Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Hi. If you would like us to hold and manage your pledge, and limit it to some specific amount in USD per specific charity, I can do that, but I can't hold it in anything other than BTC. I can just hold it in a separate bitcoin address to make it easier to track. You are free to ask for your money, or any portion of it, back at any time, if, for example, your $5k donation ends up being worth way more than combined $30k. The money I hold on behalf of Bitcoin100 are pledges in my care, not donations we claim ownership to as soon as they hit our address.
I'm fine if you prefer holding the donation in BTCs so long as you distribute it equally among the next 50 Bitcoin-100 donations.
For example, if I send you for instance 6.05 BTCs (current exchange rate at Bitstamp is ~826 USD/BTC), each of the next 50 charities should receive 0.121 BTC from this fund regardless of the going rate at the moment. Of course, if 0.121 BTC ends up being worth more than the 1000 USD target at some point, you can report the fund in excess of 1000 USD toward subsequence donations.

Can you please confirm the address where I should send the funds?

Understand fully, freequant. I'll PM Rassah this post so that he will be made aware of your request, thus giving you an address to submit your generous donation.

Got this in PM

I have an organization in mind for Bitcoin 100.  It provides food, clothing and help with medical bills to needy members of of the Northwest Baltimore community.  Although the money is not used for any religious purposes, the organization is run by rabbis and most of the recipients are Jewish since that is the makeup of our neighborhood and community. I read that the recipient organization must be "secular" so I'm not sure if this organization would qualify under your rules.  Please take a look at its website (http://ahavasyisrael.org/) and let me know either way.  Thanks!

These guys are within driving distance of my house apparently. If they end up qualifying, I may end up just driving and meeting them in person.

We're going to have to set up some way to track this, or something. Or I guess I can just keep bugging Edd to post updated on the website regarding which charities are being considered, denied, accepted, and paid. Then if I accidentally pay someone twice, or forget a charity, we can all blame it on Edd.

I might tackle it if I have time tomorrow evening in some hotel room on my way to sunny Florida for Thanksgiving. It is sunny, right?

A friend just asked me if "Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco" qualifies.  He insisted it is not religious.
www.jewishfed.org/

Also, a reminder that My Refuge House is located in the Philippines, and they are doing whatever they can to help out over there.  They have accepted bitcoin donations for close to a year now.  Check out their blog to see what is happening.

Let's see what their site has:

Donor choice

For the first time in Federation history, donors will have the opportunity to designate their giving by selecting one or more of four funds for a portion of their gift. How it Works

The four funds are:
Community Core Fund: Ensuring a thriving community by caring for the vulnerable, promoting Jewish culture, and strengthening education and identity.
Israel and Global Fund: Strengthening Israel by advancing social justice and equal opportunity; and providing for Jews in need worldwide.
Bay Area Initiatives Fund: Addressing current community-wide challenges through targeted initiatives.
Innovation Fund: Seed-funding innovative projects in emerging and traditional Jewish organizations.

www.torchacademy.org,

This one's a tad tricky in the sense it's only about two years old, little WBM history, and probably only a little reach. That said, I have no other reservations about them, and truly admire their work, and hope that they're considered for their endowment request. It's quite possible Bitcoin 100 could get more bang for its bucks than what meets the eye with this one. In fact, without going into obvious details, this one could be a poster child, of sorts, of what Bitcoin can do for NPOs.

Over and beyond the latter parts of the above, I like them but, in the spirit of full disclosure, I wanted to state the tad negatives mentioned at the onset.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
I am in for 1BTC per charity.
I pledge an additional 100 BTC to the Red Cross and Unicef whenever they get onboard.
Today is the 2nd anniversary of my initial pledge. To date, neither Red Cross or Unicef have come on board.
In the meantime, Bitcoin has raised 300 folds, making the terms of my initial pledge borderline unsustainable.
On the occasion of this second anniversary, I have decided to review the terms of my pledge to match better my donation target in dollar terms, while keeping the initial spirit of the pledge.

The new terms of my pledge, effective immediately, and valid until 23 Nov. 2015 are now:
1 - 10k USD equivalent in BTC (regardless of the BTC/USD exchange rate) for Red Cross whenever they join.
2 - 10k USD equivalent In BTC (regardless of the BTC/USD exchange rate) for Unicef whenever they join.
3 - 100 USD equivalent In BTC / charity, up to 100 charities (max 10k USD in total).

