I fear that these games like Cyptokitties and the trading of meme coins is responsible for the congestion in the ETH network and the high fees. That's a serious problem as it's almost inconceivable that ETH could handle the load coming from gaming. There could be thousands and thousands of games on the ETH network in just a few years.

you are actually wrong about Axie, since they migrate to Layer-2 blockchain, Ronin, which is on top of Ethereum, and does not make a network congestion at all, it is processing transactions on their own, just secure it through Ethereum blockchain

Axie is actually getting really big, I bought some AXS few months ago, and it is rising steady, while waiting for airdrop to happen, snapshot was somewhere in October, and airdrop should happen these days
it is a good game, and there are some people in south-east Asia that live on play-to-earn economy with this game

Ok my fault then and good to know that Axie is going for a solution that doesn't get the ETH blockchain stuck. There are so many meme coins and what not that all run on top of ETH. Useless usage of the tx capacity.

what is congesting the ETH network is high load and trading, mostly, you can check out here:
https://ethgasstation.info/index.php

Uniswap and 1inch are usually among the biggest gas spenders

as some said Axie has fully moved to Ronin, their L2 scaling solution, so its not the main responsible for eth congestion,
anyways we want more people to be able to use ethereum and make it possible to scale for the whole world, right?

I think with the amount of new dapps being tolled out the door every day ronin sidechain should be used much more than what we see now, maybe casinos, decentralized exchanges and coin swap pools should move all of the load over to sidechain to taper off the pressure in Ethereum arteries. Coz if it keeps booming and purling ethereum ecosystem will slip in the shower.

Season 17 of Axie' championship is now online and this time it'll give AXS prizes for the first 300 players on the arena (season 16 gave prizes to 200)

1st place will receive 500 AXS, around 3000 USD at todays price.

It's not easy, probably the people who get in the ranking plays like 5 hours a day or wins almost every play.

There was also a rebalance of many cards, this is the complete sheet:

Should I understand that it more like a competitive game? Can those Axies be equipped with weapons and features such that they can eventually fight each other for ladder ranks? That'd be cool and a compelling reason to invest money into them I suppose. I understand Cryptokitties purely as collectibles deriving value from their optic only.
From my understanding it something like a cards battle game and breeding simulator, so it can be considered a competitive game I guess.

Good news.

Sky Mavis closed a Series A investment round and got 7.5 million USD.

this means we can expect an active expansiong even stronger for Axie Infinity.

More players and a bigger team coming soon.

A lot more information on the article here:

axie has 2 main aspects at this point @brooksby
a competitive one which includes tournaments with prizes, last season had more than 35,000 USD in AXS token as a prize.
And a collector aspect.

it's a huge community (more than 40,000 players now) and getting bigger and stronger each day.

the price of an ok team for playing was around 0.15-0.3 eth last time I checked but soon the team will release "soulbound"axies that aren't exactly NFT, so people will be able to play for free.

Do they work like NFT and can they be traded and auctioned on the respective market places? I haven't followed Crypto Kitties in a while, I just remember when they gobbled up all transaction capacity on the ETH chain.
yap, both Axies and CryptoKitties can be traded outside the game as NFTs:
https://opensea.io/collection/axie
https://opensea.io/assets/cryptokitties

Awesome, it's tempting to get involved even the it is not a thing I am too passionate about, but I remember the insane prices that were paid for Crypto Kitties. Why would you buy an Axie over a Crypto Kitty? Is there a strong argument that I can understand in a couple of sentences?

Both Axies and CryptoKitties could be a store of value and investment. Axie Infinty is more playable as a game and has cooperations with Ubisoft (they are working on a new gameplay/battlemode at the moment), Animoca Brands and Binance and lot's of active users: https://twitter.com/AxieInfinity/status/1387606684969754627 in addition to it's NFT's you can also take a look at it's token AXS: https://coinmarketcap.com/de/currencies/axie-infinity/
