Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Ain't it amazing how pursuing a selfless passion, together, can accomplish so much? Bitcoin100 started out as a brainfart, whereupon members here expressed that it was a good/great idea. From there, this started to build, once I took hold of the reins and ran with it, as the cliché goes. To date, only about 5% of the objective has been achieved, while the remaining 95% still squirrelly rest inside my mind. But another day, another post, unearths fodder to nourish this endeavor, with each new post having the potential of revealing a kernel by its author offering up a suggestion--or opinion--and thus, quite possibly, steer Bitcoin100 onto a path I hadn't envisioned. A recent case in point: A vanity BTC address. A neat aspect, one I probably wouldn't have pursued on my own. Thank you again, Rassah.

1BTC through Instawallet's green address sent.

Thank you, Jan and finway, for honoring your pledges. The pledge list in the OP has been updated reflecting your kind donations.

Bear in mind, folks, that one does not need to state that they have honored their pledges, unless one wants to go on record for doing such. Working on the honor system should suffice. As I've mentioned in previous posts, the filling of the pool(s) will take care of itself as long as Bitcoin100 continues to build upon a strong foundation.

The last time I was in London was in 1991 while on my way to India. I toured the whole country, alone, for three weeks. Did you know that the majority of Indians don't eat meat or...wait for it, but you won't like it...use toilet paper? Think about that the next time you visit a 7-11.

I'll be touring it with my husband for two weeks. If I had to tour it alone, I'm sure I'd still have a heck of a lot of fun!
My co-worker's new husband is from India. I actually hooked them up. So, yeah, I was aware of them not eating meat. Beef and pork specifically. Not all of them, though. The guy I know only doesn't eat pork, but is ok with chowing down hamburgers. As for the toilet paper, I actually prefer their method. They use soap and water. I tend to do my business before taking a shower, since toilet paper only does so much, and still leaves me feeling not very fresh  Roll Eyes

What are the thoughts on incorporating the wallet with StongCoin since dogisland was kind enough to not only waive the 1% fee, but donate said amount forward to subsequent charitable organizations?

~Bruno~

I already made an account on Strongcoin and imported the key just to test it on there too. If you check the address on blockexplorer, the 1STRonGxnFTeJiA7pgyneKknR29AwBM77 address in the 4th transaction was Strongcoin taking its 0.01BTC fee while I was testing sending money from there (no need to return it as it wasn't part of charity operations).
Since I have this key in both Strongcoin and my home app (encrypted of course), I can send the money either way. Will probably be simpler and cheaper if I just sent it from the home app for free. Strongcoin is basically just a Bitcoin app that's browser based, so will only be useful if I need to send the money, and I'm away from home (like in London for this New Year's).

I also find that backing up the private key is a heck of a lot more convenient than backing up a wallet.dat, especially since I can import it everywhere, it's only 50-some characters long, and is easy to store.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! This step is out of the way. StongCoin will be used when it comes time to transfer the funds from Bitcoin100 over to the charitable organization's wallet.

Ok, that's weird. My home Bitcoin wallet app says the balance should be 7.0 exactly. What the heck? (reconciling it now)

EDIT: Looks like Blockexplorer is showing 0.505 going to address 15eTvRjxaT7fDHNCwoHR9FX78caKTSTmZg
No idea who that is. It's not on any of my wallets... Huh

EDIT: Found a matching amount in my Android wallet. I think I may have screwed up on the fee amount (typo) when sending the coins. Put the money back so it's back up to 7 now. Just chucking this one up to playing around with it too much while testing it. Sorry  Grin

Whew! For a second there, I thought we may have to shut this whole thing down. I was beginning to have nightmares about a whole series of threads, all discussing the missing $1.50 USD over at Bitcoin100. Now that our first crisis is behind us and, by the way it was handled professional, as well as internally, leaving the media at bay, we can continue to move forward.

Most recently, there was a thread (or two) here on BT addressing Wikipedia accepting Bitcoin as a donation option. It turned out to be futile. Their response was thanks, but no thanks. But it doesn't have to be that way. I believe I may have a solution to get Bitcoin as a donation option on the following list: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give/en

1.  Credit card or Paypal
2.  Via regular mail
3.  Monthly recurring giving
4.  Stock donation
5.  Direct deposit
6.  Combined Federal Campaign
7.  Corporate Matching Gift
8.  Moneybookers
9.  Payroll deductions
10. Bitcoin (coming soon) GOAL: 2012

And, for that matter, any one of the following might include a Bitcoin donate option/button on their respected sites with the right leverage:

Important Edit: The following are provided for example purposes only, generated during the brainstorming process.

