Is there a place where you can get consolidated updates on ASICminer developments?

Time to market is the most critical factor at this point if we run on the assumption everything already stated about Gen3 holds true. Bringing this to fruition is no small feat. We can equally dream about friedcat curing the common cold and how profitable that could be but he appears to be fully engaged in building that ASIC and not sitting here having armchair battles on what could be.

One miracle at a time please.

I bought a gridseed scrypt miner a few weeks ago. These things are selling like hotcakes and I'm sure at hefty profit margins. I wish I could have bought a unit like this from AM.

While SHA256 ASICs should absolutely be the #1 priority, there is no reason why AM should be a 1-trick pony.

If time & budget allows, having a side line of Scrypt ASICs would only strengthen the company.

We just went through nearly months without any product, to me it seemed like a near-death experience for AM. Having 2 product lines could mean more stability when one product line meets the end of the road and the other can pick up some slack.

I would rather be a one trick poney who does an awesome trick and does it consistently well than have 2 ponies who are decent. You have to divide time and resources to your other product which in turn weakens your main product moreso than if you only focused on your main product.

Being a gpu miner myself from early days I am very much against scrypt ASICs myself.. That being said though the market is open for it now and our competitors are making a killing out of them through pre orders, so now that the ship has started sailing, I can't help but to say that if there is a will and a way for asicminer to profit from this demand, then I think it would benefit all of us. So I'm all for it if friedcat thinks its a road we should go down

PLEASE GET OVER YOUR IDEOLOGICAL REASONING AND LOOK AT IT STRICTLY FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

Please turn off your caps-lock, there's no need to shout and scream like that. Let's keep it civil in here.

Would it be lucrative to make Scrypt ASICS? Yes, probably.
Would it be more lucrative than concentrating resources on serving the bitcoin mining market? Probably not.

From a business perspective, it makes more sense to specialize than to diversify: development resources are scarce and the bitcoin mining market is an order of magnitude bigger.

What you do not understand, is that friedcat already looked into Scrypt and decided it was a no go.  Some parts of bitcoin are about making money, and some are ideological, I personally feel that even if we could make money off of scrypt asics, we should not get involved.  Yes, altcoins can be a place for innovation, and then you roll things into bitcoin if they are a good idea.  Litecoin can be looked at as a test to see if a different hashing algo would possibly be better for bitcoin, and that experiment has now failed.  Litecoin has no utility over bitcoin now, and should die.

Not only that, but a vast majority of AM investors have large Bitcoin holdings, furthering the value of bitcoin as a whole is in our best interests.  Branching out into other coins may earn us more direct profit.. but far fewer of us hold LTC.  When we put efforts into bitcoin, not only do we get direct rewards of bitcoin, but we also make the bitcoin we are earning, and have earned previously worth more.

you are talking about his analysis when litecoin was at $2.80? and when all the scrypt coins were worth about $100 million 6 months ago. well, the times are different now. things move fast in the crypto world. there is an ACTUAL demand for this product. and yes, at the time friedcat looked at it it didn't make sense at $2.80 litecoin prices. check the prices now... check the demand... it makes sense.

friedcat CAN take payment in LTC and COVERT to BTC and give out divs, he can also take only BTC. REGARDLESS, you will be getting your divs in BTC and more of them. just because ASIC MINER sits out on scrypt asics for your IDEOLOGICAL reasons doesn't mean that OTHER companies won't make million and millions of dollars from it. sitting out of this scrypt game just cause you hate altcoins is frankly, stupid. he's able to GENERATE more BTC by selling or mining scrypt and converting to btc than he would EVER make JUST by mining BTC or selling ONLY SHA units.

PLEASE GET OVER YOUR IDEOLOGICAL REASONING AND LOOK AT IT STRICTLY FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
if a company like KNC thinks it's worth it i really don't understand why you think it's not worth it for AM

Anyone happen to have a link to it?

Unsurprisingly the forum using half decent software has a much better search utility.

if you're not GPU miners, shut the fuck up about altcoins guys ... really.

