Regarding power consumption, Radeon 5970 and 5870 both consume more power than our card does, the very reason we took this design approach.

That's odd - my old GPU mining rig had two XFX HD 5870 in it, and I measured that the whole PC was using 450W, so even with a 0W motherboard/memory/HD - each 5870 was only using 225W, while the Monarch is rated at 350W

In all honesty, from their standpoint, it's not a bad way to clear some of the disgruntled backlog and avert the rest of the discontent from delayed products a few months.

I'm curious, and apologies for sounding confrontational, but are you high right now ?

This assumes that the world can trust Butterfly Labs to keep their word that they will ship on their stated schedule.

History has clearly shown, repeatedly, that accurate scheduling is not one of Butterfly Labs' favorable qualities.

Even according to BFL's own website, they "don't recommend it". ROFL

There, fixed that for you Wink

Even their lead engineer thinks that this is possible and talks as if they already had a prototype.... (Tapeout is in August for those who didn't bother to read)

Assuming this is the same engineer that estimated the prior power requirements for their presently shipping product, I'm not sure how anyone can believe anything being reported prior to having a physical working product.

Again, I am using well-documented history as an indicator.

I don't understand how they expect to cool 6 asics in that form factor. Smells like utter bullshit to con more money before the disappearing act.

I do like the direction of putting ASIC into a gpu form factor!  The idea of it is really cool.

Now, now children. It is fun to bash BFL but at the end of the day, they have been delivering ASICs and not just running off with ALL of our money. So they deserve a box of cookies or something at least! Hell, even a JoeyJmr unpaid pizza may suffice. Something to congratulate them on their steadfastness!

Yeah, but what about when the power doubles from your pre-fab estimates, like every other chip you've built?

Due to double node jump, the max power should be 0.77W/GH (3.1W/GH divided by 4). Based on everything we know from any chip industry (FPGA, CPU, GPU, etc), that should be the ceiling in power-consumption.

This is hilarious... I actually have some BFL hardware and even I think this means they are finished..  They are obviously trying to move payments to a medium that cant be refunded (bitcoin or wire xfer).  They are using a design which alot of us *know* cannot dissipate that much heat, and they are moving at a snail's pace with current orders.

Guys... Ive never said this before, but i believe they are on the virge of folding and taking anyone who preorders money with them..

Really, go eff yourself liar. ENJOY THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE WHEN BFL  goes BANKRUPT. How do you expect to cool 6 asic chips with one fan? The 7990 has two chips and requires three fans to keep them at 90c when under full load. STFU you scamming bastard.

Remember when they said this about the Jally while doing simulations and estimating 5 watts only?

Turned out to be closer to 30 watts and the whole thing had to change.

----------------------

Now they are talking about 350 watts on a form factor that large companies like AMD and NVidia have trouble cooling and dissipating 250+watts of TDP.

Is it a step up (in theory) if it actually worked on a PCI-e bus? Yes, but is that realistic....nah.

Right now they are quoting close to the same number they used back when the initial design was 65nm. @0.8~1.2 watt per GH/s

Why do they never learn. Even their lead engineer thinks that this is possible and talks as if they already had a prototype.... (Tapeout is in August for those who didn't bother to read)

My 5870 used to consume about 200 Watt.

It seems you don't know the power consumption of the card you claim you have designed (350 Watt).

Maybe you should take a look at your own web site  Grin

I'll concede you might be able to dissipate the heat.. I shouldnt have used the word 'know'..

However, the credibility is super thin here guy..i wont be ordering.

And I'm still waiting for my single and little single from A FUCKING YEAR AGO.  Just FOAD BFL...  Thank you.

If you are impatient from waiting, I have a...

Public Service Announcement:

If you have ordered from Butterfly Labs (BFL) and have not yet received your product, you are entitled to a refund whenever you request one (per FTC rules).

First ask Butterfly Labs (BFL) for one, they will probably say no but you might get lucky.
If you ordered via PayPal you can file a complaint with them even if you are outside the 45 day window. One customer has already gotten a refund from PayPal that was outside the 45 days.

If you ordered via BTC or Bank wire, you can fill out a complaint with the FTC and they will advocate for you with Butterfly Labs (BFL) to get your refund. You can also contact the office of the Kansas Attorney General and inform them that you have had your money taken with no product delivered for months, just more promises.

There are also several threads on how to get a refund from Butterfly Labs (BFL), here are two:

I guess BFL was told to stop using PayPal to snare new investors!

OR they did't like that PayPal gives refunds...