10. Phoenix Symphony http://tickets.phoenixsymphony.org/dev/contribute.aspx?don=1&fieldAmt

With literally thousands of organizations seeking funding or have regular fundraising drives, there's no reason for not having several (eventually hundreds) of them incorporating the Bitcoin donation option.

With that, I propose the Bitcoin100. The Bitcoin100 is nothing more than at least 100 members of this forum pledging 1 BTC each time a charitable-like organization embeds a Bitcoin donation button (or equivalent).

Before I briefly outline how it would work, I want to first state that I have no interest in holding the funds. I suggest a Bitcoin address controlled by Gavin, of which I'll state why he'll be the best choice (unless some other is proposed). Gavin is one of the main spokesperson of Bitcoin, and his voice carries a lot of weight.

That said, allow me to outline how I envision Bitcoin100 by providing a hypothetical example.

A major disaster has stricken a Pacific island. The Red Cross sets up a page to collect donations towards the relief efforts. Somebody on this board informs them that they'll love to donate Bitcoin. Their reply is the standard thanks, but no thanks. Enter Gavin. Gavin states to them that if they include a Bitcoin donation option/button, he will guarantee that at least 100 Bitcoiners will donate at least 1 BTC towards the cause. Within minutes, and it will only take minutes (unless Gavin is sleeping), of implementing the option, Gavin will be texted, paged, called, etc., whereupon, once confirmed, he'll make the transfer, from his address to theirs.

At first, no bitcoins are necessarily needed. What is needed is more than 100 individuals stating that they would pledge (not even donate yet) at least 1 BTC to any cause that they're comfortable with. The reason for having over 100 pledgers is to guarantee that there's at least 100 BTC in the pool when Gavin approaches each charitable organization.

So, to get started, simply state that you would like to be part of the Bitcoin100 and your name will be added to the list below. When we approach the 100 mark, we'll collectively vote on which organization we want to target first. Once over the 100 pledged threshold, the requests go out to all those that have pledge to donate at least 1 BTC. Once the 100 BTC goal is reached, Gavin approaches the voted upon charitable organization with Bitcoin in hand. If they decline our gesture of good will, Gavin will approach the next voted upon organization. He does this until one accepts the terms, then receives the donation. After we succeed with the first, the rest will become easier to obtain.

Ideally, it'll be nice that each person who pledges to this cause, does it with the knowledge that they may be donating to at least 100 organizations within the next coming year. But it's not a deal breaker if you only want to do it once or twice. Just get on the pledge list, and the rest will take care of itself.

Gaia willing, if and/or when Bitcoin re-bubbles, we can always adjust the 1 BTC option to reflex a suitable fiat equivalent.

EDIT: I brought the Bitocin100 list that was originally at the bottom of this post to top. All other edits (except spelling and grammar) will also be duly noted when warranted.

Sorry  Grin

All paid signature campaigns should be banned.

But total is not a nice integer amount of BTC...

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
We're still only a bit over half way there, though  Cry

Btw, your 1BTC314 address is ready. Let me know how you want it sent.

Slow growth is better than no growth. You just watch! With my charm, I'll have SA members not only pledging, but honoring their pledges.

As far at that other address is concerned, PM it to me and don't tell anybody it exist. Oops! I guess that won't work now. Post it on this thread, perhaps in a reply to one of my funny post, following an LOL. Once here, I'll soon explain its tentative use.

I've added 3 BTC to the pool, honoring my current commitments. Is there a one click link option available to view what's in the wallet?

The following shows what 3 other pledges I'm honoring to help jump-start this pool:

41. MrGaSp (1 ~ By Proxy via Me, Bruno) Because of https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.629553
42. tetra4c (1) Really 2, for I'm matching his pledge because of comments I've made on this BBS.
69. BitcoinPorn (3 ~ And Matched by Me--Bruno) (2 BTC Yet to Honor)

Thank you again, Rassah, for all your efforts to date. I hope I didn't add any unnecessary burdens in your life. If so, take the stress out utilizing your coffee table.

I knew I should have stated in the OP that no algebra was allowed on this thread. Now I need to address these constants and variables.

Hey, you're the one who brought pi into the discussion Smiley

Hey, your're the one who introduced π into the equation.  Wink

Fixed!

Now, allow me to show off the latest pledge list. Take the time to review it, making sure your pledge amount is correct and worded properly. For those not yet on the list, perhaps you'll reconsider your position, now that we have a vanity address kindly hashed by Rassah. No need to donate at this time, but by simply stating your desire to be on the list will go a long way towards reaching our goal.

