I'm surprised nobody has mentioned mine yet:

Dumb & Dumber

 Cheesy

Nobody has mentioned it because it was dumb.  Tongue

I'm not against any of those. I love it when stuff is choreographed, and I'm a big fan of cinematography. Everything you like about those films is good. But I was specifically thinking of the cast. Both of your choices star Zhang Ziyi, and Hero also stars Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. A few posts back, I mentioned some great films. Of those, I listed some below. Four of them star Tony Leung. Four of them star Maggie Cheung. And one of them stars Zhang Ziyi. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this are the rave (and I mean rave) reviews Zhang Ziyi received for her performance in 2046. To get an idea, read this: http://www.helloziyi.us/Articles/2046-ziyi-critical-praise.htm

What did you like the most about these?

Beautifully choreographed fight sequences, stunning visual effects, interesting story.

A while back, I would've made lists like those of btceic, PurpleTentacle and hany103, including films such as those listed above. All good films. I have many of those on Blu-ray or DVD.

But then I started watching films which were critically acclaimed for various reasons.

There are two lists below. One is a list of some of my absolutely favorite relatively modern films generally made for American and British markets with some sort of Hollywood influence. It is the second list. The other is a list of some of my all time favorite films which I would take to a desert island with me. They are pretty much all Asian films, but critically acclaimed to very high levels, often occurring in the top 100 greatest films ever made.

The point is, I am not unlike others in this thread. I have watched and enjoyed the same films as all of you. And I would have named them as some of my favorite films. But I must say, after having explored other areas of cinema, I truly understand why critics also name the same kinds of films I have been naming, as in an earlier post here.

Given that I have been on the same path as all of you in watching films, and came to the same conclusions as you with regard to what constitutes a great film (see the quoted sections above), it stands to reason that there must be something wonderful and significant about the films listed below which would appeal to many of you as well.

And thus, I stand behind the following as some of my absolutely favorite films.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Good choice, with caveats. Let's consider your choice.

It came in at #2 on the most recent Sight & Sound directors poll, which polls for the greatest films ever made. It will remain there for at least ten years, because the poll only occurs every ten years. See the poll results here: http://www.bfi.org.uk/news/sight-sound-2012-directors-top-ten . Note that it lost out to a film called Tokyo Story, directed by Yasujiro Ozu. In a prior post in this thread, I mentioned four Ozu films. Ozu is indeed one of my favorite directors, and he is also a favorite among a huge number of avid film watchers.

Now, specifically regarding 2001: A Space Odyssey, we have a film which seems to be unrivaled in addressing man's place in the Universe. No other film comes close. Period.

It's important, however, to watch the film properly. It should be watched in its original aspect ratio (not a cropped fullscreen DVD), and it should preferably be watched either in a theater, in a home theater, or on a decent flat panel, where the source is preferably the recent Blu-ray. Furthermore, by properly watching it, that means no interruptions, the volume boosted, and you giving it your rapt attention.

One caveat though: it is indeed worth watching several times, and revisiting it every now and then, but is it a desert island film? I'm not sure, due to its lack of warmth and emotion.

Additional note: on the Sight & Sound Critics poll, (not the directors poll), it came in at #6. Ozu's Tokyo Story came in at #3. See here: http://explore.bfi.org.uk/sightandsoundpolls/2012/critics/

To expound on the idea of what constitutes a 'favorite' film, I believe it has to be a desert island film. No way around it. You have to be able to watch it over and over again with undiminished pleasure. Just talking about them makes me want to watch them now.

Some clips from true desert island films:
