I think the best explanation for the smartbridge concept that you can find is the Smith and Crown article.
They took a lot of time to research Ark and asked tons of questions before writing it.

Not necessarily.
Without having read the whitepaper, I think it would work something like this:
In most, if not all blockchains, you can sign transactions. So you can sign a transaction with some kind of identifier, that triggers nodes that are looking for these identifiers. No need to change the blockchains code.
EDIT: ok, having actually read the article (
), it sounds like the other chains would need to implement some features to make smartbridges work the way they are supposed to. A short term solution could be signed transactions as triggers, as mentioned above, though. 
But probably wont need a miracle. Just a Thanksgiving surprise?
