One of the boards in my R4 is having some issues.  It needs to be restarted every few hours in order to hash, otherwise my rate falls down to 4TH/s.  One chip temp reading is way higher than the rest, at 97 while the others 3 readings are around 65-75.  I'm guessing this probably has something to do with it.  Any advice on how I should proceed?  Bitmain wants me to send the entire unit back at my cost, which given the expense and time involved, has me thinking that I'd be better off keeping it as a 4TH miner and cutting my losses considering the unit never functioned properly.  Especially since they'd probably deny my claim because the first thing I did was remove the boards to see if there was a loose heatsink.  Any advice?  Should I send the malfunctioning board in for repair?  Should I try buying a new controller to see if that is the issue?

Did you try  asking bitmainwarranty?

Most likely it is best to just mine with 1 board if you have to ship entire unit to China.

I would think it is 200 to ship it.

I just got an idea.  How many people are in your spot.

If  you and a guy just like you put 2 good boards in one machine and 2 dead boards in the other machine.

then send the dead one to china   it would allow for constant hashing with 1 full machine

and only 1 shipment to china.  so shipping to china is ½.

it would actually save bitmain  as they would only need send 1 machine back to the usa.  I think they pay for return shipping.

So I ask bitmain  would you allow this.  It helps everyone involved with the exception of fedex/dhl/ups

If they would allow that, then they'd allow just the boards to be shipped back.  They don't do that because they'd rather play warranty games and screw people like myself that check for loose heatsinks as we've always been asked to do in the past.

Bitmain should just be honest.  There is no warranty.  In the event they ship you a broken unit, you have to pay the costs to get it repaired, you are out uncompensated time for not having the machine, and by the time you receive the repaired unit if it works (so far they're 50% with returning me still broken parts) they're already selling them for less brand new.  Rather than a pretend warranty, they should just ship their miners with an extra board and controller as that would probably be cheaper for those involved than having to ship their units around the world on the customer's dime.

I really hope BitFury comes to the home market in 2017...

I just got 2 customs bills from Fedex
$35.68 for 1 R4 Which was delivered to me on Dec 7
$43.13 for 1 S9 Which was delivered to me on Dec 12
Since each item was well under 2500 in value
I should have paid $0
I contacted fedex
here is their explantion
the r4 is 1,147.49 declared value
the s9 is 1,489.17 declared value
total is  2,636.66   since they arrived within 1 week they are considered 1 shipment.
My translation = Fuck you pay the money bitch.
So I now must add $78.81 to my cost

That's not good but its not too bad. Customs duty here (the UK) would've been minimum $527 plus fees from the postoffice/courier for doing the papaerwork. Id love to live in the US. Electricity is cheaper and import regulations are pretty good (most of the time).

Damn, Phil, that sucks balls...  I got a 2nd R4 coming in this week that'll be swapped with the one in my bedroom, and that one will go to the Great White North and hang with Alan and the gang at Cryptoboreas.  This is crazy, in 1 year I went from a lowly S5, sold it and got an S7, sold it and got an R4, and now a second one to be online in a week or so.  Yeah, I know I'm small potatoes compared to many of you, but a 16x increase in hash in a year, now THAT'S exponential growth!  Don't think I'll be able to keep it up for another year, tho...!

Ive done a similar thing, December last year I started with 2 Antminer U2's, then a gekko stick and three Rbox V2's, sold those for twice what I paid for them, bought 3 S3+, sold those and broke even, bought a sidehack S7LN and two more gekkos, and a couple of weeks ago sold the LN and bought a B10 S9. Only limiting factor is im at home and no where to set up a proper mining farm/rig so everything has to be underclocked and as quiet as possible and also not use too much electricity.

Thanks for the feedback on the side mount.  Speaking of fans has anyone tried to run down replacement fan motors for this fan assembly?  Might not be a bad idea to pickup a spare or two.  I think if the R4 is reliable for me it is going to be a great fit for my particular mining application.

I have also been thinking about small fans for the exhaust side of the miner.  Wondering if 80mm fans would be easy to mount across the exhaust side to pull more air through.  I am still a little worried about the summer temps with this miner.

I was thinking about the exact same when I was contemplating buying one. I though about making a shroud to encompass the whole exit side and on one side of it have a 120x38mm delta qfr1212 fan to suck the exhaust air into a 5inch duct.

Has anyone tried standing these on end?  If so how did you mount/rack them?  Just thinking based on the orientation of the boards that it might be beneficial to mount them standing up on end. Thoughts?

Plus the forces applied to the bearings won't be what they were designed for. So could wear excessively fast. Without a known replacement I wouldn't suggest it personally.

I initially tried them on their side, temps. seemed to go up noticeably, so put it down.

Looks like B3 and B4 are sold out on the web site.  I received an email saying mine has shipped.  Looking forward to testing it out.  I am hoping not to have the issues that I see so many reporting.  If this one works well I will be interested in some future batches.   Grin

my batch 2 is good in an office that is around 68f

Phil, how loud it is in the office? Comparable with some common sounds.

Can anyone who bought the B1 miners tell us how they ran during the summer months?  Were there any issues with cooling or fans?  I see the newer batches people are saying they are auto-tune so I am curious if this is going to work OK in the warmer temps or if I should be thinking about augmenting the cooling with additional fans.

Congrats on catching one at the discount.  I paid the higher price earlier today.  I wonder if there is a way to get them to adjust the price for us early buyers.

Bitcoin is up by over $50 in the last 12 hours since you purchased your miner, its insane. I don't think they will give you any money back sadly. They are prone to ignoring requests. I technically am still owed from my late batch 1 S7. I never got any compensation even though they offered it in their sales page. You can try but I know bitmain tends to ignore requests of the sort. I never even tried myself.

On a good note though they have made the exchange rate dynamic and right now its at $858 and rising. It makes me wonder when they will increase the price or pull the miners because the deal is too good.
