It is not like Ethereum and Bitcoin is having some sort of a "relationship". It has more to do with the dependency which Ethereum has on Bitcoin. In simple words, Ethereum needs Bitcoin to survive and as of now there is no independent existence for that cryptocurrency. On the other hand, Bitcoin is capable of an independent existence. All the other altcoins are like parasites leaching the market cap of BTC.

Even we have seen plenty usage of ethereum especially with other platforms such as DeFi and ICOs it cannot still determine the dominance of it over bitcoin. Bitcoin still the king of cryptos and that is really visible in terms of its marketcap as well as its popularity compared with ethereum.

You are assuming Ethereum to be more "useful" because it can be used for smart contracts. But for the purpose of being used as a medium for online payments and for investment as a speculative investment asset, Ethereum has no additional merits over Bitcoin. And at least for me, smart contracts make no difference. Because I haven't seen it a lot in real life usage.

What is your reason why ethereum is more useful than Bitcoin? I don't see it that way, on the contrary bitcoin is more useful than altcoin (in some aspects), as a pioneer bitcoin has proven that its blockchain network is useful so that it gives ideas for many people to create their own network.

Both are aiming for different purpose in terms of how it is utilized.
