SEC Rejects Multiple Bitcoin ETFs
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has rejected at least eight proposals for Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The decision was made yesterday on 22 August.
Two rejections were from applications filed by ProShares that would have tracked Bitcoin futures contracts — a decision made a day earlier from a 23 August deadline. However, the SEC also rejected six other proposals, decisions for which could have been postponed: one from GraniteShares and five leveraged and inverse ETFs filed by Direxion.

Shorts on Bitfinex Near Record Highs, Could Trigger Short Squeeze
Short sell positions on Bitfinex, the biggest USD to Bitcoin exchange in the world, are nearing record highs. As of 21 August 2018, there were 39,524 shorts on Bitfinex, just below the record of 40,719 shorts on 12 April. This could lead to a short squeeze and a rapid rise in Bitcoin’s price, which is what happened on 12 April when Bitcoin’s price rose USD 1,000.

Nvidia has decided to exit the crypto mining business due to plummeting crypto mining-related sales. Nvidia is one of the top graphics processing unit (GPU) manufacturers in the world. In 2017, it pulled in USD 9.7 billion of revenue, USD 3.2 billion of profits and had USD 11.2 billion of assets.

Cryptocurrency exchanges Gemini, Bittrex, Bitstamp and bitFlyer USA have formed an alliance called the Virtual Commodity Association (VCA) working group. The goal of the VCA working group is to be a self-regulatory organization (SRO) that will work together to regulate their cryptocurrency exchanges with a common set of rules, which will help increase global crypto adoption by increasing security, compliance, accountability, and transparency. The VCA working group will have an independent board of directors and executive director.

Coinbase, the largest Bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in the United States, has seen a steeply declining trading volume during 2018, amid what many consider to be a bear market.
Coinbase’s trading volume has declined 83% during 2018, compared to 73% for Bitstamp, another major USD exchange. However, overseas exchanges like OKEx and Binance that have more relaxed regulations have actually seen steady or rising volume during 2018.

Cryptocurrency mining manufacturer Bitmain has made USD 2.5 billion of profits in the past year, received billions of USD of investment and is about to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) that will bring in USD 18 billion. With this money, Bitmain has been creating mining supersites, mining farms on a scale never seen before. Other major cryptocurrency mining firms, like Coinmint, are also building similar sites. These are expected to make personal mining obsolete in the next year or two.
