start can be overwhelming..

Would a factory reset take care of any potential issues that could be arising? I don't mind resetting the network if needed.

Recently I started adding the 3+4 pcie cable and I notice with some over the short test duration run with a few less HW errors on the same freq. Could some HW errors be related to power draw?

FWIW, I have an S1 with all 64 chips turn "x" on me and yet, it doesn't affect my hash rate on both sides (interface and pool).  One of my S3s would sneak in an "x" after running for a bit at 250M and again, no discernable reduction in hash rate.

Did you even try to first re-torque the heat sink screws upon receiving your units to make sure they're snug?  That's pretty much S.O.P.

I haven't tried to do that. I am not really well educated when it comes to PC maintenance.

To do that I open the casing and am going to look for the heat sink that I believe I have seen pictured by others before. Will I need any tools or can this all be done by hand? I will be heading to bestbuy to get a tube of thermal paste and pick the worst machine and start to diagnose the issues that can be treated with the least risk first.

Tighten it until its snug, any hints or tips before I get started for someone trying this for a first time?

Anything else I should grab while I am out at the store to help diagnose / fix these issues?

THIS WAS NOT FROM OCing
THIS WAS NOT FROM OCing
THIS WAS NOT FROM OCing
THIS WAS NOT FROM OCing, THE MINER CAME THIS WAY

Holy crapt people, I am really sorry I didn't see this sooner, one person suggests a cause for this, and everyone jumps on the band wagon lol.

I open up all new computers before I turn them on in my house as a matter of principal. I opened this miner, and saw this. Naturally after seeing this, I did not plug it in. No idea what will happen.

Seems like you overclocked the miner. right? or you applied a non standard DC input?
A change of that capacitor will fix your issue. Those resistors are damaged of not?
If overclocking did that, I'm not sure I want to try and OC mine now. I am one of a lucky few that got four miners that work stable at 440Gh/s on sock freq 218.75.

With this hardware, overclocking id risky.
But the question at hand is did you OC and get that damage from it and if so, what freq was it on and what did you jump to from it ?

There's been plenty of people OC here and none I have seen reported these kinds of issues.

To booradlly
No I didn't do an overclock. But your symptoms as per the images force me to think like that.
I used to overclock my gpus long back and got into this kind of isues.
I usually get this kind of a thing when voltage of the chip(s) increased.
Looks a lot like a capacitor blew after a power surge from something like nearby lightning, its almost identical to what the PCB on my LG monitor looked like after lightning struck the parking lot across the highway from my office.

Are you guys using high joules surge protectors for your miners?
If not, you are risking the same as shown (boards blown). There are plenty of thunderstorms in the summer in my area, so I stocked up at the Microcenter on a few of surge protectors.