As each member states on this thread that they want to be part of the Bitcoin100, I will add their name below.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
I'm fine with any charity that doesn't have religion as one of their main 'selling points'. But I guess that goes for most charities. I'm not familiar with most of the posted charities though. Can someone confirm this?

Noted, in re., the religious aspect. As far as the charities mention in the OP, they were penned in for example purposes only. In fact, NPR is a bad example because each city/regional NPR station conducts their own drive, thus making it impractical for us to approach them. Again, the list in the OP was generated during the brainstorming process of Bitcoin100. That is all.

Why are you capping it at such a low dollar amount? To me 1 bitcoin means 1 bitcoin, not 1 bitcoin worth of usd as of such and such a date as shown on X exchange during the time frame y-z.

Imagine if the exchange rate goes up to where it was a couple months ago, about 10 $/btc, you could go to the charity and say "if you start accepting bitcoins for donations, we have lined up at least $1000 worth of donations right away." 1000 sounds alot better than 314.15

I knew I should have stated in the OP that no algebra was allowed on this thread. Now I need to address these constants and variables.

First off, Peter, I've expressed that the total will not be least than $314.15 USD. Just consider it as an arbitrary figure. Sure, we would love to offer more, which is not outside the realm of possibilities but, at the onset of this endeavor, I've opt to pull that recognizable figure out of my butt to use as a discussion reference, opposed to having that figured written in stone. The bottom line is this: I needed a place to start, and having members comfortably pledging, then donating, to the cause(s). Once that happens, I'll be in position to 'con' more Bitcoin value from this family as time passes.

I hope that this addresses your questions and concerns. Feel free to drop me another post, for I'm sure I'll be able to conjure up an answer to your liking. One more thing. Make sure you don't mention my plan to the other members on this BBS. Also, I'm not that versed with modular curves.

We'll use 1BTC1oo1J3MEt5SFj74ZBcF2Mk97Aah4ac

I have sent the key to MemoryDealers, and have imported it into both the wallet software running on my PC and into Strongcoin. Works on both. If you look at the address in Blockexplorer, you'll see some money moving in and out. Just me testing to make sure private keys were imported correctly. The current 3BTC sitting there is my initial pledge (My other 2 or the 5 BTC are in my savings which I can get later.)

Can we send something to this address?
It would be useful to see how serious we all are - I'm happy to send my first btc to this address - let us know.

Now that Rassah has taken valuable time to hash Bitcoin100 a vanity address, and Roger Ver is second in command, so to speak, of said address, I guess it's time to start funding it by honoring your pledges, although my initial hope was to have at least 100 pledgers before doing such, but I see that dancupid is getting his panties wet, dying to donate Bitcoin. That said, have at it, dancupid.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING!

Unlike future slush pool wallets, of which we'll have a more general idea as to which charitable organizations those wallets will be funded for by the honoring of pledges, this wallet address currently does not enjoy such luxury. Let me repeat that: If you opt to honor a pledge by contributing to this particular wallet, you do so with the understanding that there's no charitable organization currently allocated to it. You will only do so with the full knowledge that what ever charitable organization this particular funded pool eventually goes towards, will be one that's held in high regards and, hopefully, not one that doesn't favor your belief system. In brief, only honor your pledge if or when you're comfortable, whether it be with this first wallet or others down the road.

With that, I'm honoring my pledge by adding 1 BTC to the wallet via this address: 1BTC1oo1J3MEt5SFj74ZBcF2Mk97Aah4ac

Remember! Only 1 BTC max ($3.14[159265] USD max, when the exchange rate passes this up for the final time--not looking back) is all you need to donate into any given pool, with the exception of your generosity or you're honoring a pre-stated pledge.

Bruno

EDIT: After posting this post, then adding to the wallet, I took a gander at the current exchange rate. It amazed me to see that since the creation of Bitcoin100, the price has started to climb, all due to the excitement centered around this endeavor. And some say that the butterfly effect is not real.

Seriously, this will afford us the leverage needed, for once a representative of a charitable organization realizes that no less than $314.16 is about to be donated to their just cause, and all they have to do is add Bitcoin as a donation option on their website, it becomes somewhat harder for them to refuse, albeit that is always clearly their prerogative.

I have the private key from Rassah.

I will let Rassah take care of everything, but will step in if needed.

I'm glad to be part of this great idea!

This is great! Thank you, Roger, for being part of all this, thereby adding credence to Bitcoin100.
