BITMAIN, it is really good job! String design is the key, dropping efficiency from 0.69 to 0.58 at the same freq, awesome!!!!

For everyone who is crying for the price and older chip design, please keep on mind, that professional miners need easy set-up and easy maintenance design. It is very expensive to deploy huge farm with many small miners with separate PSUs and cables, etc. It is cheaper to buy more expensive miners with less work for set-up. Also maintenance is more expensive for more smaller miners.

Please keep also on mind, that datacenter grade miners are not adjusting frequency or doing any other tuning, it cost also a lot of money and takes another unpredictable results for business projections.

I am home miner with less than 25THash, so I will buy S5.

Yuck, this price-per-performance is hugely disappointing.

So 3 S'5s cost 4.985 BTC including shipping and 1 S4+ costs 4.772 BTC with shipping. I really do not understand Bitmain sometimes... So basically for .213 BTC you can get almost 1 TH/s more hashing for a couple hundred extra watts.

Who doesn't have spare PSU's sitting around after BTC mining? I think I have 5 just doing nothing. Quit including these stupid ass PSU's that just jack up the cost.

If I was going to buy anything from Bitmain, it would be 3 S5's. As it is now, I guess I will continue to wait.

I went for peace and quiet I have a few avalon's 4.1's

 Price
 PSU
 Shipping
 $ Total
 Watts
 Gh/s
S5(2)
  680
  60
     86
   826
  1180
  2310

S4+
  946
   0
   150
  1096
  1500
  2570

There's a compelling table why the S4+ is a no go when the S5 is still available. All values are in USD for shipping to the UK. The PSU prices I've factored in for the S5's are four 550W Server PSU's including the braces (I can get 4 of them for GBP 5 each off ebay).

EDIT: Bear in mind that on top of that, I'll have to pay VAT @ 20% on the CIF price of each, so ~ $220 on the S4+ and  ~$165 on the S5's.

Yawn. Miners this efficient were available over 8 months ago.

I don't understand why Bitmain would waste time and money updating the S4. What a waste.
Exactly.  Why .  Why.  Why!  Because their new stuff won't be available till mid/end summer.  Bitmain milk it for all you can.  The specs just aren't there.  Should have been sold has kit.  Notice I didn't say uprade kit.

Once again we don't need more miners or even better miners.  We need higher btc prices.
That one is far beyond OUR control.

yeah  btc price is not easy and as for what to buy 1071 for this new gear vs 1118 for 3 s-5's

you get 2600gh for the s4+ and a free psu  giving about 1500 watts
you get 3450gh for the s5    and you need   about  2000 watts worth of psu you supply.

prices are close if you do not own a psu. the s4+ could be better for you.

Good point... I forgot to take into account the external PSU costs with the S5. That does slightly even out cost comparison.

Well since these are screamers as are s-5's  you could go server psu and run 2 s-5s for under 120 in psu cost.

so 1071 vs 1238.

  make it 1075 vs 1250

the s4+ is better built case wise.  if they both were exactly   .52 watts a gh

I would call it really tight, but the s4+ is .58 watts. So point goes to the s-5.

Which has always been the case that :

the s-1 = better $ deal then s-2
the s-3 = better $ deal then the s-4

Now:
the s-5 = better $ deal the the s-4+

I could argue that buying a 3 pack from ehash avalon 4.1 is better then buying the  s4+ if you have a psu on hand

S4+
lets see price 1075
hash              2600
psu free
really fucking loud.

Avalon 4.1 3 pack
lets see price 1600
hash             3450
if you have psu free
quiet

^^ Looks good but damn 96 Db haha More targetted for datacenter operations than home miners except the I do not think than an upgrade for most large scale applications is an option at this point due to the price per unit for the S4+.

And a case made for an LCD screen but one does not come with it.

Thank you all for all the input so far.  If you are visiting New York between April 27-29, one of the S4+ will be displayed at the Inside Bitcoin Conference.  Please stop by and say Hi.  (We are also thinking about having a local Bitcoin Tax specialist at our booth to answer questions regarding mining and tax in USA. *)

Here are some preview from the S4+.

Noise wise, this is measured with a smartphone app.  So it could be a few +-% off.  Its not measured in the non-echo room.  Room with Drywall as the wall material.

*Tax Advisor will be a third party advisor and not from Bitmain.

I agree old chips come on get with the new tech chips bitmain. All I have to do is buy another S5  and I will have more speed than the S4+ !!!!!!

and Still running on 120v to !

Is this your Idea of a joke or are you just milking the cow or you trying to get rid of all your old stock.

also I don't have 220v all I have is 120v single phase 50a service so I could not even use the S4+.

Ridiculous come on bitmain new chips please!!!!!

Or could be they don't have the funding to make them they are going to milk the cow and then Disappear never to be heard from again !

I think you smacked the proverbial nail straight on the head there! Though I still question why they went through the design process for the S4+ (they look to have flipped the chips like they did with the S5), I suppose since the S3+ (sold only in China) was already about, they deemed it feasible to milk the last ounce out of their older chip seeing they were rushed to market with the BM1384 (S5) chip.

On the whole, that would be understandable, but then the pricing at that efficiency (compared to an existing and available S5) is mind boggling. I can not think of bitmain caring more about the network (and diff rises et al) more than their bottom line. On the face of it, the dev costs for the S4+ are down the pan as no one in their right mind would buy the S4+ out of China! So that leaves the option that this was built (and is being targeted) for their hosting service! Neat trick there bitmain, but it will only come off if the power costs borne by the user are at or less than 8 US cents.

Saying that, the S2 upgrade kits must be a matter of logistics now .... surely!
