Wow, the timing of the S4 release could not have been worse for Bitmain, and it's mainly just bad luck outside of their control. The price of BTC is down to $400, and we're also looking at another 15%+ difficulty increase in 6 days.

I expect the price of a S4 to be between 2.5 and 3 BTC ($1000 - $1200), which will make ROI in BTC very difficult...

Which might mean that the next time the difficulty might stall or maybe even *shivers* drops!

Mostly 3 phase 60 Amp and 20 amp breakers. All in refrigerated server room.

That's what I've been thinking about. In addition to 240V/50Hz single phase we have 400V/50Hz three phase (= 3 x 240V) here in Europe.

How did you use three phase current to cable up mining rigs? PDUs? Or just all three single phases for discrete circuits (which shouldn't be a problem as long as load is equally spread across all three phases)?

Basis Distros which have 3 20 Amp Breakers.  We also have a few UPS systems that accept 3 Phase and output on 15 and 20 amp circuits with UPS.

Our space was custom designed for film and video production, so the power lines were chosen to run the lights... 15kw, 10kw etc.

Bad Bitcoin Day today.

I don't think they will release S4 soon sow, because of btc price dropped so hard Cry
oh well, time to buy BTC now !

yes the timing is really bad for them.
and for us who were initially planning to spend bitcoins on the miners if they not offer lower price for the S4.

Batch 8 was priced with 0,58 BTC were the BTC price was 500. Thats $ 0,64 per GH. If you take that as a starting point for a calculation what could the s4 be priced:

$ 0,64 * 2000 GH = $ 1280,35

$ 1280,35 / $ 397 = 3,2 BTC

There is no galaxy or dimension known were 2 th/s are producing 3,2 BTC after you subtract energy costs.

the only unknown factor is the amount of morons who will buy anyway :-)

When one orders from bitmaintech, is there a choice of shipping options / couriers?
You can choose UPS, DHL or EMS (not sure I have the last one right but it is the chinese mail service like USPS)

Are they all a two day service?

I am in the UK and wondering if the machine was to cost just over BTC3
how much would the custom / duties be per S4?

You will have to pay the VAT, so 20% of whatever the declared* value is. Plus a £10-12 handling fee from the carrier.

So if the S4 is $1500 you will have to pay an extra $311 making your initial outlay $1810 for 2TH.

*Bitmain used to declare the value much lower than the retail price, but they stopped doing that around batch 4 or 5 of the S1

It only makes sense to use all your earnings if your building up a farm, so building up a farm here, and all from my initial investment in 1 antminer S1 - (running 3x S1 + 2x S3 + awaiting arrival of 3x S1 upgrades)

Sorry to tell you, thats not a farm my friend.

How many kilowatts must a farm draw down; before you call it a farm?

I am cooking 25KW/hr and I would call that a nice closet. Farm?? I would think 1MW or larger, 5 S3 == window box!

BUT the spirit is right. I began with some 5830's in a hacked Dell650..  lol doing 50BTC a day..  ah I could afford smokes and a sandwich Wink

These days density is king, come 'on polar vortex!!

Likewise, were pulling about 24kW on ASICs and another 22kW on GPU.

Strato

please notice what i wrote... i wrote building up :-p, and for each step i have doubled my hashing i still have aprox 150kw of usable power until i need to call the electrician..

S4 will ship with Power supply since its a plug and play miner.
Even comparing S4 with S3 is not much appreciable due to the nature their targeted customers.
UPS Shipping for bitmain is below $40 for one S3.

My s2's setup and cooling was using 115 kw a day and made my bill this month $1,125. Now that is cooler I'm down to 45 - 50k a day.

UPS and DHL should be express, so 2 to 3 days but EMS could be a week or longer. The custom duties will depend on country and price of the product. Also, a handling fee may be applied by DHL or UPS.

If I go by my 2x s3+ (1.16 btc) to the netherlands VAT is added (21%) and then the customs duty is applied and then 2.5% handling fee is applied. From what i've read some people had to pay 130 euros (~100 pounds) so maybe you can extrapolate that to the S4 but I don't know how much the duties in the UK are percentagewise. Also, it depends on what price Bitmain has declared on the package and since btc is down it might be less.

In New Zealand we have 240V and houses have a 60A service. That means max power draw for a single house is 240 x 60 = 14.4kW.

IMHO, any mining operation that is too large to fit in a regular house is no longer a home mining operation and therefore a farm. So I'd consider anything over about 9kW in the farm category... remember, we still need to run an entire household, so the remaining 5.4kW needs to be used for that (assuming that is enough!). Let's round it up to an even 10kW then for "farm" status.

1MW or larger, in my mind that's "Datorhall" status... or "Datacentre". You're a hosting provider at that point (even if just for yourself).

Yep I have 120 volt 200 amp here in the usa.  I can change to 240 but I am lazy.

I have pushed 7k and 24gpu's that was work.

My guess is 1.9 to 2.4 for s4

That is good price, I would buy. But seeing BTC drop to $400 level I dont think that would be the case..

LOL so whats your goal? to make some money? Ok i get that. But why mining? oh because its like printing money.... ok i got that too.... But why BTC price drop means you wont make money? .... oh.... i get this, because you never believe in bitcoin and the technology.

If you're speculating on the price, may as well do it right, speculative trading.

Run a Bitcoin node.
I feel sorry for bitcoin community, especially for the miners. They mine and want to support btc so they hold, but they got tricked into an arm race (competing with the miner manufacturers) they must "spend" all their mined coins to "upgrade".
Sometimes I wonder if I'm one of the only (now) smaller miner that actually doesn't spend all of their mined coin on HW.  I have a very nice BTC stash and invest a marginal fraction into new HW.  I also don't buy anything new until I've recouped the initial outlay on my current HW.   It almost reminds me of all the drug dealers I knew in my teenage years.  All of them making so much money, rolling around in expensive cars partying their asses off.  Well, at the end of the day when that gig is up, all of them are broke.  Not a single one saved even a small percentage of the money they "earned".  They could have been set for a long time if they hadn't been so quick to buy new a Mercedes and bottles of Grey Goose at the bar.  How many miners are in this exact same cycle?

Quote
Thus in the end, all the money go into manufacturer's pockets. Meanwhile, these farms are dumping coins and price keeps going down.
Yes, and people here keeping feeding the beast.  There are a few exceptions to the rule, but watching people shoot themselves in the foot to buy 5 10 20 new miners because "OMG NEW!" is both entertaining and saddening.

Quote
The worse part? bitcoiners keep getting into this mining scheme. I hope one day, they will know that the bitcoin economy is leaking and hardware vendors are getting richer (in fiat money). Bitcoin price can drop to single digit, and i'm sure there are still idiots out there buying miners.

+1

It only makes sense to use all your earnings if your building up a farm, thats what i have done, but i have also taken out a few btc for "pleasure" i.e. taking the wife on a vacation which did wonders to the question about electricity use, noise, and heat... but now that its colder outside, she also sees a benefit from the heat :-D

i have a stash, and ive bought everything i have with bitcoins (except my first S1, but those coins i have recouped and taken back into my fiat account).

so building up a farm here, and all from my initial investment in 1 antminer S1
