Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
And another one!

Hello!

Pathways to Education now accepts Bitcoins! For the past six months, I have been working on this project with the organization and we have finally launched! We are the first national Canadian charity to accept Bitcoin donations and you can see our page here:http://www.pathwaystoeducation.ca/bitcoin/

We would love to have the support of Bitcoin100!

Our charitable registration number is: 86190 8499 RR0001

All the very best!

Seems ok to me. Phinn? Your input is always valued Smiley

LendForAmerica is almost set up as well.

Edd, can you please update the list of charities that have accepted donations on the page? Also, in the contact page, please add my e-mail ([email protected]) as a contact. I have been sending people to bitcoin100.org as a way of looking me up, but there's no easy way to reach me from there. Have it say something like

... contact Dmitry (Rassah) at [email protected] ...

Thanks!

I took care of your latter request, Rassah. Check it out to see if it passes muster: http://bitcoin100.org/contact/

edd could more easily take care of the other request, seeing that the WP editing process is catered to his liking. I could easily get up to speed as to how he has it set up, but opted not to take the time to go through the learning curve.

Checking on the latest NPOs now.

Thank you very much! The people at Esquina Tango are thrilled!

I am now working with the Austin Creative Alliance, an Austin-based "nonprofit 501(c)3 service organization whose members include 160 arts organizations established and emerging".

Hello,

Esquina Tango Cultural Society of Austin now accepts Bitcoin donations. Please visit the website www.EsquinaTangoAustin.com and look at the lower right corner for the "bitcoin accepted here" button. The integration of the Bitcoin donations with Joomla (the CMS used by the non-profit) definitely has room for improvement but maybe that's something that can be done with the Bitcoin100 donation.

Thanks!

Phinn, please verify Smiley

Looks good, Rassah. Maybe they'll tweet about their endowment, since having active Twitter and FB accounts.

Hi Rassah,

Coinbase verified PEN's fiscal sponsor's bank account and we're good to go!  We are now ready to receive bitcoin donations via coinbase.

Please visit our donation page at http://www.primateeducationnetwork.org/donate/ and click on the "Donate Bitcoins" button.

Amy and I sincerely thank you for your patience and consistent support.  This contribution means a lot to us at this time in PEN's growth story.

Please let me know if you face any issues.  Laura and I can coordinate to resolve them.

What exactly is meant when only "secular" charities are considered?

The Salvation Army is clearly a Christian Protestant organization, but obviously, the vast majority of their work would please any secular Humanist. I mean - they don't just go somewhere like Haiti during a disaster, drop off a hundred-thousand Bibles and say "Godspeed!" There is some unfortunate homophobic sentiment within their structure, and other iffy history, but the organization has been affirmed by governments as "secular enough."

Would the Salvation Army be rejected as a charity for BTC100?

To answer your last question, probably not.

The caveat is mainly in place to make sure endowments are not allocated to NPOs that are clearly attached to a particular religious organization. For an example, there may be a Baptist Church in Atlanta that has a separate 501(c)3 set up to garner donations for some cause of which does a phenomenal job with their non-profit. In that case, it would not qualify. Realistically, there are thousands of such caused set up by churches, mostly at the local level, and it's these that we opt to not include for consideration.

I hope I addressed your question/concern to your liking, but if not, please let me know, and thanks for the opportunity to letting us do such, Kluge.

~TMIBTCITW

Basically I guess anybody in this thread/who donated to B100 would have a strong voice (not a veto) if he objected the one or the other cause. Distance to hocus pocus, shadiness and reach of the organisation will be taken into consideration and religions and political parties have an x3 hocus pocus boost.

Hey everyone. Quick question- I told Vanessa to set up a coinbase account for the donation. Did I tell her correctly? Just a suggestion, as some of the orgs tiptoe into the space might be useful if BTC 100 had a small welcome packet the Director could use as a guide.

Couldn't be more thankful for your support of LFA, they do the most amazing work and they really count and stretch every penny.

Cheers!

David

That should be fine. I don't know what Coinbase's policy on fees is. We typically say "BitPay" because they don't charge any fees if you are a non-profit.

Our charity is Lend for America (lendforamerica.org). We offer a platform to help college students practice microfinance in the U.S. Students raise small funds to make microloans to disadvantaged business owners in the community next to their university. We've grown from 3 campus MFIs in 2009 to 24 today and we offer several programs to help students including online toolkits, in-person training during site visits, an annual conference, and a year-long fellowship program. We were founded by and still remain within the legal structure of the Intersect Fund Corporation - tax ID #: 36-4636828. The Intersect Fund was founded by students at Rutgers University in 2008 to serve small business owners throughout New Jersey.

Please let me know what other information you may need.

Hi -

The Intersect Fund was founded by students at Rutgers University back in 2009. Lend for America (LFA) was founded by students who created the Intersect Fund along with students at other universities. They created LFA to have a platform to share resources and engage in peer discussion. At the time it made sense for the Intersect Fund to house all of LFA's backend because it was much easier when LFA was getting started. LFA has a separate budget and bank account but we do not have separate financial statements.

If its easier for you to use the Intersect Fund's donation page, that's fine. Let me know, thanks!

Personally, I'm not sure what the difference would be between putting the donation page on their charity, or their parent entity's page.

If it's proven that they're closely related, either do I. I use the word proven loosely, for it's a forgone conclusion that they are, leaving it to others to offer up proof if that's not the case.

I found an interesting charity thanks to Vivienne Harr who rang the bell: http://www.notforsalecampaign.org/

She's the 9 year old in the middle, next to some dude on her right (your left).

The current charities I am working with are http://www.thehumaneleague.com/ and https://www.againstmalaria.com/ They are both registered charities and and top rated by external charity evaluators. http://www.effectiveanimalactivism.org/ and http://www.givewell.org/

Let me know if you need any more information for the vetting process. I would want to start this process with The Humane League first.

Bitpay is currently reviewing the application I sent in for The Humane League and I can talk to the IT staff soon after that is confirmed.

The Humane League looks like a fine candidate for a $1,000 USD endowment from Bitcoin 100.
