I live in Boynton Beach, FL and I recently assisted RU4ME Pet Rescue, Inc, a 100% volunteer animal rescue organization, with getting set up for a Bitcoin merchant account through Elizabeth Ploshay at Bitpay. This organization runs adoption campaigns out of the Boynton Beach, FL PetSmart each weekend and they have a group of incredible volunteers who house the animals during the week. They are in need of funds to pay back vet bills as vet bills make up the vast majority of their monthly expenses. They are the type of organization that would appreciate even the smallest donation and one of the great features of Bitcoin is that it makes sense for micro payments.
Here are some helpful links. I realize there are many very worthy charities on this forum. If anyone has the ability to donate even a small amount to these guys, I know it would be put to good use.

It would be nice if the community can make a collective list. I know there are people on the forums who have a focus on their own various charities.

I just added one more public charity this morning, after reading a recommendation on this topic thread.

So if I donate 1$ how much of that will go to the animals?
If you donate 1$, animals will get 1$. Neither I nor bitmarket.pl ever took any fees on these donations.

Charities have an efficiency ratio, which measures the percentage of donations that actually go to help the cause they are supporting. There are many charities that have a very low efficiency ratio, sometimes below 33%.
Not all charities work the same pal, especially in different countries. Our charity is getting other donations and support from companies and schools, see the list here
There is also animal pharmacy shop and income from that goes towards bills and running expenses.
For example here you can see official donations statement. (I know it's in polish, but it basically says they spent everything what they collected on food and supplies for animals. No bills or taxes.)
Donate to greenpeace. You know easily that it is legit.
This is one of the most well known ones. And Jason King is a large Bitcoin and Litecoin advocate.
Greenpeace if that's your cup of tea.. 
There is this really amazing organisation called Art in All of Us and I just recently convinced them to start accepting bitcoin. They are my first "big catch" since I started evangelising.
They work with children all over the world but especially in less developed countries. Their programs have reached almost half a million children across the globe. They are a registered organisation both in Belgium and in the US. This is a summary of their activities written by them:

Also, if you have any comments regarding how they implemented the donation buttons etc. please let me know and I will forward the info to them. They just enabled this two days ago, please make them happy and show them that it really made sense to do this!