@Phinnaeus Gage, I don't really have the time to follow carefully this thread, and I don't know most of the charities, so I'd like to ask you if you don't mind to manage pledge (3) on my behalf, and to notify me if you hear about Red Cross or Unicef joining Bitcoin so that I can execute pledge (1) or (2). If you are ok, I'll send you a first installment of 5k USD for pledge (3), please convert it back to USD and use it 100 USD at a time for next 50 charities (please confirm the BTC address) and let me know once it's used up so that I can send you the second installment. Alternately, I can also send directly 5k USD to your Bitstamp account via Ripple (see: Deposit > Ripple > USD).

Hi. If you would like us to hold and manage your pledge, and limit it to some specific amount in USD per specific charity, I can do that, but I can't hold it in anything other than BTC. I believe that the $5K initial donation was meant to be held on the side, pulling only $100 from it at a time to fund, in this case, 10% of each endowment as they become available.

I believe that's what meant when requesting "convert it back to USD". $5K in BTC on account, pulling $100 USD worth at a time when needed.

Dear Devon,

Please meet my friend Dmitry. We met in business school and he now runs a foundation that is looking for worthy nonprofits to donate to. He just donated $1,000 each to Jessie Morey's IBME and my friend Amy's Primate Education Network. I think he will really appreciate the International Lifeline Fund's mission.

Dmitry's foundation is called BitCoin100. They arose out of the generosity of a few early BitCoin adopters to promote the value of the currency for nonprofits: when donors make their donations in BitCoins, the recipient nonprofit keeps 100% (hence the name). None of the funds are lost to credit card or processing fees.

BitCoin100 donates $1,000 to selected nonprofits who agree to accept the currency on their donation page. It doesn't take much work to get it set up, but I know the money could do a lot of good helping with new initiatives at Eureka.

@Dmitry, Devon is a neighbor and great pal of mine, as well as a friend of Jessie Morey. She is a devoted nonprofiteur (is that word? Should be) who spent years working with refugees and now helps bring safe food and water to impoverished communities in Africa and Haiti. A $1,000 donation would be a big help with their projects.

Good luck!

Frankie

Damn, I forgot to thank freequant for reminding me/us that the 22nd was the 2nd anniversary of Bitcoin 100.

It's way over due, but I wish now to thank all those early donors, as well as the ones that came later, for they generosity. Without them, none of what Bitcoin 100 has accomplished would have been possible.

Thank you so kindly, freequant, for your generous pledges. Here's to hoping that Red Cross and Unicef eventually join the ranks of those that accept Bitcoin donations via their respective websites.

As far as for you wanting Bitcoin 100 to have on deposit $5K USD as per your instructions, Rassah will be the person that handles all the financial aspects, thus no need to send it via Ripple via Bitstamp (I, personally, and Bitcoin 100 use BitPay's services). Rassah will probably hash a separate wallet, along with tagging it accordingly for all to see, to pull from as endowments are allocated. If, by chance, you rather not have others know where (read what wallet) your $5K stemmed from, I'm sure Rassah may be able to cloak the transaction somewhat, but I'm not sure on that regard. Just thinking out loud, and wanting you to know that there's always the possibility of something not taken into consideration.

I'll PM Rassah this post, whereupon he'll know what to do and contact you via a PM. Once the funds are settled, the "block chain" tx will be made available for all to see since we try to be 100% transparent.

Since we are no longer endowing 100 BTC due to the exchange rate, opting for an exact $1,000 USD endowment from here on out since approximately the forth payout, Rassah will probably pull $900 USD of the current funds on hand and add a $100 USD from another dedicated wallet bearing your name or some other tag. It may be awhile before we ever have to request from you the other $5K pledge but, then again, stranger things have happened in the realm of Bitcoin, and Bitcoin 100 might be doling out $1K endowments like there's no tomorrow if NPOs start coming outta the woodwork.

Again, thank you again, freequant, for your generosity. I only wish I had more adjectives (or is it adverbs  Roll Eyes) in my vocabulary to express how I really feel.