I agree. At this time the only significant value in altcoins is that they are gpu/cpu only. Other than that 99% of them are just tweaks.

IMHO the alts reduce the credibility and acceptance of BTC. At present the general public has enough trouble grasping the value of bitcoin. Throw in coins that are supposedly new and improved, designed to overcome someone's perceived problem with BTC and yet virtually useless for trade just confuses the issue and is a setback to crypto currencies general acceptance.

Can you please answer my question: "What is your source for that all of 1st batch has already been sold?"

Sorry, I thought someone answered this question for me so I ignored it.  source is a translation from a roxxie post, he is making boards with AM chips and is one of the "certified" retailers.  His information has been good in the past.  The specific post with the translation is in this thread... somewhere, I tried to run some searches to find it but I had no luck, then I got blocked from searching.  It was posted within the last month.

Anyone happen to have a link to it?

you are making predictions about the future that you cannot know (noone can!). doesnt' matter how things "start" it's how they end up. litecoin is popular and is likely here to stay even with scrypt asics. competing technologies (even with few innovations or differentiation is ok). it really doesn't matter what your personal opinion on scrypt coins are since this isn't an "ideological" undertaking. i keep trying to make you understand that it really doesn't matter your hate relationship with other coins when the market cap for them is much higher than of bitcoins when AM went operational. If friedcat has the will and talent there is nothing WRONG with making extra 50/100 million selling scrypt asics this year regardless of if litecoin will be dead in 10 years (newsflash: bitcoin can die off with almost similar odds).

since friedcat is a smart engineer AND a businessman that decision is solely up to him. if KNC thinks it's worth it i'm pretty sure that it is worth it (they are pulling in 25 million of batch 1)

Fuck you altcoin(s), fuck you litecoin, sorry, i am drunk, but these coins... what the fuck ? ? ? We dont need them ...

Let's not be coinist..

We need altcoins to test out new features.

Let the free market decide.

testing? ? ? OK, but this market caps are joke :

Friedcat already stated high speed memory is a big issue....  The other big issue is that the main stated benefit of scrypt coins is they were asic resistant... what point is there to those coins when they are just like bitcoin after an ASIC is made.  Long term.... Litecoin is dead and gone, not worth the dev time taken away from bitcoin stuff.

http://blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2014/03/19/bitbeat-kncminer-flips-the-scrypt-sells-2-million-of-new-rigs-in-four-hours/

if you guys really think that this is INSIGNIFICANT than you are clueless and don't see the giant elephant in front of you. friedcat needs to keep working his sha chips but really reevalute his position on scrypt chips. his expertise with sha asics can go a long way.

if he can sell $50 million of scrypt asics this year or more then i can't imagine AM shareholders crying about making extra money.

Buzz App - Spin wheel, farm rewards
Altcoins might be fun, and they may be occasionally profitable, and they are certainly laboratories for experimentation. However, their existence does not come without an explicit cost.

That cost is a dilution of the value of bitcoins. If all of the value currently expressed by all altcoins were liquidated and transferred to bitcoins, bitcoins would currently be valued in excess of $5000 each. The question is not whether altcoins should exist. The question is whether their existence is worth having bitcoins valued at $600 instead of $5000. Which of course begs the question of whether we are better off with bitcoins at $600 as opposed to $5000 in the first place.

I am not qualified to answer these questions, but I think I am qualified to ask them. I think if I were Friedcat those particular questions would present unknowns that I would not want to factor into my business plan. Bitcoins are speculative enough as they are without designing dozens of other chips to optimize mining whatever altcoin might be the flavor of the day, regardless of how popular they may be at the moment.

Ya there is something to that, but I don't see that anything can be done.

We are pretty close to a whopping 500 alt coins available for trade on the exchanges. All those potcoins, lottocoins, supercoins, sexcoins, darkcoins, etc etc x 500 have to be taking a decent 'bite' of bitcoin's base value.  But ya, what can anyone do about that, I'm not sure.

I think friedcat will just focus on bitcoin mining. He has enough on his plate with that.
