Paypal is payment processor while bitcoin is a currency. They are not mortal enemies. Paypal can choose to accept bitcoin in the future.

Is there a customer protection service for bitcoin merchants ? And if yes what is the premium ?

Since bitcoin is decentralized, there is no chargeback mechanism.
But some highly trusted persons are willing to act as an escrow (ie. middle man). You can find a list of them here. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/escrow-list-108716

Some of them are doing it for free/tips, while some are charging a fixed % of transacted amount.

That's nice. I was expecting something more organised

Paypal is actually better in many respects which is what a lot of people here miss. In general its quite good for buyer protection, whereas Bitcoin has no buyer protection and therefore a greater need of trust in its most intrinsic form of transaction.

Obviously I am a huge supporter of Bitcoin but more transaction tools are needed for its success.

Paypal is fine for buyers because of the buyer protection, but on the other hand, there are lots of limitations for its seller protection. https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/security/seller-protection

For those who buy, can people compare Paypal vs escrowed Bitcoin? That would be a more fair way to compare

Then you should compare the banks with mtgox or coinlenders or inputs.io Wink

Your $ in Paypal is just information stored and guaranteed by Paypal; likewise, your BTC in Bitcoin is just information stored and guaranteed by the Bitcoin protocol.

The big difference here is that Paypal is a centralized company while Bitcoin has a decentralized network consisting of people around the world.

Your funds are not guaranteed by PayPal. They can seize your funds at any time for an arbitrary reason.

Paypal is not available in many countries but bitcoin is available worldwide.

The struggle is real, both have its pro's and con's.
It would be ideal if bitcoin would be hard fixed on a single price, and if it allowed for funds to be secured from theft (some sort of chargeback)
Then it would be a real competition to paypal.

So you want to have a centralized organization to control the price and the flow of bitcoin?
It sounds like the exact opposite of what bitcoin tries to achieve...

I hope this will boost the price of bitcoin, now it's too much undervalued.

May be not so fast I am afraid.

https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/PayPal-Forward/Braintree-Brings-One-Touch-Payments-to-the-People-and-Will-Offer/ba-p/872921
"With Braintree’s new partnership with Coinbase, merchants and developers that have integrated with Braintree’s v.zero SDK will be able to easily begin accepting bitcoin in the coming months, enabling their customers to pay with the alternative currency across their favorite apps."

It seems the function will take a few months to be ready.
