There are many coins that are challenging the ethereum e.g EOS & tron , few projects are using tron blockchain to launch there icos but its not as better as ETH , tron may win over ETH but still have a longer way to go ,same thing goes to other
Though Ethereum is still going to dominate that niche for a long time.
It seems to me that EOS has a chance to become one of the strongest competitors for ETH. A new and actively developing project, with an excellent team of developers and good scalability.
The best competitor could be EOS, NEO or ADA, they three of them look really promising, though they don't look like are worth for short term, but are more for a long term if thats what you prefer.
In fact, we still need to mention such a platform as a stellar, which, despite the poor state of the market, already this year proved to be a promising coin.
The best competetors in ethereum is bitcoin because this two coins are welknown and bitcoin is compete but bitcoin is great coin.

Speaking of the truth the most intense coin right now is XRP that almost overtake the market capitalisation of ETH, people are always talking about XRP because the project itself showing something that most of the people favoured.

currently i would say that NEO is turning to another big contender for both Ethereum and Bitcoin due to the overwhelming support they are getting from the people.
The competition in altcoin is getting tighter and tighter. Each altcoin is getting more aggressive in developing and marketing their products. That makes ethereum must help maintain its position by not being careless in providing the development of its technology. What is a competitor that is dangerous for ethereum at this time, in my opinion, is EOS. Because EOS is very intense and has attracted quite a lot of investors.
I think that Ethereum is NEO and EOS worthy competitors. Because these coins have taken a good and fast course to raise. Adequate competition is always good. This creates stable and strong coins in the market.
I really wish there was a Cardano without the bad leadership. I would rather Ethereum have good competition.

I see Ethereum's best competitor is EOS, the initials of the coin are almost the same, lol... I currently find that many ICO projects use EOS, and this has been discussed in several telegram groups, the price of EOS I feel is very stable and good, and the second competitor is CARDANO, this crypto coin is being widely used by ICO project developers. (I know on top of my head that Cardano and IOTA try to challenge Ethereum,

in my opinion ethereum best competitor is EOS. EOS is now widely used as an ICO platform. besides that EOS has good development and has a good future.
Although not as frequent as Ethereum, EOS did have a huge impact because it's funded through using Ethereum and there's some point of time where the EOS team is trying hard to dump their ETH as much as they can while at the same time pumping their own coin, gratefully Ethereum still hold its position up to today.
When Sharing and Plasma is out there will be maybe only one competitor there in the future --> IOTA
