I fixed the x on the asic in the gui by removing the heatsink and reapplying thermal paste.  However I had the opposite issue others have reported.  There was not enough paste.  Looks like someone got a talking to about using too much and is now being too conservative.  There were large areas of pretty much every chip that had clearly not had any paste on them at all.  I applied paste with an exacto blade to all the chips on both blades and put it back together and now the x is gone.  I'm not sure the hashrate is any better though, still only doing about 430 but its only been a few minutes.

On the bright side it saved you the time of cleaning them up. That took a bit of time for me the other day. Hopefully they will get to 441 for you.

Wow it really looks like Bitmain dropped the ball on these.
ALL the S1's were rock solid and everybody got the same hash rate. Plus everyone could overclock if you so desired.

These S3's have hash rates all over the board.  Some work right some dont.

My units are running at 440 GH right out of the box with stock clock.
Guess I was lucky, but luck shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Wonder if they will fix these problems or just keep pumping out defective units ?

Bob

No - S1's hashrate varied as all miners do.

I have 10 S1's and the variance is less than 3 %  these S3's owners are reporting 10-15 % right out of the box ..
My S3's happen to be "good" ones, lucky I guess

Mine at Jonny's Pool
One of the temps on my s3 is showing 248 which is keeping the fans at full speed. Otherwise it seems to be working. Anyone else have this problem?
248???  You might want to shut that unit down ASAP.  That is completely unsafe.  Your units should never be reporting anywhere near that high.

I'm sure its a faulty temp sensor....

Carefully touch the case, if its not hot enough to broil a chicken then its not 248C.
That's very likely, but if I saw a temp reporting 248, I'd be sure to shut down that unit, pull it apart and look for any obvious signs of a problem.  Obviously something's amiss, since the unit should have shutdown by itself at 80C, unless it was changed in the configuration.  Better safe than burnt to a crisp.

If it is could you send us some pics of you broiling a chicken on it? That'd be classic.

So when you guys are removing the heatsink to clean it up, are you taking the blades out of the chasis first and and going after the inner heatsink?  I got two underperformers and one has a perpetual x on one of the chips in the gui so before I contact bitmain about these POS's I want to give that a shot.

Did you ever set it at freq 212.5 to see what you get?

What are you baking in there? It should shut off at 80C. Both of mine are no higher than 41C. Either the temperature gauge is way off or you've got thermal paste spread all over it like peanut butter.

Anyone using their S3 on P2Pool? I am mining on GHash right now and it makes me hate myself. If P2Pool worked for you guys, I'll switch them as soon as I get back.

use Eligius man

S3s are working great with P2Pool, here are 4 stock S3s running on a single address:

http://minefast.coincadence.com/miner.php?id=19vXrwKGUhK4cCU8tA4kWZgbChcmh9a6qj

this pool? http://www.p2pool.org/

how much BTC are you earning / day with your miners?

p2pool.org is NOT directly affiliated with p2pool, it is a p2pool node operated by an individual.

http://minefast.coincadence.com is my p2pool node, if you click the link you quoted above you will see exactly what I'm earning.

The official homepage for the p2pool project is:

Huh Has anyone figured out how to fix the seemingly random beep  Huh Everything seems to be functioning properly on my set of S3's, except for the random beep. I've seen breadcrumbs of others experiencing this issue and some novel band-aid repairs, but no serious fix yet.

Symptom:
Unit randomly sounds a single notification beep; similar to p.o.s.t beep when booting a desktop PC with a missing keyboard.

Issue:
Unknown.

Troubleshooting:
Reviewed and verified settings on unit.
Reviewed network settings.
Reviewed unit and network logs.
Flashed firmware.
Used traffic monitor for disconnect notification.

Resolution:
Unknown. A few (novel) band-aids have been offered, but no serious fix to date.

re beeps:
1. did you try to switch it off in web gui?
2. In my case(s) there is a perfect correlation between pool switching difficulty setting and a single "beep"

Excellent! How did you verify the correlation between pool difficulty increase/decrease? I'd like to do the same. I didn't switch off the disco notification setting because I want to know when there is a legitimate connectivity issue.

I was looking at the web gui, saw the diff change and heard the beep a fraction of a second later- and it happened 3 times already.

Got both units today and happily hashing on defaults at 450Gh/s for each unit. No issues at all.

Thank you, Bitmain. I am a very happy customer.

my ups is always coming after 6:30pm here. 2 more units expected today as well.
450 at the pool or in web gui?
It's settled to more like 440 and that is on the webui. Power draw is low, which is good. I got lucky and rushed home and was able to sign for it as soon as I walked in the door. I felt like a kid on Xmas which is a bit silly, but I love this stuff.

I'm going to let them burn in for a bit before I start mucking with frequencies or I may just let them be. They have no hardware errors on either box. Only 1 of my S1s was that lucky.
