In a few days BTC-e will pop up again, maybe from another location, and will reconfirm its status as most reliable exchange.

Update2: At the moment, work is underway to restore the service. Approximate terms from 5 to 10 days. Thank you for understanding

5 to 10 days to restore the service? I thought It was a regular maintenance, I thought there was nothing to worry!

If you haven't already, now is a good time to watch "Full metal panic" simply PANIC! Grin

You are not right ... think that probably the data center is not a secure place anymore, they'll probably have to move to another location, who knows ...
if I;m only thinking to this specific case, moving to another data center, which usually when it's planned it is done smoothly, preparing the other infrastructure then switching the button...
But probably in their case, they might need to pack everything in hurry then take time to organize on the other side.

Anyway, the update2 seems confident, it seems they know what they have to do and the time it would take... IMHO

Sad thing is that BTC-e managed to hide all their funds from FBI.

Why is that a bad thing? I rather trust BTC-E staff than FBI xD
In this case we know the staff.. Look the picture. He is on the news!
Do you really think this man will pay anyone?

No exchange can hide their funds, anywhere. It's a myth. Only crypto funds can be goxed Wink

The Facts.

Ok guys, if you want to know.

1) Two nights ago, "anomolous activity" led staff to believe that an attack similar to the ETC syphon attack after the ETH fork was being prepared for August 1st
2) To isolate these effects of this activity, the btc-e core trade engine and dependent applications have been quarantined
3) Work around code has been completed and tested in a sandbox environment, however:
4) BTCe should be fully functional *only after* August 1st as a contingency

\Att new update, I think this is very much in line with what you write

"Update2: At the moment, work is underway to restore the service. Approximate terms from 5 to 10 days. Thank you for understanding"

Yes, this announcement is correct.
How do you explain the arrest today ?

Russian Embassy Confirms Detention of Russian on US Wanted List in Greece

The Russian embassy in Greece confirmed to Sputnik that a Russian national who is on the wanted list in the United States over money laundering via bitcoin transactions was detained in the country...

Source:
https://sputniknews.com/politics/201707261055896195-russia-embassy-greece-detention/

They said "The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly accused the US of "hunting" and detaining Russian nationals abroad.". It seems that Russians are "feeling" this arrest when they reacted that way.

It's very possible the Russian government will retaliate in some way if Vinik isn't released soon.

This extended downtime is contingency to allow the August 1 fork threat to be fully ameliorated. All funds are safe and service will be fully restored
Hope that all funds are safe if not we will experience of huge price dump not just simple panic sell expect to see back the price of $1k level..
and hoping that it will not be the next MT.GOX just like what happen to other exchange site every year.. .

This is a trick from them to keep/hold/block and withdraw their coins from customer and to benefit at 1 August (if any) or later if there will be any airdrop at this date or something similar leaving their clients to not control their own money.
Being arrested in Greece, what a smart trick they played.
Let me guess, local police and the US state attorney are also involved in this clever scheme to steal BCC from customers?

Very shady action from them, I don't use btc-e but I know it's a big exchange and 5-10 days maintance is a lot.

MY estimate is only 20-30% recovery if fiat still remains.

I don't know but I tend to believe that ... they will probably recover over the next days

The message seems pretty confident, although covered with the same secrecy we are used to from btc-e

Maybe they really have reasons to keep the low profile ...
